Churches undergird LAFF

By DAVID C.MAISH Calvary United Methodist Church In John 17, Jesus prayed for his disciples “that they may be one.” A oneness in the working together of Christian churches in the Syracuse area has already been demonstrated by Summer Boat; In, the Community Thanksgiving Service (to be held this year on the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving) and in the Lenten programs and Easter Sunrise celebration. It is further demonstrated by the monthly Syracuse Ministerial Association meetings lead by Father Dave Hyndman. A new spirit of genuine cooperation exists among mainline Christian churches today. In the past, there was much suspicion and protectiveness displayed between the churches. Fortunately the old pettiness and malice have given way to a genuine spirit for the good of all, and to the Glory of God. When the church I serve decided to start a wholesome learning program for people over age 50 called Learning Adventures For Fun (LAFF), I shared the idea with the ministerial association. They encouraged us to proceed with the program and three sent individuals of their congregation to serve on the operational task force. We also checked with Mr. Wysong who manages evening adult learning programs through Wawasee High School. He too encouraged us to proceed with this daytime offering. Many people feel safer in the daylight and some just cannot drive at night. The Mail-Journal, Anchor Man and others helped us do general promotion of this new program, but it was the churches that distributed the actual registration flier. With all volunteer instructors,

the program was launched on September 14 and offered 12 classes. For four Thursdays, 75 persons joined in wholesome learning. For some protestants, taking the Bible course offered was the first time they had been instructed by a Roman Catholic in exciting prayer and study. Jill Stanley had such fun leading the exercise class that she is continuing to offer such a class now through the Youth Center. One of the students in Maxine McDougal’s “Keeping the Downs Up” class said, “This is not only interesting, it is helpful!” You can’t study the vastness of the stars with Rev. Frank Barcus without feeling appreciation and awe to God, the Creator. There was a real sense of oneness as people from Syracuse, Milford, North Webster and beyond shared the fun of learning and celebrating life. The instructors also indicated that they found it stimulating to share with such interested students. Travelogues after lunch also brought the viewers in touch with the power of a storm, the donated eye service offered to people with no eye care, earlier days on Wawasee and the people of China. James 2. It was decided the ladies should clean the church on October 18 and 19 in preparation for the new floor covering which will be installed October 20 in the kitchen, entrance and restrooms. The group also decided to support two Project 52s and a contest on the books of the Bible was won by Ann Heckaman. Berniece Berger furnished doughnuts and cider for refreshments.
