Warriors open season Friday
By TOM CHARLES Sports Writer It's time for the annual bout with Hoosier Hysteria as the Wawasee Warriors kickoff their prep season with a home hardwood duel against Carroll. Coach John Wysong and his crew are out to repeat last year's opener in which the Warriors sprinted out to an early lead and held on to down the Chargers by the score of 62-41. According to Wysong, Carroll is not a team that can be taken lightly. The Chargers feature a roster with 10 juniors and two seniors; a young and talented group of players. "They were really well-skilled and young last year,’’ noted Wysong. "They shot the ball well from the perimeter” "This year’s team has good size. They have four kids who are over 6-3. They are gonna be ready for us. They’ll come in here soaring pretty high.” The leading offense threat for the Chargers appears to be 6-3 senior Mark Merryman. He led the Carroll squad with 10 points in last season’s clash. He will be complimented by the play of Dumond Lowery, a 6-1 junior who has good quickness. The Warriors’ starting five has not been firmly set at this point in the week. Wysong has a core of seven players likely to see a lot of action, and he has not commited himself as to which of those players will take the floor first. The seven players are 5-8 junior Seth Swihart, 6-1 senior Kyle Swartz, 6-0 junior Brooks Koble, 6-0 senior Kim Zurcher, 6-0 senior Jeff Atwood, 6-3 senior Jon Vitaniemi and 6-2 senior Joel Rhoades. What the Warriors are missing in that list of players is an inside intimidator after the fashion of

Ron Spunar. Consequently, fans can look for a few adaptations in the Warrior attack. “We’ll use some block and roll this year,” noted Wysong. “We tried to cram it inside last year, but this year we will be looking more for the short jumper from 10 to 15 feet. We’ll have to go inside to be able to establish that ‘pygmy jumper,’ but if the opposition begins to respect that then we have something.” “I think we have to run with patience,” he added. “We need to get good shot selection.” Wysong went on to note that the play in practice has been up and down, lacking the consistency of a fine-tuned club. But fine-tuning is an arduous process, not something that is accomplished in a few weeks of practice. “The guard play has been pretty impressive,” said Wysong. “We should be a good ball handling team and not throw it away that often.” Defensively, Wysong has no intention of abandoning his man-to-man, aggressive style of coaching. "We should play good half-court pressure defense. Don’t look for us to be packing the middle.” “We’ve got to hit the boards,” he added. “We have to work at keeping the ball out of the middle. Once it gets in there we will have to defense it well. If we rebound well and play good inside defense we won’t get blown out by anybody.” The absence of Spunar will make things tougher inside on the Warriors’front line. According to Wysong, this year’s forwards will have to "play better to do the job as well as last year.” If they can establish some consistent rebounding and defense, Wysong thinks they will have taken an important step towards being a bunch of steady performers.

For the time being, however, the focus is on Friday night and the Carroll Chargers. Wysong has his own agenda for the lidlifter. “1 expect the players to put forth the effort to execute all the things we’ve worked on in practice, both offensively and defensively,” he said. “I don’t want crying or alibis at the end of the game. I want our players to play with poise — to think about what it is that we want to do.” Fairfield The second contest of the season promises to be a real barn burner. Last year it went down to the wire with the Warriors emerging on top by two points, 65-63. Third-year coach Glenn Swanson has a list of five returning players around which to build his program this fall. He is looking for the 1983-84 edition of the Falcons to be quicker than last year’s 18-7 sectional champions. Headlining the Fairfield roster are 6-2 senior guard Gary Wallace, 6-1 senior guard Jeff Beer and 6-2 senior forward Tad Gross. Gross netted 200 points in his junior season. "Wallace is a smart player and he has improved his shooting,” commented Wysong. “Gross is a rugged rebounder, a real blue collar type of player.” “Fairfield is a tall team overall,"he added. “They are a good, aggressive squad with a good tradition in the sport.” The contest marks Wysong’s return to his old coaching turf, a fact which he gives little significance in the overall game picture. “I stick to the task at hand,” said Wysong. “I don’t take it personally — it doesn’t matter more one way or the other.”

Sports comment — Calling the shots as
AN APOLOGY IS IN ORDER for an omission in last week’s Calling The Shots. I failed to note that Sandy Payne, a junior guard on the Lady Warriors basketball team, was named to Hoosier Basketball’s Honorable Mention Allstate team. She may get her recognition a week late, but she is certainly no less deserving of the honor. Thanks to a dedicated fan for catching my mistake. TELLING THE PLAYERS FROM THE REFEREES isn’t always an easy task considering the number of athletes who take it upon themselves to voice their opinions on close calls. Well, the situation became even more confusing in Fort Wayne last Friday when two linesmen failed to show up for the International Hockey League match between the Fort Wayne Komets and the Toledo Goaldiggers. In order to compensate for the absentee officials, one player from each team was appointed as a linesman. The fill-ins did an adequate job, but proved without a doubt that there is no substitute for the real thing. I have a feeling that if all athletes were forced to officiate from time to time, referees would take less verbal abuse. That would be a welcome change in sports on all levels. TRAVESTY OF THE WEEK? No doubt about it. This week it should be dubbed the Travesty of the Weak award. It goes to the less-than-fierce Detroit Lions, proud owners of a 17-27 loss to the Houston Oilers. THERE’S A NEW MEMBER OF THE M-J CREW this week. Mark Weinstein, a graduate of Grace College and former reporter for the Times-Union, has joined The M-J staff and will be a regular member of our pick ’em panel. Mark is currently the Sports Information Director at his alma mater and will be covering Wawasee sports for the M-J along with myself. In his younger days, Weinstein could be seen parading around the Grace baseball diamond oufitted in a penguin suit. Fortunately, his choice of clothing so far this week has been a little more conventional! LAST WEEK’S RESULTS were: Penn 17, Hobart 0; Dwenger 14, Saint Joseph’s 0; Luers 19, Crawfordsville 7; Churubusco 6, Jim town 0; Penn State 34, Notre Dame 30; Arizona 27, UCLA

