The foundation regularly mails inspirational literature to nearly 800,000 people in 120 countries and sponsors the Positive Thinkers Network, which reaches millions across the country and overseas with Dr. Peale’s broadcast messages. On Sunday, the final day of the School of Practical Christianity, the participants attended a service conducted by Dr Peale at Marble Collegiate Church in New York city, where he is in his 52nd year as senior minister.

OUR VIEW I A weekly guest column provided by Lakeland community ministers. /I r ~~' Explaining the Religious Society of Friends
Ry JEAN STEWART Quaker Haven The Religious Society of Friends is more commonly known the world over as Quakers. This is really a nickname but widely accepted. The Friends or Quakers are not entirely new to Kosciusko County as they have owned and operated a youth camp on the east shore of Dewart Lake for over 50 years. There has been Sunday worship during the summer months since the 1960 s in the log chapel on the camp grounds. A continuous meeting for worship during the remaining winter months is just starting its fourth year. We meet at 10 a.m. each Sunday in the new main building on the camp grounds and this is open to all who would like to meet and worship with us. Our Sunday School for both adults and children starts at 9 a.m. in the same building. Since the Religious Society of Friends is not well known in this area, let me take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about us. A man by the name of George Fox is credited with starting the Friends movement in England during the birth of Protestantism in the early 1600 s. He had attended various types of worship services and realized that God did not live only in special buildings or speak to men through special people. The true church was not a building hut a gathering of people. Hence you will often hear our worship called a “meeting” and the people referred to as the “church” and the building a “meeting house.” The early Quakers wore the plain clothes to set themselves apart from royalty and the state church. George Fox was soon known as a “seeker” and bits of truth would suddenly sort themselves out in his mind.

Os course his discoveries soon spread and today the Quakers as a group are known for: fair dealing, honesty in trade, temperance in food and drink, justice in courts, high ideals in education and family life, no separation between religion and everyday life. Men and women play equally important rolls. Quakers believe there is something of God in every man and woman to be experienced daily. There are no outward sacraments, but we do believe in spiritual communion with God frequently. We do believe in baptism of the Holy Spirit. Early Quakers took literally the commandment of Jesus to “swear not at all” and refused to acknowledge the double standard of truth in the taking of an oath. There are still many Quakers today that refuse to take an oath saying that if their word is not good enough then the oath is meaningless also. Quakers have traditionally sought non-violent solutions to conflicts. This is strictly a matter of conscience between an individual and God and many Quakers have served in the armed forces. However, since World War I, Quakers have been recognized along with the nonites and Church of the Brethren as peace doctrine churches and may agree to work their term of service not carrying fire arms but in a supportive role such as medics. Many of the early customs of the church are no longer practiced such as the plain clothes because the religious freedom that is more prevalent today deems it unnecessary. You will find several women ministers today as well as women holding key positions in the church. There is no creed as such; the complete Bible is our guide. There is a list of “queries” that an individual is

to ask himself frequently to guide his life in a Christ-like manner. The early Quaker church has many different branches today as most churches do. Some do not have regular ministers or a programmed worship and sit in meditation until the Spirit leads someonetoshare with the group. Some of the characteristics you might find common in the various churches are a strong sense of social concerns, education is a strong point, and nonjudgmental as each man and woman answers only to God and not to each other. The various Quaker groups work together in such organizations as Friends World Service Commit tee, Friends Volunteer Services. Friends Committee on National Legislation and World Society of Friends. Unlike some churches who have a strong upper governing body, the Friends churches make

their own decisions at the lower level, hire their own ministers, own their own buildings and send delegates to a yearly meeting to work on a few committees that offer their services to the meetings on a request basis. Earlham College at Richmond is a Friends school and there are several others throughout the United States We have mission work in the states as well as many foreign countries including the West Bank of Israel. One of the first things that was started in the mission field as well as the new settlements in the United States were schools. Most religious holidays are celebrated for their spiritual significance, however, the beauty of the earth in the fall and thankfulness for harvest is the positive aspects of this time of year.
Kate Hibschman welcomed everyone to the meeting and Gwen Williams led the group in singing the new theme song, “When There's A Rainbow?' Minutes from the last meeting were read and approved and committees reported on coming events for the new year. Kate Hibschman reviewed the coming themes for the next few years, sharing with the group the meanings and where the group is headed. All were reminded to remember to use the rainbow as the promise of God Dues were collected and each member received a new secret pal with prayer offered and refreshments served by Cheri Byrd, hostess.
