Consumer credit counseling service offered at Bowen Center
Consumer credit counseling is now available at the Bowen Center. 850 N. Harrison St., Warsaw. The counseling program began Tuesday, Oct. 11, and will continue every Tuesday. The Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Northeastern Indiana, a not for profit corporation, will be using the office facilities at the Bowen Center for the credit counseling. Credit counseling is for the consumer who has found himself in financial difficulty, perhaps through monetary mismanagement, and who has the desire to place his financial house in order. A Bowen Center spokesman emphasized that there is absolutely no charge to the consumer for the credit counseling services, and the services are available simply by dialing 1-800-552-3650 for an appointment. Industrial and banking management initially brought the need for consumer credit counseling to the attention of the Bowen Center. Business administration director Richard Aker stated that Bowen Center management responded by seeking a highly qualified agency to develop a program. Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Northeastern Indiana was selected because of its nearly 20 years of success and experience. The Bowen Center then extended the

Recently, Bowen Center management and an advisory committee made up of area business, banking and industry officials held a breakfast meeting in Warsaw with Thomas Hufford of CCCS. Hufford explained the credit counseling program to the group and related how the advisory committee could be of assistance. Members of the advisory committee are Jerry Helvey, president of Joe Mater and Associates, Inc.; Richard Snodgrass, vice president. First National Bank; Elmer Bausch, personnel director R.R. Donnelly and Sons. Steve Creighton, vice president. Lake City Bank; Lawrence Castaldi, retired industrialist; Debbie Wiggins, executive director Chamber of Commerce and Milton Holmgrain, administrator Kosciusko County Hospital. Hufford pointed out that many of his clients are “nice middle class people with moderate incomes who suddenly owe money and don’t see any way out.’’ “But,’’ he continued, “it makes no difference how much money a person makes. I can say that the typical clients are the people next door who have reached a point where it’s difficult to handle it (credit) by themselves.’’
Thomas Hufford is the executive director of Consumer Credit Counseling of Northeastern Indiana. The former teacher has been with CCCS since 1976. CCCS is a member of the National Foundation for Consumer Credit, Inc.. Washington, D.C., also a not for profit corporation. Hufford stated his willingness to meet with various groups of creditors, industrial personnel, school administrators, United Way and other service agencies to explain the purpose of consumer credit counseling. Car damaged by vandels while parked in yard Jim Maseman, 206 E. Pearl, Syracuse, reported to police Monday that a car parked in his back yard had been damaged by vandals. The window on the driver’s side of the car had been broken out and a 12-inch 4 by 4 was laying on the front seat. The car is owned by Jo Ann Kline. Damage was estimated at SSO. Perry Fletter escapes injury Perry D. Fletter, 20, 407 Lake Street, Syracuse, was not injured when his pickup skidded across the center line on US 33 in Elkhart County early Monday morning. Fletter’s truck was struck by a southbound auto operated by Sharon Wise Weaver, 27, of Millersburg. Weaver’s auto traveled into a ditch and rolled over as a result of the crash. She suffered multiple cuts and bruises. Pickup damaged, slides on wet road A pickup driven by Kenneth D. Herman, 19, r 1 Leesburg, sustained between SI,OOO and $2,500 damage in a one-vehicle accident on October 13. Herman was traveling north on CR 650E about 7:30 p.m. when his truck slid through a curve on wet pavement and struck a tree. Road sign damaged Jack Spitler, Syracuse, owner of Jack's Sunoco, reported to police that vandals had run over a road sign near the Sunoco station on 816 S. Huntington in Syracuse early Saturday morning and had driven away. Damage to the sign was estimated at S3O.

16 YEARS AGO. OCT. IT. 1973 Strange things are happening in this world of ours, each day for the past week people have been spotting unidentified flyiig objects in the area. Tuesday nigbt one was spotted in Milford with town marshal. Don Drake confirming the The Milford Parent-Teachers Organisation will sponsor two open houses in honor of National Education Week. Homecoming will be hold at the Milford Christian church on Sunday with many events to be featured. Sunday school will begin at 9:30 a.m. with worship services at 10:30 and dinner to be held at the noon hour. The afternoon program will feature a talent program. Members of the United Methodist Women of the Milford church were entertained in the home of Mrs. Richard Dahlstom on Oct. 11. Howard Wilson, director of the Cardinal Center in Warsaw, presented the program for the day. He spoke informally and answered many questions that were asked. 20 YEARS AGO. OCT. 17.1963 Mrs. Theresa Kneller of Columbia City was the honored guest at a dinner in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ritter and son, Paul, of Milford. Mrs. Kneller celebrated her 78th birthday. The state tax adjustment board cut the proposed 12 cent budget for the Milford public library at the courthouse this morning. The rate was cut to 10 cents on the basis that the operating fond could be reduced. Meeting with state board was librarian Dorothea Kerlin. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Clark and family of North Manchester were Saturday evening dinner guests, of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Tucker and family of Milford. Miss Mary Hollar, a student in Chicago, was home last week. Mary had strep throat. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Hollar of Milford. 30 YEARS AGO. OCT. 15.1953 Miss Marilyn Sorensen, a home economics student at Purdue University, has assumed certain duties related to teaching in the home economics classes of the Milford school. At 2:40 today firemen received a call to extinguish a corn picker that was afire on the Albert Kuhn farm three miles north of Milford. When firemen arrived the fire was out. No estimate of the damage was made. The barbecue put on for the public by the Milford firemen was successful enough that is was decided to do it again next year. Four hundred and fifty dinners were served. Mr. and Mrs. Omar Wuthrich, children Susan and Robert, of Fort Wayne, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Chambers at dinner, Sunday. 50 YEARS AGO. SEPT. 19.1933 Dr. Hursey was ill with influenza last week and was unable to look after his business. Mrs. Hursey. who is a registered nurse, took care of his patients while he was ill. Frank Millei reports the loss of quite an amount of corn from some lots in east Milford, belonging to Abe Brown and farmed by Mr. Miller. He also says he knows who took the com and trouble will start if any more is taken. Mr. and Mrs. Keneth Wilkin of Greentown spent the weekend with D.W. Hastings and family.