Five Wawasee volleyball players were given Northern Lakes Conference honors at a conference meeting last Wednesday night. Juniors Anita Swope and Christy Speicher were named to the AU-NLC First Team, giving Wawasee the distinction of being the only school with more than one player on the six-member squad. Swope was an honorable mention choice last year. Sandy Payne, also a junior, received All-NLC Second Team honors. Senior spikers Dawn Young and Penny Hoover were

24; San Francisco 27, New Orleans 0; Kansas City 20, Cincinnati 15. It’s basketball time for our M-J crew of forecasters and one can only hope that the switch in sports is accompanied by an improvement in predicting prowess. The combined percentage for our four soothsayers last week was a measly .438. A comment on that figure would not be fit to print! This week’s slate: In the high school football playoffs it’s Penn vs Indianapolis Washington, Dwenger vs Roncalli, Luers vs Chatard and Churubusco vs Fountain Central; in boys* high school basketball it’s Carroll at Wawasee, North Wood at Elkhart Central and Goshen at Northridge; in girls’ high school basketball it’s Wawasee at Warsaw; and in the college ranks it’s Goshen at Marian and Bethel vs Grace (women’s). There is no guest picker this week. Charles (.687) — This is a painful week for the ex-Maple Leaf. Despite his intense loyalty to the Goshen basketball team, he has to go with Marian in Saturday’s hardwood clash. His other picks: Penn, Dwenger, Chatard, Busco, Wawasee (boys and girls), North Wood, the Redskins and Grace. Kuhn (.687) — Kuhn is coming off his worst week in a long while. The avid Warrior fan is looking to get back on the winning trail by picking Penn. Dwenger, Luers, 'Busco, Wawasee (girls and boys), Central, the Redskins, Grace and Marian. Rhodes (.458) — What can you say about a 2 for 8 week? Not much. It’s going to be a long, cold winter for the Milford bachelor if he doesn’t soon generate some momentum. His picks for the third week end of November are: Penn, Dwenger, Luers, 'Busco, Wawasee (boys and girls), Elkhart Central, the Redskins, Grace and Marian. Weinstein (.000) — Weinstein didn’t waste any time explaining his predicting philosophy. "I'm not out to please people,” he murmured over this week’s list of games. “I’m out to be correct.” Could this be another Doug Walker in the making? Weinstein’s inaugural picks are Penn, Dwenger, Chatard, 'Busco, Carroll, Elkhart Central, the Redskins, Wawasee (girls), Grace and Marian.
Girls' game no longer part of basketball package
The Wawasee High School athletic office has announced that the November 25 girls' basketball home game with Mishawaka has been rescheduled for Thursday, Dec. 22, at 6:15 p.m. at Wawasee. The scheduling change is due to Mishawaka’s participation in the state volleyball tournament. The Mishawaka spikers captured the state crown with a victory in Indianapolis over the week end. The girls' game was part of a scheduled boys/giris doubleheader on the 25th. As a result of the cancellation, the

The second team consisted of Michelle Sand of Warsaw, Ronda Klotz of North Wood, Lana Powell of Plymouth, Kim Macy of Plymouth and Concord's Leigh Shomber in addition to Payne. The Warriors ended their season with a loss to Goshen in the sectional championship.

Lady Warriors open season tomorrow
By TOM CHARLES Sports Writer The Lady Warriors are going to field a short lineup when they take to the floor in tomorrow (Thursday) night’s opening contest at West Noble. Coach Dale Brannock is fielding a three-guard attack for the lid-lifter. It is an indication of things to come for the Lady Warriors who are planning for greater offensive mobility this year. “We are going to move more people on offense," said Brannock. “As a result, we should be able to free more people to get their shots. We are going to be outsized in nearly all our games and we’ll have to compensate for that.” The Lady Warriors will go up against some good size tomorrow night in the person of Deb Koher. The 6-4 junior center is one West Noble's leading players, according to Brannock. Koher, along with junior Jill Beers and senior Starr Caskey, will be three of the host’s top performers. Beers was hurt last season and did not play in the 59-35 Wawasee win. Brannock and his players do not get much time to rest up before the second contest. On Saturday night they host the Fairfield Falcons who are under the guidance of first-year coach Toby Kidder. The quick turnaround is not one of Brannock's major worries.

“We know what we are going to do regardless of them,” he said. “I would rather play than practice.” Monday night the Lady Warriors pack their bags and head south to Warsaw for the first NLC game of the year. The Tigers, looking to avenge an 11-point loss in the sectional, are loaded with letterwinners and Brannock anticipates a tough contest. “They will be fired up for us." he noted. “It is a good rivalry. They are big. Three players are 5-11 or better. But we have one advantage in that this will be our third game and their first.” Brannock is anxious for the season to get underway so that he has a chance to evaluate some of the changes he is implementing. “We are trying a lot of new things and at this point I have no idea how they will work out," he commented. The team was in action briefly during on open house scrimmage at the high school on Monday night. Brannock was pleased with what he saw there. “I felt good about our lack of turnovers,” said Brannock in reference to the intra-squad scrimmage. “We will have a balanced attack this year. On a given night there could be as many as seven players in double figures.” “We’ll be competitive,” he concluded. “The only things that will hold this team back are the limitations the players impose on themselves."
