A new thing springs forth
By JAMES E. OTIS Wawasee Community Church A beautiful verse of Scripture is found in Isaiah 43:19: ‘Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make away in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” It is the promise of God for the restoration of the nation of Israel. Os course, we recognize that the Church of today is the "spiritual Israel.” and can claim such promises as these as Her own. This verse really touches on God’s favorite business: Creation. From the forming of the heavens and the earth, the animals and other creatures, right down to His crowning creation which is man, God has shown His love for creating. But what is even more moving is when we reach the personal discovery that God is also concerned with preserving that which He had brought into existence. His great heart of love compels Him to do so. Isn’t it reassuring to know that God did not just slap the universe, our world and us together and then frivolously send us whirling off into eternity without another thought? God is not irresponsible. His tender involvement extends to every single one of us. Let the power of that fact impact you for a moment. “Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you ” Os course, many of us today cannot identify with God’s love and care for us. We are not comforable with God-thoughts, because we don’t truly understand Him. Perhaps we only feel a sense of guilt and personal failure where God is concerned. We sense that we do not measure up and that God is bitter against us because of it. If you find yourself in that predicament, there is hope

for you! You see, that very feeling is evidence not only of God’s love for you, but also of His up-to-the-moment activity in your life. A feeling of discomfort about God is actually a ministry of the Holy Spirit to your heart. God cannot have fellowship with that which is sinful. It would violate His absolute attributes of purity, truth, holiness and justice. God cannot defile Himself by joining with that which is unclean. His nature prohibits it, and demands that sin be punished and paid for. Sin must be condemned, and indeed it is condemned already in the Kingdom of God. Yet still there prevails that unyielding desire to preserve and enjoy His creation in God’s heart. Which is why He designed the plan of salvation, sending Jesus Christ to live a perfect life and to die as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. The way to a God-empowered life is through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We must believe in Him as the Son of God, the Atonement for sin and the Way of salvation We must accept Him on a personal level as the Lord of our lives. John writes, “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” All of which is to say that through Christ, God is offering us perfect spiritual harmony and peace. And a feeling of discomfort about God is merely His way of showing us our need of Him and His love for us. It is the “drawing" ministry of the Holy Spirit, beckoning us to come home. The Bible says that, “No man can come unto except the Father which hath sent me draw him.” We are drawn to God through this sense of need which is emplanted within our hearts as the Holy Spirit reproves us of “sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” Not to condemn us, but to offer us
the joyful alternative of life in Jesus Christ. It is a mystery of creation, really. Because the moment we receive Christ, our lives are made new. II Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. " This is the new life dynamic behind the born again experience. It is an act of creation, made possible by Quist’s blood, shed for the remission of our sins. A price which extends back through all of history, buying back every man, woman or child who ever lived and tried to honor and serve God with their lives, even before the time of Christ. It is why David was inspired to pray, “Create in me a clean heart, 0 God; and renew a right spirit within me.” The same act of recreation extends forward through time from Calvary and reaches us today as we respond to God’s invitation to know Him through His Son. The moment we do this, God begins to act not just upon us, but within us. And His promises become ours to claim and to apply to our personal circumstances. The “new thing” springs forth within us, and we find the spiritual way through the wilderness and the spiritual rivers in the desert. God’s creative power saturates our lives, and the old patterns of sin dissolve, giving way to the renewed, positive, radiant Christian life. What forceful truth this is! No matter what our position in life, no matter what we have done, no matter how we have failed, loused up, or blown it: God created us, He loves us, and He wants to restore us through Jesus Christ. But the question might be asked, “How does this relate to a newspaper column?” Very simply. It is the foundational truth of Christianity, and the message of hope around which the entire

ministry of Wawasee Community Church revolves. And God has given us the thrilling opportunity to tell the story, from a white frame building on the corner of South Harrison and Benton Streets in Syracuse. For over 83 years, the message has been shared for this facility. For the past 20. not much has happened there in the way of dramatic growth. But in June of 1983, a group of highly dedicated lay people came together to claim God’s promise that in Syracuse, through this church. He in fact desires to “do a new thing.” It is a new thing which will transform many people, because the simple truth of God’s Word has been recreated within our hearts, and has renewed our spirits. It is a living example of God’s power to reach people today. It is a living witness to the fact that God still touches that which is fragile and weak, and by that touch infuses His creative energy into it, enabling progress and growth which is possible in no other way. That is His message for our community through this ministry. And that is His message for you personally. As we progress in the development of Wawasee Community Church, we invite your scrutiny. We are striving to reach everyone with our message of hope and life. And we wish to convey to you that our hearts are with our community. Our prayers ascend for you, in concert with the Apostle Paul who wrote, “For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing 1 make mention of you always in my prayers.” Remember that in Wawasee Community Church of the Nazarene, as in every Christhonoring church, you’ve got a friend. Watch us grow together as God uses our ministries to meet people’s needs.

Go to your house of worship; it might surprise you P Ej « <M ave you heard any good sermons lately, or has that busy, hectic life of yours kept you away from your House of Worship for so long that you are not awafe of the changes that may have taken place there? No, the tenets of your religion have not changed, but the method of teaching them might have. The cold austerity of former days has been replaced by a warm, friendly atmosphere; with inspiring sermons delivered in a positive, down-to-earth manner that you can relate to, with modern examples and even touches of humor to illustrate the point and reveal the timelessness of human nature. So no matter how troubled or depressed you may feel at the start of the service, you will leave there filled with a renewed hope for the future. You will learn that this, after all, is the real purpose of faith, if you will just give it a try.
