Area youth participate in Haitian mission crusade
By GAIL WIDMOYER Twenty-one area young adults from the Living Gospel Church, Nappanee, recently spent 10 days on a witnessing crusade in Haiti where they got involved with people, saw how the missionaries live and learned to better understand the missionaries’ work. The Nappanee church group, including six Milford residents, was part of a NOW Crusade, a trip designed through OMS International, Inc. (formerly the Oriental Missionary Society, Inc.) for young people in their late teens and early 20s who desire first-hand exposure to foreign missions. Participants from Milford include: Ronn Mikel, son of Mr, and Mrs. Dale Mikel; Eric Beer, sonoLMr. and Mrs. Levi Beer; Lana and Annette Beer, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beer, Jr.; and Christine and Connie Kirkdorffer, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kirkdorffer. The group left the United States on Friday, Aug. 5, for Port Au Prince, Haiti. Before returning to the states on Monday, Aug. 15,

the group had the opportunity to observe native communities, voodoo services and the work of the missionaries as well as serving as witnesses for Christ. ‘’After the trip, we better understood the work of the missionaries and their field,” explained Ellen Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell K. Brown, Goshen. ‘‘ln Haiti, the missionaries are really doing support work while training the nationals to work with the people,” she continued. Once the Hatian natives are trained in the ministry, their work is more effective since the race serves as a common bond. In the process of training natives, the missionaries are confronted with several obstacles to their service. The language barrier is an obvious problem. Haitian people speak creole which is a language formed by combining their native tongue with the European imposed French. Voodoo, the island’s main religion, is another barrier for the mission workers. Surrounded by changing the native’s beliefsis far from easy.
Impressions Watching the missionaries work and observing the Haitian lifestyle left strong impressions on the young people’s minds. “It opens your eyes and makes you appreciate your home,” commented Miss Brown. “The people and their relationship to the Lord was also impressive,” she continued. “They have to depend on Him for everything.” “It was an overall good experience,” added Kelli Beer, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Otto Beer, Jr., New Paris. “It maked me appreciate the freedom I have here (in the states) and gave me a taste of the mission field. If God leads me there, I’ll know what to expect.” Through the trip, Mark

Brookins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Brookins, New Paris, became more aware of the world food supply. “While we were there, we ate real well,” he explained, “but the people there go some days without anything to eat while there is a lot of food going to waste here at home.” Annette Hire, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hire, New Paris, offered incentive to Americans who have always thought of visiting a mission field but haven’t made the trip. “I encourage anyone to go for the experience. It shows us what we take for granted.” Taking a large group of youth served two purposes: first, no one felt alone and second, the nationals were affected by the mis-

it's Monday and I'm tired
By N. DALE MENDENHALL Leesburg United Methodist Church As I sit at my typewriter writing this article, it is a gray, overcast Monday, and I’m tired. But I am not the only one who is. My wife is so exhausted that she could hardly haul herself out of bed and has one of those tired headaches. Even the kids slept in this morning, thankfully. What we need is a day between the week end and Monday to rest up before we return to the tasks which the week days bring. But, alas, there is no such day. You see, there were birthdays to celebrate on both sides of the family. Saturday, which is my day off, was spent with my family visiting, playing games, watching sports, overeating, and leaving late. And when we did get home, there were things to be done that night in order to get ready for Sunday. Sunday we did go to church for worship and Sunday school. Then off we went to spend the remainder of the day with my wife’s side of the family. Except for that time we did eat and celebrate birthdays, all our time was spent playing in the water. It was another late evening as we dragged our bodies between the garage anckthe house in our effort to unload the car. We sighed as we reached the comfort of our beds. Another week end was behind us. Again our leisure activities were anything but leisurely and our recreation was not too re-creational. And whatever happened to our

observing the sabbath? Oh, we did go to church Sunday morning, but Sundays are work days for me as a pastor. Even if that weren’t the case, we still did not spend as much time in church as we did in the water on Sunday. The fourth commandment speaks of the sabbath as being an entire day. It is to be a day devoted to the Lord. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean an entire day at church. But it does mean that the sabbath is to mean more than a time not to work. It is to mean more than visiting with family and friends, watching sports on television or pursuing our hobbies. Going to church in the morning is basic to the sabbath, but it does not in itself fulfill it. The day, not just the morning, is the Lord’s. As such, it is that time set aside for each of us to place ourselves before God through the spiritual disciplines of worship, prayer, study, service, etc. The trouble is that it is so difficult to find a day to do this. For many of us Sunday afternoon and evening are the only time we have each week to spend with our families. Darc we shirk time with them? Yet, dare we shirk time with God? The fourth commandment as found in Exodus reminds us that God hallowed the sabbath by his resting on the seventh day of creation. We are part of that creation. As such, our resource, our only true resource, for our re-creation is that same God who created us. We are his. Can we afford to forego our relationship with him who is the ground of our very being? The fourth com-

mandment as found in Deuteronomy has its basis not in the creation but in the exodus. The sabbath is to be a time for thanksgiving for the liberating work of God in our lives. The Christian sabbath is no longer Saturday but Sunday because on that day we recall with thanksgiving the liberating good news of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Can we allow pressing demands upon us to squeeze out our thanksgiving to God for all that he has done for us? We must take time for God in our lives. We need to take time for our families. We have other demands to which we need to attend. But God is not one among many concerns. He is the primary focus for our lives. Maybe you are not in any position to set aside an entire day for God. But why not start where you are by setting aside a portion of each day for him? It’s Monday and I’m tired. I need to spend some time with God today. Director updates Bashor Home activities Ray Stull, director of Bashor Home, Goshen, will speak on “Summer Activities and Update” to the Bashor Home Auxiliary on Monday, Sept. 12, at 9:15 a.m. Any interested persons are invited to attend the meeting which will occur at Arbogast Center, Bashor Home.
