(Continued from page 4) sense, but with a few twists," Wysong explained. "We ll have some plays that we ll run more on offense. We are going to have to get good shots." The thing that has impressed Wysong thus far about his guardladen team is the overall skill of his players. “We are a pretty skilled team,” he noted. “We pass the ball better than last year.” When it comes to defense, the Warriors will not depart from their aggressive style of man-to-man play. The half-court man-to-man is a very flexible and Wysong will use that as his basic defensive weapon. "Zones appeal to everybody, but they don’t accomplish our defensive goals,” said Wysong. “If we were big and slow we would probably zone.” Wysong’s main defensive objective is to put a lot of pressure on the ball. In so doing, the Warriors will be able to compensate for an overall lack of height. "If we don’t pressure (the opponents), they are going to see in the middle,” said Wysong, adding that he wants to keep the ball out of the lane. “We are also going to have to force some turnovers to compensate for the rebounding we lost.” All of these objectives are going to require a team effort. This year will bring some role changes for returning players and new responsibilities for the newcomers. Jon Vitaniemi, a 6-3 senior, is the leading returning sewer. As a junior he averaged 15 points per contest. According to Wysong, he

should be a stronger player this season. “Vito has improved his ball handling,” he said. “He will be more of a complete player this year. He'll do more away from the basket.” Jeff Atwood, a 64) senior, is another returning player who had a key defensive role a year ago. “Atwood will be asked to do more than last year," Wysong noted. “Everyone has a different role this year.” The two remaining letterwinners on the 1983-84 Warriors are 6-0 senior Kim Zurcher and 6-2 senior Joel Rhoades. “Both Rhoades and Zurcher will have primary roles on this team,” Wysong said. “I'm just looking at what we have and trying to get a starting point to assess where that's at,” commented Wysong. “This group of players has impressed me with the fact that they want to play and that it is important to them to play well. If 1 have that, I have to be pretty enthusiastic about it,” “It is going to take determination, faith in the coaches and players and execution at both ends for a successful year," he added. “In a schedule like ours you can really get rolled when the fundamentals are lacking." “Our schedule is tough It is the toughest I’ve ever faced as a coach in terms of who we play and where we play them. The teams that are hard to play on the road are the ones we have on the road this year,” said Wysong. “This team is going to need the mental discipline to get through the ruts,” he concluded. “You’ve gotta be tough to hang tough.”
