Swimmers have experience
By TOM CHARLES Sportswriter Despite the presence of eight returning letterwinners, swim coach Tim Caidwell is not making any predictions about the season until he sees his seniors perform under pressure. “We lost an outstanding class to graduation,” noted Caldwell. “This year’s seniors have never really been under pressure to perform. There has always been somebody above them whom they could rely on.” Last year’s seniors set school records in eight of 11 events on the way to a 14-2 record, leaving Caldwell with some big holes to fill. Stepping into those leadership roles will be a group of six returning seniors — three of whom had a part in last winter’s school record blitz. Heading the list of senior returnees is freestyler Bob Galloway. Galloway, who swims the 500 freestyle and individual medley events, was part of the 400 freestyle relay which qualified for the state finals last season. He is one of the main guns in Caldwell’s attack. “Bob is head and shoulders above the rest of the team,” said Caldwell. “He is definitely our swimming leader.” Behind Galloway are freestyler Brad Overmyer, who was part of a record-setting medley relay team last winter; butterflyer Bret Hite, also part of a recordsetting relay; breaststrokerTodd Smith; backstroker Benj Reed; and diver Phil Zachary. Two juniors, freestyler Jon Shoemaker and diver Gary Miller, round out the list of returning letterwinners. “We are not really weak anywhere,” said Caldwell. “I should be able to field a senior in every event. That gives us good experience.” Despite the loss of three-time NLC champ Greg Day, diving should once again be the team’s strong point. Letterwinners Zachary, who finished fourth in the sectional, and Miller are back for another season under the tutelage of diving coach Rex Rymers. They will attempt to preserve the school’s five-year

hold on the NLC diving crown. The race for the overall NLC title should be interesting this year. Goshen, the traditional conference powerhouse was hit hard by spring graduations. “They will be strong, but not awesome,” noted Caldwell. “This year they won’t be a shoe-in for anything.” With a weakened Redskin squad, the door has swung open
wider for schools like Concord, Warsaw and Wawasee. Concord had a young team last year and all but two of the Minutemen returned this winter. Warsaw lost a lot of swimmers, but Caldwell still anticipates the Tigers to be tough. At this point he is not ready to make any predictions as to whether or not his team can improve on its second place finish of a year ago. “We are simply going to have to wait and see how we are going to perform,” he said in regard to the conference title hunt. At the sectional level, Elkhart Central will join Goshen as the teams to beat. In last year’s sectional, the Blazers nipped Wawasee by 11 points to capture second place. According to Caldwell, if the Warriors are going to improve on that standing

they are going to have to show better depth. “1 think this team really has the capacity to develop,” Caldwell noted. “It is my job to push them to expand, to tell it like it is and to help the swimmers learn from their mistakes.” Caldwell’s crew has been putting in long hours at the pool in preparation for tomorrow night’s

home opener with Huntington North. The swimmers put in approximately 9,000 yards of work per day in the morning and evening practice sessions. “These kids have a lot of pride in themselves and the team,” said Caldwell. “They look at their hard work and their accomplishments and that is the reward.”
