Treats for all
By JILL MCKOWEN Extension Agent. Home Ec. At the end of this month, many youngsters will walk the streets in costumes, knocking on doors wanting treats to prevent tricks. What treats are you going to present to these scary monsters, magic princesses, or cheery witches? Take your pick of the following ideas and prevent youngsters from playing tricks on you. Orange J ack-O-Lanterns — Oranges can provide a nutritious snack for children. A fun project is to decorate oranges for trick-or-treaters or Halloween party favors. Make them into jack-o-lanterns by decorating with a permanent marker. BbF CLOSE-UP OF POLAND — Stan Paulauskas will present the second program of the Travel and Adventure Series sponsored by the Lakeland and Milford Kiwanis Clubs on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wawasee High School auditorium. “Reflections of Poland” will give a close-up view of the Poles and their country. Paulauskas, Cleveland, Ohio, native, is particularly motivated to know and understand different cultures in depth. When traveling and getting acquainted with a country, he tries to allow enough time for more than a cursory knowledge. Paulauskas will present secrets he has uncovered in his trips through the country in a lively and informative way.

Ghost Sticks — Three pounds white chocdate, aluminum foil, oil for greasing foil, 15 to 20 wooden ice cream sticks, 42 chocolate chip pieces. Grate and melt white chocolate until smooth in top of double boiler over simmering water. Cover baking sheet with foil and grease lightly. Place sticks on baking sheet, four inches apart. Spoon melted white chocolate in ghost shapes over top of sticks. Use chocolate pieces for eyes. Refrigerate on baking sheet until chocolate is firm. Makes 15 to 20 ghosts. Ghost Suckers - For a creative treat to give neighborhood ghosts and gobblins, make ghost like suckers from string licorice, round suckers and soft white tissues. Place a sheet of tissue over the top of each sucker, gather it under candy and tie tissue with black string licorice. Make two dot eyes on your ghost with marker. Coupon for Special Treaters — Give special witches and super-heroes a gift coupon for a meal or treat at a local fast-food restaurant. A coupon for free fries, an ice cream cone or other food treats can extend the Halloween fun for weeks after the holiday has ended. Cherry witches, ghost and gobblins, magic princesses, and scary monsters expect scrumptious treats and delightful tricks on Halloween. ORDAINED INTO CHRISTIAN MINISTRY - Sarah Martin Tuttle was ordained into the Christian Ministry Sunday, Oct. 9, at Rock Church located in the Lake Wawasee area, Syracuse. Mrs. Tuttle and her husband, also a minister, committed their lives to full time Christian service in 1971. She is currently doing her ministerial studying. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Martin of Danbury, N.C., and is married to Dr. Gary M. Tuttle. They have three son, Luke. Nathanael and James. Mrs. Tuttle will now officially join her husband as pastor of the Rock Church.

Annual haunted mansion opens October 28
Once again this year, the Leesburg United Methodist Church will sponsor a “Haunted Mansion’’ for children and adults Island Chapel sets annual Rally Day Marshall Lawrence, program director for a local radio station, will present the Rally Day program at Hastings Island Chapel United Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1:30 p.m. Before the program, all area residents are encouraged to attend Sunday School classes at 9:30 a.m., Worship Service conducted by Rev. David Widmoyer at 10:30 and a carry-in dinner at 12:30 p.m. at the rural Milford church. All donations from the Rally Day program will benefit churchsponsored projects.

of all ages on three consecutive nights, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28,29 and 30, from 7 until 10 p.m. Last year, more than 2,100 people took a trip through the mansion and a hayride down the “dark lane. ” According to church members, this year’s hayride and mansion will be “bigger and better,” for visitors* enjoyment. The haunted mansion is located two miles west of the Peoples' State Bank on SR 15 in Leesburg and is a church-wide annual fundraiser. There is a small admission charge with popcorn and cider available to all visitors. Bethel women return to school days President Maryann Dowty presided over the business meeting and gave reports on the recent bake sale, chicken barbecue and women’s camp at Bethel Church of the Brethren. The theme for the women’s fellowship meeting was “Back to School” with Berniece Dwyer giving devotions from Proverbs that pertained to instruction. Naomi Waggy was the school principal and teachers for the evening were Lane Robison, Kate Doty and Sue Price. Pat Reuter presented a monologue of a missionary in China. Rosetta Miller and Iva Neff, hostesses for the evening, provided sack lunches, punch and coffee for refreshments. Apple cider, applesauce, carmel apples - there are so many ways to use the versatile apple. During this apple season is the time to take advantage of the plentiful supply in your favorite recipe. Here are some additional apple recipes you might like to try FRESH APPLE COOKIES 4 cup shortening 1 Vs cups brown sugar legg 4 cup milk 1 tsp. soda 4 tsp. nutmeg 4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. cloves 1 cup unpared finely chopped apples 1 cup raisins 4 cup nuts 2 cups flour Mix all together and drop on baking sheets. Bake at 400 degrees for 11 to 14 minutes. FROZEN APPLE LOAF 1 (84 oz.) can crushed pineapple 4 cup granulated sugar 4 tsp. salt 3 T. lemon juice 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup heavy cream, whipped 2 cups diced, unpared apples 14 cups miniature marshmallows 4 cup finely chopped nuts Drain pineapple, reserving juice. Add enough water to juice to make 4 cup. Combine sugar, salt and lemon juice in small saucepan. Gradually stir in reserved juice and eggs. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Cool. Fold in whipped cream, apples, marshmallows, nuts and pineapple. Pour into lightly oiled 9x5x3-inch loaf pan. Cover with foil and freeze. Invert onto a serving plate and remove loaf pan. Makes 8 servings. APPLESAUCE PUFFS 2 cups Bisquick 4 cup sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon legg 4 cup milk 2T. oil , 1 cup applesauce Combine all ingredients in bowl. Stir vigorously for 30 seconds. Grease muffin pan. Fill cups 4 full. Bake at 400 degrees about 15 to 20 minutes. Makes 12 large muffins. Cool slightly. Dip tqps in melted butter, and roll in mixture of 1 tsp. cinnamon and 2 cups sugar. GLAZED APPLE RINGS 4 cup margarine or butter 4 apples, cored and cut into 4 inch rings 4 cup dry white wine or apple juice IT. lemon juice 4 tsp. ground ginger 4 tsp. ground cinnamon 4 cup sugar Heat margarine in 10-inch skillet over medium heat until melted. Fry several apple rings at a time, turning once, until golden brown. (Add more margarine if necessary.) Return

Serve warm with whipped topping, if desired. APPLE NUT PUDDING 2eggs 14 cups sugar 5 T. flour 2 tsp. baking powder K tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla IT. grated orange peel 3 apples, pared and sliced 1 cup pecans Beat eggs until thick. Sift together sugar, flour, baking powder and salt. Add to eggs the vanilla, grated orange peel, sliced apples, pecans and mix thoroughly. Bake in greased 9x9 inch pan for 45 minutes at 325 degrees. Hoerr announce their engagement and upcoming marriage. The couple is planning a January 28 wedding to be held in Cartagena, Columbia, South America. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mrs. Hilda Juan De Eljaiek and the late Chedid Eljaiek. Her fiance is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Hoerr, Milford. Miss Eljaiek Juan will graduate from the Purdue University Krannert School of Management with a bachelor of science degree in general management and marketing in December. Hoerr graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor of science degree in metallurgical engineering and is employed by the Timken Company, Canton, Ohio.
