While dead or overly mature plants can be left in the garden and later incorporated to loosen and enrich the soil, they also can harbor diseases and insects if so treated. Composting is a better alternative, says Michael Dana. Purdue University extension horticulturist. Composting allows you to adjust the fertility and placement of organic materials. With careful attention, you also can assure the material is insectand disease-free. Although many people think composting is a cross between black magic and granny’s long lost formula, it really is quite simple, says Dana. To begin, pick an out-of-the-way spot in your yard, preferably a shady one near a source of water. Next gather raw organic materials — leaves, garden or kitchen refuse, grass clippings and the like. Break up stalks and Missing youths turn up with father Bianaca Buster, 324 West Pearl St., Syracuse, recently reported to authorities that her two children, ages 3 and l»/ 2 , had wandered off while she was sleeping. stems if possible. A garden shredder is a valuable assistant in this process. Make this first layer six to 12 inches high. Next, sprinkle a complete fertilizer such a 10-6-4 over the first layer to speed decomposition. Finally add a layer of garden soil, then water thoroughly. If possible, add a layer of manure. Continue to alternate layers until the heap is three to four feet high. Slope the sides of the heap slightly inward to form a depression where water can accumulate. Turn the mixture with a spading fork periodically. By early spring the compost should be ready for the garden Compost improves soils and makes even the finest plants grow better, says Dana. It also can save money by disposing refuse while reducing the need for additional fertilizers. Best buy Avoid buying grapefruit with a soft and tender peel that breaks easily with finger pressure.
