OUR VIEW A weekly guest column provided by Lakeland community ministers.

Oh say, can you see?

By KENNETH GREENWOOD Milford United Methodist Church Has it ever occurred to you why we come to different conclusions about the world? One person sees everything in a negative setting while another person sees the negatives, but takes a positive approach to life and the world. To be sure, our environment enters into the picture, but the Scriptures teach us that much depends on the spirit within a person. The spirit within a person accounts for the way that person interprets what he or she sees outside. If I have not the Spirit of God, I shall never interpret the world outside as God interprets it; 1 shall continually have to shut my eyes and deny certain facts. As Christians, we recognize that we must have the Spirit of God for practical living, but do we realize the need of the Spirit of God for thinking? If we have the Spirit of God within, we shall be able to interpret in the light of God what we see with our eyes and hear with our ears and understand with our minds. To experience Christ and be possessed by the Holy Spirit is not only important for living, but for thinking. If we will bring our thinking into captivity to the Holy Spirit, we form what is termed, “nous.” Nous is a Greek word meaning responsible intelligence. Until the nous is formed in natural life and in spiritual life, we get at things by intuition, by impulse, but there is no responsible intelligence. An individual may have a genuine Christian experience, but if his or her mind is not informed and disciplined, his intelligence becomes a hotbed for heresy. Let me share with you three stages of intelligence. First, there is natural (responsible) intelligence. Some people never come to a responsible intelligence. The impulses, imaginations, fancies never mature. As adults, we are responsible for things we express, statements we make, thoughts we form. Those of us who are

Christians in experience have the responsibility for being Christians in responsible intelligence. Hebrews 11:3 Second, there is another stage of intelligence. There is confused (responsible) intelligence. Confusion takes place at the beginning of the Christian Life. Il Corinthians 11:3; Galatians 3:3 The danger here is becoming a legalist. Taking our religion “smorgasboard style,” pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps. The first law of the new Christian is concentration. Confusion results in the responsible intelligence of the nonChristian pulling against the responsible intelligence of the Holy Spirit. James 1:8 We must make the decision as to whether or not we will be identified with the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 8:6 The second law of the new Christian is consecration. The mind of the nonChristian is wrong in its responsible thinking. It gives verdicts against what Christ says, will

Dinner, program presented to Calvary UM women

The Calvary United Methodist Church’s women’s organization hosted a dinner and program recently with Dr. Wendel Shank, Syracuse optometrist, presenting the program at the close of the meal. Susie Tytler, chairman, introduced Dr. Shank who presented his program of slides with narration on the “Dominican Republic Eye Program.” Dr. Shank is well-known for his travels abroad and his caring and treating of vision problems of the underprivileged in many countries, including supplying glasses to people in these countries without cost to them. At the close of the program, the Ruth Circle held a brief business meeting. Recently elected officers to the executive board serving through 1984 include: President — Susie Tytler

think Christ’s ways are unreasonable, will picture Christ as a dreamer, will come to the conclusion that Christ’s ways won’t work. Third, there is still another stage of intelligence. There is spiritual intelligence. 1 Corinthians 2:16 The beginning Christian has the Spirit of Christ, but not the mind of Christ. The mind of Christ is the responsible understanding of Christ. Galatians 4:19 To form a spiritual responsible intelligence means two things: 1. The Holy Spirit energizes our spirit. 2. We allow the Holy Spirit to work out a responsible intelligence in us. I John 5:20; Hebrews 8:10 A full, mature, understanding intelligence on the part of Christians will keep them from misguided impulse and driven about by every wind of doctrine, and enable them to understand God’s will and do it.
