Warriors close season with 20-3 loss

By TOM CHARLES Sports Writer A cold autumn wind and a solid Warsaw defense combined to freeze Wawasee’s offensive attack in a season-ending 20-3 loss at Warsaw last Wednesday. A small crowd witnessed the Tigers pull away in the second half to record their seventh straight victory in the series. Warsaw now owns a 10-4-1 advantage in the county rivalry. “It is always satisfying to go out on a winning note,” said Tigers’ mentor Kevin Westover after the contest. “It’s been one of those years. We were in a rough cluster.” Neither team could mount much offense in the first quarter. The Warriors mounted a good drive on their second possesion of the contest only to lose the football when Doug Jeffreys picked off a Steve Galegor pass and returned it to the Warriors’ 28. The Tigers quickly moved the pigskin down to the 10 yard line. The Tigers did not get any further, however, as Jason Keim and Mike Hernandez made two important tackles on third and fourth down runs. The Tigers made good use of their next possesion. Driving 80 yards in seven plays, Warsaw put the first points on the board when Chad Hopkins took the ball from Jeff Grose on a counter dive play and rambled 15 yards for the score. “We had trouble defending against the counter dive play most of the evening until late in the third quarter,” noted coach Myron Dickerson. “It was the simple fact that our linebackers were over pursuing the play and getting walled off by the Warsaw offensive linemen.” Following another short Wawasee drive, the Tigers took over and tried some razzle-dazzle. On fourth down, punter Lance Perry faked the punt and tried a reverse. He fumbled the ball, however, and Wawasee came up with its best field position of the night. The Warriors looked as though they were headed for six until penalties got in their way. From a first and ten situation at the 12 yard line, the Warriors moved steadily backwards. The drive ended on Kris Cox’s 40-yard field goal into a strong wind. The second half belonged to the Tigers as they ground out yardage and put the clamps on the Warriors offense. They did not waste much time extending their lead as they marched 66 yards in nine plays to boost the score to 14-3. The final nail in the Warriors’ coffin came with just 1:38 left on the clock. Grose dropped back at the Wawasee 40 yard line and released a bomb which slipped into the arms of a speeding Tracey Furnivall, who stepped into the end zone. “The score is not indicative of the total football game,” said Dickerson. “We gave up that long touchdown pass at the end which could have been intercepted.” “We moved the ball well against Warsaw, but we did not play the kind of consistent football that you have to play to win,” he added. Steve Yoder, the rugged backfield ace for the Warriors, led the team with 98 yards in 19 carries. Galegor completed six of 20 parses with two interceptions, but several of his incompletions were passes that should have been caught. “Our offensive line play was definitely better than what it was against Culver,” said Dickerson. “I thought there was some real improvement there. But we did let down in some key situations.” Hopkins led the Tigers with 160 yards in 27 carries. He was followed by Rich Seitz who chipped in with a career-high 61 yards. Grose completed four of 13 passes and was under heavy pressure from the Warriors’ defense at several points in the second half. “I thought we did a decent job of putting pressure on Grose,” Dickerson said. “Defensively we gave up four big plays and that’s what hurt us.” “We would have had to play a perfect game to win,” said Dickerson, who added that the Warriors did better than many people thought they would. “At the beginning of the season, if you would have asked everybody that with 1:38 left to go would you think that we’d be 14-3 against Warsaw, everybody would have laughed.” As it turned out, the Warriors had the last laugh. A year of ups and downs

The 1983 version of Wawasee High School football will go into the record books as a saga of ups and downs. Coach Myron Dickerson, whose young squad began the season without the benefit of a jamboree, saw his team fight the battles of inexperience all season long. The Warriors started out better than most people expected, winning three of the first five contests. However, the offense stalled out in the next five games due to turnovers and some tough defensive opponents. The Warriors were 1-4 down the stretch. “We had a starting center (Jeff Morgan) back on offense,” said Dickerson, “and that was it.” Sophomore quarterbacks Steve Galegor and Brad Traviola did a good job in their rookie seasons as signal callers. Both young men showed signs of good things to come while learning the ropes against more seasoned competition. Steve Yoder, who rushed for 666 yards, was a key part of the Warriors’ offensive attack. He had two games in which he totaled nearly 100 yards. Kris Cox was another important offensive weapon. His punting, kick-offs and field goals provided Dickerson with some extra punch. In the end, however, it was turnovers and untimely penalties which kept the team out of the end zone. On the year, the Warriors gave the pigskin away a total of 36 times. Defensively the team was vulnerable to the big play. Dickerson credits this to inexperience. “We had two kids playing linebacker who had never played the position before,” he noted. “We had some problems in the secondary. We had a couple kids playing back there for the first time. When you make a mistake back there you are talking about six points. That was evident on the first play of the season and in the last game of the season.” Tony Blackburn was one of the bright spots on the defensive unit. His good field sense enabled him to make countless clutch tackles and several important interceptions. According to Dickerson, the Bremen and East Noble games were both good defensive efforts. “Against East Noble we did some very good things,” he said. “At Bremen we intercepted the ball three or four times against a good passing team. Those ups and downs are just indicative of experience. Looking ahead to next fall, Dickerson is excited about the prospects of having a core of returning players. “The brightest spot has to be is that we’ll go into next season with a great challenge for the quarterback position between two young men who have at least played in five varsity games,” he said. “They will have some idea of the offense and what we want to do.” “We’ll also have a running back (Steve Yoder) who has played a full season and rushed for nearly 700 yards. That is more than (Ross) Dahlstrom had as a junior.” Todd Yeager should be able to return to the line up after suffering a knee injury this fall. His return would be a big boost to the offensive line. “People who have played on the JV will have to come up and give the team support,” he con-
