WORK CONTINUES to pro- > gress on the remodeling of the old Grange hall on West Emeline Street and it looks as if the remodeling will result in a vast improvement to the business district. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Reith purchased the building several months ago with plans to make several offices there. The new Chore-Time plant on North Main Street is also taking shape fast with progress being made on that building daily. VERL AND Opal Harman George were given an old fashioned belling last Thursday evening at their home in Hastings by Island Chapel members. The belling followed a church council meeting. Although it was raining, the friends gathered on the big front porch and after a few minutes of clanging and banging with many different kinds of noise makers, the door was opened and the belters were welcomed into the large living room which filled to capacity. After visiting and remembering old time beltings and the fun in the “good old days,” Mr. and Mrs. George treated their guest with ice cream, assorted nut meats, candy and cookies. The newlyweds recently returned to the farm from a trip through Michigan and Canada and left Friday morning on a trip to the southeast. WE RECEIVED a letter this week from Grace J. Benson Brebner of Twentynine Palms, Calif., noting the following: “1 just finished reading the article in the October 5 issue of The

M-J and wanted to say that I’ve enjoyed reading about Milford’s doctors, past and present. 1 have just one small correction to make in the paragraph about my father and our family. My sister, Helen, took over in my mother’s place, following her death in 1922. 1 believe she taught for two years before returning to Oxford College to finish her schooling. I did not teach in Milford but lived there with my sister. Helen, at Mrs. Katie Stoller’s Shd attended Goshen College where I finished a one-year normal school course in the spring of 1923. “I did some little substitute work for my mother when she took sick in the fall of 1921, but it was only for a brief period. Some of my mother’s students in English may remember that short time I spent with them. If so. I’m pleased. “It might be of interest to some of the people who knew our family to know that Dr. Matthews’ (1 believe 1 have the name right) widow wrote Herring Medical School in Chicago to tell them there was a vacancy caused by her husband’s death and a need for a physician in Milford. Thus, my father and mother moved to Milford and made that their home. “My father died on November 11, 1917, soon after my mother started teaching.” CHUCK AND Betty Myers, former area residents, were in Milford over the past week end visiting their parents. Mrs. C. S. Myers and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bray and other relatives. The Myers now reside in Joplin, Mo.
A TOTAL of 48 family members representing five generations gathered in the Hastings Island Chapel Annex to help Henry Biller celebrate his 90th birthday with a pot-luck dinner at noon on Sunday, Oct. 16. Included among the various gifts and cards of congratulations was a birthday wish from President Ronald Reagan and Nancy. Henry, a former r 2 Milford resident, now makes his home with his four children: Lucy Hollar, Joy Mishler and Kendall Biller, all of Milford; and Pansy Stump of Nappanee. REVIVAL SERVICES continue at the Christian Church tonight. Thursday and Friday with Bob Phillips as evangelist and Ed Erskins as song leader. All are invited to attend the 7:39 p.m. services. THERE ARE a number erf upcoming events slated for our community, including the annual Halloween Festival at the elementary school on Saturday, Oct. 29, and the MAD chili supper slated for the community building on Friday, Nov. 4. Both deserve the support of the community. REV. AND Mrs. David Widmoyer were Thursday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Mishler at a Warsaw restaurant. MR. AND Mrs. Paul Warstler entertained Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gawthrop and Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Mishler on Tuesday evening. Webster man's car slides through interstection Thomas E. Jacobs, 33, North Webster attempted to brake his car as he approached in the corner of CRs2SUN and 10QE last Friday. However, his car slid through the intersection and hit two signs. Leesburg woman's car damaged in nir-ana-nm A car belonging to Julie Ann Hradel, r 1, Leesburg, sustained between S2OO and SI,OOO damage in a hit-and-run incident on Saturday morning.
