Responding to the gift of life
By PAUL F. SHRIDER North Webster Church Os The Brethren Life is a gift from God. It is not of our own doing. We did not create ourselves, and we are dependent on conditions beyond ourselves for our existence. How we look at life, and the life of those about us, makes a great difference on how enjoyable life really is. The parable of the laborers in the vineyard in Matthew 20:1-16 gives keen insight into the gift of life and how we appreciate it. The story is of an employer with a vineyard ready for harvest and people needing to support themselves and their families. One early morning, the employer hires every available person and agrees to pay a denarius —a generous amount for the day’s work. So the harvest begins At mid-morning, at noon and at mid-afternoon, more unemployed people are discovered. Being assured they will be paid what is right, they go to work. An hour before quitting time, others are found who have had no work that day. Being offered an opportunity to work the remaining hour of the day, realizing that scraps'and crusts are better than no food for their families, they, too, go to work. As the day ends, each employee is paid a denarius regardless of how long he worked. Each was assured for himself and his family life and its necessities for another day. However, those who had worked all day lodged a complaint with the steward because they had received no more than those who had worked only one hour. Surely someone who had worked all day should receive more than someone who had worked only one hour. But the owner of the vineyard responded

simply that they had received a full day’s pay as agreed upon, therefore, they should take their pay and go. They had not been wronged. They simply interpreted generosity to others as wrong to themselves. When we examine the situation from a modern labor relations point of view, we run into difficulties. There does appear to be inequity. Someone got too little, or someone got too much. From our particular viewpoint we would tend to agree that those who worked all day had gotten too little. But the story of Jesus is not dealing with fair labor relations as we look at them. He is talking about people’s right to life and sustenance, and how one responds to the gift of life. From his perspective a person in the ghetto of India or down by the tracks in the inner city is just as much entitled to life and sustenance for his family as is the person in suburbia of Northern Indiana. The wage agreed upon was a denarius —a basic amount to sustain life. As the story goes, everyone, regardless of how long he worked, was given the basic amount to sustain life. Everyone, whether they lived at the time of Abraham or in the 21st century, whether they lived to the age of 101 years or 101 days is given life. And it can be further pointed out that how we respond to that life has to do with how enjoyable life can be. Although those who worked all day received adequate pay for comfortable living, they didn’t enjoy it because they were too busy looking at what others had. The good fortune of others kept them from enjoying their own favorable circumstances. If others had not been treated so generously they would have en-

joyed their own lot more thoroughly. All along we attempt to regulate the generosity of God who gives life to all people regardless of where they live, or the opportunities afforded them. We have this same difficulty when it comes to life’s eternal rewards. We would have greater favor given to the person who works 25 years or a lifetime for the Lord than for the thief on the cross. To some, we would relegate a place just inside the bounds of heaven, but to us who served long and well, our eternal home should be up the hill close to the throne of God where we can more clearly hear the harmony of angelic hosts. But the Master talks in different terms. In God’s plan, life in abundance is available to all, and the home of eternal bliss is also offered in generosity. “Whatever is right I will give you’’ is the promise of the Giver of life. God makes all of us the same offer and he fulfills his contract. We can rely on God’s faithfulness to man. Every event and experience of life is a part of the vineyard story. Life is a blessing and it is to be enjoyed to its fullest. None of us deserve as much as we get. But sadly enough, the joys of life are also diminished in proportion to our attempt to control the generosity of God. What seems to be injustice under God’s rule is evidence of his care for us, and even more, of his generosity to others. How do you respond to the gift of life? “Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God." — Matthew 22.29
