Milford's Main street

THERE WERE no prizes for Halloween displays this year but if there were and this reporter had served as judge the first prize would have to go to the Alex Lozano family of South Main Street. The four visitors pictured above were found “relaxing” in their front yard. The “family” really caught the attention of motorists driving past the Lozano home. Truly, it was a delightful display. And, recognition would also have to go to Evans Family Store for its lighted window display. It will be interesting to see what these people do at Christmas time, which by the way is fast approaching. Someone counted the days and there are only 52 days left. . . THIS COLUMN had a nice note from John C. Hoerr, a resident of the Apostolic Christian Home in Peoria, 111., noting that he observed his 88th birthday on October 31 — Halloween! John is the father of Robert Hoerr of r 1 Milford and recalls when he and Joe Baumgartner, brother of The M-J publisher, were World War 1 friends. He wrote, “It was he (Joe) who ordered the large rock near the library at Milford with the listing of those who went into the service in 1918.” THE GROCERY stores in our community are making changes — Campbell’s is now open 8 a m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday and Schwartz’s Super Valu has added reach through curtains to the freezers as a means of energy conservation. AT LONG last the sign has been installed on the community building to make it easier to find for visitors to Our Town. This

scribe likes the sign and congratulates the Milford Area Development Council on its choice of style. Milford citizens have no trouble finding the community building as it is a very busy place. TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) members of the Lions Club will host a public meeting for the viewing of “The Chemical People." Public television. First Lady Nancy Reagan and civic groups across the country are joining together to spearhead the nationwide action program on schoolage drug abuse. Viewings will be held at the community building at 7:30 p.m. both tonight and next Wednesday, Nov. 9. Those present will watch the program and discuss the problems facing the Lakeland area. Among those present will be Wawasee High School Principal Dr. Howard Hull, Jr. This ambitious campaign has the support of the first lady. She will host the two one-hour television specials on PBS with funding by The Richard King Mellon Foundation and Metropolitan Life Foundation. As host, she will take a leadership roll in stimulating communities to set up task forces. Nancy Reagan
remarks, “We are in danger of losing an entire generation unless we act now to educate ourselves and our children. ‘The Chemical People’ is a powerful tool and I am pleased to be part of the project.” A nine-year study sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and conducted by the University of Michigan's Institute of Social Research, on which "The Chemical People” will be based, reveals substance abuse in America is the highest of any developed country in the world. The Lakeland area is not immune to school-age drug abuse problems. People . . . attendance at this meeting will show you care, that you are concerned about the drug problem in this community and you want to do something about it! ON SATURDAY a chili supper will be held in the community building from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. with MAD sponsoring the event. Profits will be used for utility bills during the coming winter. The meal will feature chili and dessert will be included. Carry outs will be available, but persons should take their own pan for the chili. ALL MILFORD voters will cast their ballots at the community building next Tuesday. The election is for town board members and a clerk-treasurer to take office on January 1. SPEAKING OF the election, Monica Bice, Dennis Wuthrich and Pat Ritter have all said they will furnish rides for those who otherwise would not have away to reach the community building to vote. Persons wanting a ride should call 658-4709 or 658-4451. THE EMS will sponsor a slide program and discussion on coming EMS classes at the community building at 7:30 p.m. on November 10. Pam Gaume from Goshen Hospital will be present to explain the classes and answer any questions. EMS members note that while they are looking for new EMTs they would like community support at this meeting even from people who are considering becoming an EMT with this volunteer unit and from those who don't want to become EMTs. The meeting will be informative for all. Truck tangles with NIPSCo overhead lines A Beer and Slabaugh dump truck tangled with NIPSCo overhead lines at 5:11 a.m. this morning (Wednesday) and lost.
