The church shall be built
By ROGER EBERLY Bethel Church Os The Brethren “Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it...” are sobering works from Psalm 127:1. There are encouraging and hope-filled words of Christ in Matthew 16:18: “. . . I will build My church . . We have a choice to cooperate with Christ. He does not use forced labor. It seems that we may delay the work, or find ourselves being by-passed. But Christ shall fulfill His promise. The church shall be built! What a challenge for us to decide how involved we are going to be in this most marvelous and exciting work being done in the world today! I will primarily focus on I Peter 2:1-10 which I believe has some helpful words for us. I hope you are encouraged to study this scripture further and to grow and move in faith with a humble and bold awareness that “. . . now '•you are the people of God . . .” From the context in I Peter 1, we see that faith is much more precious thaii gold which perishes — faith made so precious by the precious blood of Christ and His resurrection from < the dead. Thus we come alive. B However we cannot grow on the ■feiunk and poisonous food of I Peter With malice, deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy and slander we would have no appetite for pure spiritual milk. As with Psalm 34:8: “0 taste and see that the Lord is

good ..we need to keep coming to Christ that living stone by which we grow. Christ was rejected by people, but choice and precious in the sight of God. How often do we reject Christ by so filling our lives with other things that He is crowded out? We are to be living stones. A living stone is structured in, does its job, bears its load. Christ the chief cornerstone of the foundation is that marvelous living stone who supports us. As we fit in with Christ we fit ip with God and with one another as living stones. We are to be mutually affirming and supportive of one another. As a covenant people we are held together by our common affection to Christ. How many of us have felt misunderstood or rejected? Christ understands all about being rejected and can help us. It seems that God has key places in His house for rejected ones. How often are we rejecting some of the very ones God is choosing for special places in His house? Stumbling over some of the least of these is stumbling over Christ — being disobedient to Christ, His teachings and ways. For the fulness of God’s blessings, we need to be related with some we would possibly at first scorn or reject — thinking they have little or nothing to offer. It seems that God has ingeniously and gloriously hidden about 25 per cent Os what is needed for the fulfillment of His house among those who are quite different

from us or who sometimes rub us the wrong way. Nevertheless, He has specially chosen both them and us. Truly Jesus’ teaching about logs and specks in our eyes will prove practical many times along our way together. When will we learn that what we say and feel about others gives a lot of clues about who we really are, and that our theology reflects a lot of what is going on inside of us? As we keep coming to Christ, we can overcome our stumblings over one another and enter into more of the glories of I Peter 2:9-10: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” The vision is before us. The church shall be built! Let us encourage one another to keep coming to Christ, and proclaiming His excellencies, and together being the people of God now. What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. — Hugh Mulligan

Local residents take medicine to Africa through story telling
By LOU ANN GOOD Dr. Norman and Carol (Spicher) Waggy and their daughter are leaving for Africa on September 1, as story-telling medical missionaries. Dr. Waggy is the son of Arlie and Naomi Waggy, Milford. Story telling is a relatively new concept of teaching health care to natives steeped in folklore and superstition. Dr. Waggy enjoys repeating the pilgrimage of Church of the Brethren missionaries who discovered the successfulness of combining modern health care methods with the Africans’ story-telling traditions. When medical missionaries first arrived in the African village of Garkida, they discovered one-half of the children died before they were five years old. A large percentage of the infants succumbed from the ancient practice of cutting the umbilical cord with a

STORY-TELLING MISSIONARIES — Dr. and Mrs. Norman (Carol) Waggy and their daughter, Crystal, are beginning a new life as medical story-telling missionaries in Africa. By telling stories that deal with medical practices, the Waggys will help natives understand medical practices in their own terms. Both Waggys have an interest in helping people and plan to be missionaries for a large part of their life.

