Honoring the fifth commandment
By DON ROSS Zion Chapel United Brethren Church “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12 (NIV) We hear the story over and over again in today’s society, that children do not honor their parents. Some have gone as far as to say that the fifth commandment is not relevant to today, but we must look at the scriptures to see what they say about the relevancy of the fifth commandment. Paul in Ephesians 6:1-3 gives some instruction to children concerning their parents. He says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for it is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’ — which is the first commandment with a promise — ‘that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’ ” (NIV) There are three important words I believe we should look at in these verses. First, children need to obey. What does it mean to obey? When you obey, you fulfill or comply with the command or instruction of someone. Children are to do what their parents have told them td do. If we were to read Ephesians 6:4, we would realize that parents are not to exasperate or frustrate their children. That means that we allow them to ask questions and to be children, but not at the expense of discipline. The second important word is honor. Honor means high esteem,

fame or glory. Obedience is the duty of the child, honor is the disposition in which obedience is bom. If the child honors his mother and father it will be much more of an automatic reaction for him to obey his parents. The final word is promise. A promise is when you will say that you will do something, with full intentions of doing it. The fifth commandment is the first and only commandment with a promise. The promise is that if you honor your father and mother, you wifi live long in the land that God will give you. Paul makes the promise applicable to all peoples by saying that you will enjoy long life on the earth. In other words, God will bless us for honoring our parents. What does Jesus think of those who break the commandments of God? Matthew 15:3-9 answers that for us. The Pharisees and teachers of the law in the first two verses of this chapter complained to Jesus because his disciples did not follow the tradition of the elders and wash before they ate. Jesus took this opportunity to tell them how he knew that they had changed the law of God with their tradition. The law told them to honor their mother and father, but the tradition said that they could take what they had promised to give their parents and dedicate it to God, thus not giving it to their parents, and it was all right. Jesus called them hypocrites. Why? because they only honored God with their lips, not with their hearts or with their actions. They

observed rules made by man instead of God’s rules. God wants us to love and serve Him, but how can we say that we serve Him if we do not follow His commandments. Jesus told those of His day that they were hypocrites because they served God only outwardly not with their hearts. Would Jesus call us anything different for doing the same thing? If we do not obey God’s commands then we too. like the Pharisees and teachers of the law, are hypocrites. Through the teachings of Jesus and the teachings of Paul, we can see that the New Testament as well as the Old Testament teaches that we need to obey the commandments, making all of the commandments, not just the fifth commandment, relevant for today. First Brethren WMS The monthly meeting of the Women’s Missionary Society of the First Brethren Church was held Thursday, Sept. 1, at the home of Mrs. Harold Gawthrop with 20 members and one guest present.
