By DAVID W. WIDMOYER Hastings Island Chapel United Methodist Church Early in the Gospel of Saint John (Chapter 4:1-42) Jesus encounters a woman at the well in Sa inaria. Now ’Samaria was a troubled country which was opposed to the Jews of Jesus’ time and therefore, bands of Jews who traveled from Galilee to Jerusalem for worship were victimized. This was a dangerous and uncomfortable journey for Jesus and his disciples. About midday) Jesus sent his disciples into a nearby city to purchase food for the group. While they were gone, Jesus rested at the well and greeted a woman from Samaria who had come to the well to draw water. Usually women drew water at the evening hour; the fact that this woman came at noon signified she was rejected by others of the community arid came as an outcast to draw water in the solitude of the hour. Jesus asked her for a drink of water. She reminded him how unusual it was for a Jew to reChristian Women to hold meeting Milford Christian Women’s Fellowship will meet in Milford fire station hall August 13 at 9:30 a.m. The speaker, Ruth Hygema, is the past president of Warsaw Women’s Aglow and active in the Lay Witness movement.

quest a favor of a Samaritan woman. Jesus said, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” Jesus’ piercing evaluation made the woman uncomfortable and immediately she tried to divert his attention to theological matters. But Jesus pointed out that she had five husbands and the man she was then living with was not her husband. He said, “If you would receive the living water you would never thirst again,” or have need of anything else. Finally, she perceived that this man was the Messiah who had been sent to redeem her of her sins. She fled from Jacob’s well and returned to her city to tell all about the Messiah whom she had met and whom had told her “all that she had done.” Jesus meets aii of us at the well of life. Amidst our sins and shortcomings, Jesus evaluates our imperfections and searches our inner thoughts and actions. The woman at the well had many sins — so do we! It is not up to us to live a life without sin, but it is our destiny to admit our sins and receive Christ’s healing forgiveness. None of us stands so proud and tall that we cannot receive the refreshing and redeeming drink of “living water.” Comforted by our self-righteousness, each of us must be shocked to an awareness of our own sinfulness. We Christians believe in the

salvation of our Lord and the cleansing of our sins by his death on the cross. However, we are called to action by this cleansing of our spiritual bodies. The woman at the well returned to her city to tell others of the presence and power of Jesus the Christ; so we are challenged to do the same to our community! We have a gospel message given us by Jesus that enables us to go out into the world to save those who are lost in their sins. If we receive his gift but refuse to extend this ministry to others, we have failed our calling. The woman did not remain at the well, but became a missionary to her own people. We are called to do no less! The ministry of Jesus reaches out to the whole world. We are but one small part of that world. We receive his gift of living water but we are challenged to share this drink of water with everyone we meet. Every person can receive this drink, but only if we make it available to them. There are no prerequisites to this “new life.” Jesus himself supplies our only needs. We must claim the drink of “living water” by asking for it. We must also be willing to share this precious gift with those whom we meet along life’s way. We thank God for the simplicity of his salvation for all of us, and we thank him that we are called to perform the role of servant to those of our friends and neighbors who need to meet Jesus also!
