“We have 10 people on the varsity, and nine of them played for the varsity last year,” coach Brouwer said. “One of them, Dawn (Baker) Grimm, played for the varsity two years ago, and didn’t go to school here last year, and she’s back now and playing once again.” Brouwer listed Christy Speicher, a junior who is the team’s number one hitter; Anita Swope, a junior setter; Sandy Payne, another junior; Penny Hoover, who started at the end of last season; Marcia Sorensen, Tammy Welborn, and Dawn Young, back from knee surgery, as especially important to the success of this year’s team. Brouwer said the two biggest surprises so far this year had come from Hoover and Young. “Penny Hoover filled in last year when Young got hurt, and was all right, but she’s improved and going to be one of the key players this year,” she said. “I’m also surprised with Young, because I didn’t think she would come back after knee surgery. She’s not quite at full strength, but she’s doing a lot better than I had anticipated.” On Saturday, the Lady Warriors fell to the Mishawaka

volleyball team in a tournament at Plymouth, but the team’s performance against a perennial state power gave Brouwer hope of better things to come. “Two years ago, they were second in the state and three years ago, they were state champions,” Brouwer said. “We went into overtime with them in the first game, and we lost the second game, so we lost the match. However, the scores were 14-12 in the first game, and 15-9 in the second game, so we really gave them a run for the money. I was pleased with our performance.” Despite the season opening loss, the Wawasee volleyball team figures to have a good chance to improve on last year’s 12-7 record, and stay in the chase for the Northern Lakes Conference title. Seeks propaganda Special U.S. envoy Richard Stone recently criticized Salvadoran rebels for making public an offer to meet with him. Stone said that such breaches of confidentiality “might well ruin” efforts to achieve peace in the area.

MAKING WAVES — Although their era as top-notch skiers might be ending, the Smith sisters children just might carry on the tradition. Showing good form are (top photo) Brent, nine, Brian, eight, and Carolyn (Smith) Baker. The other Smith sister, Cathy (Smith) Lamberg, has a hold of four-year-old son Ricki (bottom photo), and beside her are Travis, 14, and Nikki. 10. The Smith sisters were well-known in their teen-age days as championship water skiers. Carolyn was the state champion several years, won the midwest regional, and qualified for the nationals in ski jumping. Meanwhile, sister Cathy placed in nearly every tournament and most recently won the senior women’s divison. They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Smith of Lake Wawasee.

Youth movement underway for girls' swimming

By GARY LEWIS Entering into her 13th season as head girls’ swimming coach at Wawasee, Cindy Peterson will have a young, but experienced group of returnees back this fall to improve on last season’s subpar 4-10 mark. Seven letterwinners, four sophomores and three seniors, and a trio of talented freshman divers greet Peterson this season. “Most of our kids have come through the age-group program,” she said. The summertime program has yielded eight of Wawasqe’s 10 freshmen out for swimming — meaning the Lady Warriors’ could have some undiscovered stars in the wings. “The attitudes of the girls have been really encouraging. Two of them went to camp at IU this summer, so they’re ready to go.’’ Even though she stresses fundamentals during the pre-season workouts, she realizes the importance of off-season work. “It’s not something you can do just in the fall. You really have to work at it,” she said. Because of the time involved in preparing for a swimming season, many girls out for the team are one-sport, or maybe two-sport athletes, so they can use their idle months to prepare. “In the high school level, I would generally support more threesport athletes. But the natural athlete who can compete well in three sports you can spot immediately,” Peterson explained. “So that means, chances are, we’ll get athletes who only go out, and excel, in one sport.” Also helping her program is the activities of the divers who could be Wawasee’s best-ever. The diving team of sophomore Jeanine Gunn, freshmen twins Sherry and

In the swimming events, sprinters Pam Foyle, Michelle Berkey, Lisa Haney and Criss Baumgartner return and longdistance performers Brenda Messenger and Steph Eldridge figure to be the Lady Warriors’ top contenders this season. A major change in the way the meets will be scored this season has Peterson in an optimistic tone at the outset. The IHSAA went to a system which awarded -more points for a first-place finish, meaning that a strong individual could carry a team. “We re not able up with a superstar every year, but I can Come up with several second through third performers.” “That really hurt us last season, and I think the change will benifit up this time,” she added.
