By DAVID L. HYNDMAN All Saints* Episcopal Church One of the most frequent concerns of Christian congregations is often voiced by saying, “What are we going to do with our youth?” It is an innocent enough question on the surface and is motivated by genuine interest, but for me, that question has a major theological fault. It tends to see a portion of the body of Christ as a “problem” for the rest of the body. “If only that ‘problem’ could be solved, wouldn’t we have something grand?” “How do we keep them in the flock after they’ve seen the world?” In reality we are each of us “problems” to the body of Christ, and the same grace that keeps us faithful is visited on young and old alike. Our Lord Jesus Christ deals with us as persons, unique and free, and he holds us each responsible and accountable for that uniqueness and freedom. The church needs to deal with all its members in the self-same manner. There are often two solutions to the “problem” employed by congregations. The first is to isolate the young from community worship, perhaps providing them with their own service as a substitute for “adult” worship. The basis for this solution is that children need to be educated in the faith before they can understand what goes on in church, as if education meant to “pour in” and not to “draw out.” I have no quar-

What to do with the youth
rel with education, but when it is understood as only what we do with chidren, then the true sense of it is perverted. An infant crying in the worship service may be an annoyance, but if that is perceived as an impediment to worship, then perhaps we ought to re-evaluate what we mean by worship. Or if we think that the church service would be boring to children, perhaps we ought to question what it is we are doing to generate such boredom. As a pastor, in my humanity, I know I have contributed to the boredom of a significant number of adults, but that is not the point. Worship is the faithful offering of ourselves, our souls and bodies. I do not see a specific amount of education or chronological age as a prerequisite to that offering. Worship is what Christians do in community; it is an action of the whole community, young and old alike. Each member contributes to that action as he is able. God sees us and accepts us as we are with all our imperfections and distractions. The concepts of sacred place and sacred time are so important to human personality that we are never too young to experience them even when our response, as it always is, is inadequate. There is a learning in community worship that is too important to deny to any of our members. The second solution to the “problem” is the youth group. The potential value of such groups is so important as not to

be dismissed lightly. The danger here, as I see it, is to use them as a means of control over young people, providing a safe place for young people to do the things that young people do as adults perceive that. The authority structure is usually clearly defined with the power lying squarely, even if benevolently, in the hands of the adult sponsors. Young people are used to the way the world uses power over them, and their response is to submit and subvert in order to meet their own agendas. There are usually two parts to such youth group events: the planned activities as the “religious” part, and the rest as some how secular, a kind of carrot to lead the horse. That’s bad theology. We end up teaching about a God who is on the sidelines of real life as it is experienced by young people, a cosmic version of the other authority figures in our lives. The alternative is to allow the formal agenda of the group to be as close as possible to the actual agenda, that is, the problems that young people are already dealing with in some fashion or another with the pain and unsurety they feel in the process. This requires risk, trust and vulnerability, as a share in power on the part of both young and old. This method is no universal panacea for Christian community for failure will ultimately occur, because failure is the result

of a human nature that is fallen. But it is precisely in this fallenness that we experience the need for God’s saving and redemptive power. A good friend of mine has written, “If we carefully insulate our ministries against failure, against criticism, or conflict or struggle, we are going to be proclaiming a safe Christ, a neat, controllable Christ. And neither the adults nor the young people we deal with live in a safe, neat, controllable world.” Ybung people are constantly making real life decisions. Allowing them to be the church with each other and everyone else, allows them to bring the gospel message to bear on their own experience. The church, for young and old alike, is not something out there to be strived for, or waited for, longed for, or despaired of, but rather something right here already amongst us, whether we want it or not. It is here with all its immediacy and promise, its ambiguity and disaster as real not neat, not under control, but like human life in all its gandeur and misery. _ Youth is not a problem to be solved but a resource, an ally with all the rest of us to be responsible and accountable in service to the gospel as the body of Christ. The greatest gift the church can give any one of its members is his human dignity for it is that the Lord loves, redeems and sanctifies.
