Blind resident becomes certified masseuse
By GAIL WIDMOYER After spending three years “trying to decide what I wanted to do,” Brenda Dahl, Syracuse, is beginning a business that is “new for me and new to this area” — she is a certified masseuse. Brenda spent 19 weeks at the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing since it was the closest facility offering the massage training. “I fell my blindness is beneficial,” commented the 1979 graduate of Wawasee High School. “Patients have a tendency to fight you (the masseuse), and I can tell how tight certain muscle groups are.” Brenda tried factory training but found it to be too monotonous. “I was wanting to get to work, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” she explained. “I'have an older sister who was a certified massuese in L.A., so I decided to try it.” The Procedure Besides relaxing tense muscles and relieving pain, a full body massage improves the patient’s circulation. Before concentrating on problem areas like the lower back, it is essential for Brenda to relax her patient first. “I was told 80 per cent of the people I would

give a massage to would have never had one before,” she said. Depending on the patient, the frequency of follow-up massages and the price of treatments vary. “After the first massage, I will suggest to each patient that they have another treatment for their basic health sake,” Brenda explained. With a portable table, Brenda enters a patient’s home, introduces herself, then begins the procedure. A lubricant in the form of oil or lotion is used to help reduce the amount of friction on the patient’s skin as Brenda performs each of the following strokes: The effelurage forces the blood toward the heart and helps increase the flow of blood to the veins; pettrisage, or small circular movements, are performed on areas that are too small for the
other movements like finger joints; friction increases blood flow to the muscles and helps relax muscles as well as the patient; rolling stimulates the nerves and muscles while helping bring tone to the muscles; hacking stimulates the nerves; and vibration and the nerve stroke end each massage by quieting the stimulated nerves and muscles. While searching for reliable transportation, Brenda plans to begin her practice this week in hopes the new service will become widely accepted in the area. Rev. Blosser to speak at Oakwood The speaker for the August 21, 10 a.m., Oakwood Worship Services, will be Rev. Ted Blosser, pastor of Bristol United Methodist Church. turkey were threatened with extinction. In the early 1900 s, while serving as president, Teddy Roosevelt saw the value of our nation’s wildlife and became a leader in the conservation movement. Conservationists realized that illegal hunting must be controlled and proper habitat must be provided for protection of wildlife. The film pointed out that because of improvements in our conservation practices, elk, white tailed deer, pronghorn antelope, and wild turkey have increased in number so that they are no longer in the endangered species category. Wildlife managers encourage regulated hunting as an important phase of conservation of our unendangered species. During the business session, Sherman Bryant, chairman of the annual corn and sausage roast, reported that the project was very successful. Also during the meeting, Roger Miller displayed the pen set he received for being named outstanding club secretary in the Kiwanis Indiana District.
