IT’S A UNIQUE PROBLEM, one that probably isn’t unusual to football teams, but one which currently has head coach Myron Dickerson in a fix. Young, inexperienced and very thin, the Wawasee Warriors will be facing a great challenge each time they take to the gridiron this season. How to prepare these young men, who Dickerson said has been working extremely hard in practice this week, is the toughest task facing the fourth-year coach. The only way to gain experience in football is to “experience” the live contact. Theories, drills, and stragedy is all secondary to live contact. Nothing is better for a young player than to hit. But there’s a big problem with that. The more live contact a team take, greater is the chance for injury. “If we have too much scrimmage, you stand that possibility of injuring those people who are key to your success for the season,” said Dickerson. And the Warriors cannot afford injuries. “We just cannot afford any injuries this season,” he added. “The more times you hit, the more chance you’ll have of injuring your number one linebacker, your number one defensive end, and then we have to starting reaching in for young people.” —o—- — BIG KEY FOR the pre-season development will be this Friday’s soap scrimmage. Without a jamboree, and the North Wood Panthers greeting Wawasee the following Friday, this week’s scrimmage will be crucial in making a game-like atmosphere for coach Dickerson’s crew. The quarterback situation will be interesting, with rookies Steve Galegor and Brad Traviolia vying for the starting spot. Their performance in the scrimmage could go a long way in selecting the eventual starter this season. —o — THE MAIL-JOURNAL TRAVELING All Stars swing into action again tonight in a 6:30 rematch against Calvary United Methodist Church on Syracuse’s Vega Field.