sharp stone that had been rubbed in cow dung. Medical personnel knew the babies contracted tetanus from this primitive practice, but local folklore insisted a bird stole the baby’s soul by sucking it out through the umbilical cord. Convincing the natives to stop the deadly practice proved difficult. For 40 years, medical missionaries failed to dent the mortality statistics. As missionaries sought more meaningful methods to teach the natives, they observed that feast days were highlights of the African culture. During the celebration, ancient traditions and folklore were passed on to future generations through story telling, song, dance and play acting. With the help of natives, missionaries constructed a story of two mothers who cared for the babies. Mother A cut the baby’s umbilical cord according to the age-old method; Mother B

sterilized a string and a razor blade, then tied the string tightly around the umbilical cord to prevent the bird from stealing the baby’s soul. Naturally, the story ends with the former baby dying and the latter surviving. The villagers listened, then repeated the story through song and dance. The method worked. From that day on, villagers put the new method into practice. To date, 50 ingenious stories, each dealing with an unique aspect of health care, have been established. Medical missionaries work closely with the natives when developing the stories and insist the context must be kept simple, as true to tradition as possible, and materials used for health care must be easily attainable in their village. Dr. Waggy’s eyes twinkle as he related the success of the program. “Previous statistics are at best sketchy,” he admits, but reports show a 10 to 20 per cent decrease in the death.rate in the last eight years. The program’s success has been recognized by the African government and by several other countries who have begged for similar programs in their countries. Dr. Waggy will oversee an expansion of the program with 350 tribes which live within a 1,000 mile radius of Garkida. Becoming Part Os The Program Criteria for villages becoming part of the program is simple. Each village must support a male and a female health care worker for one year since Moslem tradition insists one can only treat his own sex. Because most tribes have their own dialect, the workers are required to have a second grade education in Hausa, the major trade language for the area. The villages must also supply a two-room hut with a table and chair. After a 12-week course, the health care workers return to their individual villages where a local committee proclaims a feast dav. The worker tells the

stories and the natives respond by repeating the stories in song, dance and play acting. Dr. Waggy will also advocate the program to the government, order supplies for the eight local dispensaries, diagnose and treat complex illnesses. Mrs. Waggy has always had an interest in helping people and for that reason obtained MSW and MDiv degrees. “I also have a MC degree,” she joked as she pointed to her nine-month-old daughter. “It stands for Mother of Crystal. ” The medical aspect is not the only thing that excites the Waggys about their African quest. One Nigerian church has a 2,000 membership with five daughter
Labor Day has religious conotations
By MARIETTA FULLER Labor Day comes on the first Monday in September and it became a national holiday in 1887. It is celebrated by parades, picnics and by a day of rest. According to the Bible, labor on this earth began when God cast Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden when they had sinned against God. In the Bible, the following persons worked in the glory of God: Having faith in God, Noah built an ark when he was told by God that there would be S flood. Noah worked 120 years on this ark thus making it possible that all life on this earth would not be destroyed. Moses led the grumbling Israelites through the wilderness fbr 40 years so that God’s promise to Abraham might be fulfilled — that of his seed being as the grains of sand and stars in the sky. God took David from his work as a shepherd boy to become king of Israel. His accomplishments in literary materials for the Bible were at their height in the 23rd Psalm, which is so widely used’ at funerals. Psalms sing forth praises to the glory of God!

congregations and is growing by several hundred each month. “There’s a Holy Spirit out there and fields are ripe,” Dr. Waggy said referring to the spiritual harvest of the people. The thought of coping with 115 degree temperatures in Garkida is a bit scary to the new missionaries, but Mrs. Waggy said, “We are going to Garkida partly on faith and partly on the knowledge that others have survived.” The Waggys were aware of their mutual interest in missions before they married and they forsee doing this type of work most of their F es.
Under the leadership of Nehemiah, God’s people rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, even though it was an almost impossible job, but it was said of the people doing this work that “they had the will to work” and the project was in “the will of God.” Today, we as laborers need to realize these facts. As she gleaned the fields, Ruth labored in love trying to support her mother-in-law, Naomi, and herself; Lydia was a Christian and a conscientious businesswoman who sqld her dyes to the glory of God; Dohjas served the Lord with her money and her needle by making garments for the poor and needy; and as a tent maker, Paul earned his way during the day and then preached the Gospel at night. Are you laboring to the glory of God? His command was to take the Gospel to all the world and many hungry souls are waiting to hear “The Story of Jesus.” We carry the message through the Word of God which is the Bible; so we need to read it daily so that we can labor in the vineyards of the Lord.
