North beats South, 31-22 —

All-star day for Ross Dahlstrom

By GARY LEWIS Last Saturday’s 31-25 North win in the annual North-South AllStar football game may have been the final organized football game for Wawasee graduate Ross Dahlstrom. Dahlstrom, coach Myron Dickerson’s prized running back a year ago, played strong safety and started ona defensive squad which featured the best prep football stars in Indiana. Although he didn’t figure in any of the North’s scoring, he did play a part in North’s dominating defense which throttled the South the entire second half. The North held the South to 65 yards passing, 145 yards rushing, for a total of 210 yards in the game. “When I got down here, I just wanted to hold my own, and I did that,’’ a rain-soaked Dahlstrom said after the game. “I was pleased by everybody’s performance,” he added. Turning down several football scholarships from small colleges in Indiana, Dahlstrom was presumably going to tryout as a walk-on at Ball State University this month. But as of Saturday, Dahlstrom was undecided about his football future. “I still haven’t decided. The coach is supposed to get in touch with me,” Dahlstrom said. If coach Dwight Wallace was at the Butler Bowl Saturday, he surely must have noticed Dahlstrom who held his own at his position. Missing only two defensive series the entire contest, Dahlstrom was surprised to find himself as a starter when he reported to camp nine days earlier. “I came here thinking I wasn’t going to start, so I was surprised when I started.” One Os Two Others Dahlstrom joined two other local football stars — Concord’s Brant Kennedy, and Bruce Anglemyer of Goshen — on the North squad. Kennedy directed the first TD drive for the North on the team’s very first possession, completing four straight passes, before running the ball six yards for the touchdown. Kennedy was nearly brilliant the first time he touched the ball, completing a 16-yard pass under pressure for a first down followed by a six-yarder and a 24-yard pass to set up the scoring play. Anglemyer played tight end for the North, and was on the field on two of North’s scoring plays. Talented Company Dahlstrom was part of a talented backfield for the North, which included Fort Wayne Snider standout Rod Woodson. Woodson, who is headed to Purdue, returned a kickoff 92 yards in the wild first half for a score and made several good defensive plays. A record crowd of 10,500 fought th*' early afternoon heat and the late afternoon downpour at the Butler Bowl to see the contest, which was much more offensiveminded than most all-star contests. Dickerson, who took a van load of Warrior football players and coaches to the game, said he was glad to see it. “This is good for the game. That’s what people want to see, a lot of scoring,” he said. James Weaver, a star running back from Lafayette Jefferson High School, rushed for one touchdown and passed for another to lead the North’s offensive attack. After Kennedy’s debut on the first scoring drive, which ended on a failed extra point attempt, the South failed three times on its first possession and Runted. The North offense picked up where it had left off, picking up a quick first down and moving across the 50-yard line. But Kennedy’s pass attempt on first down was intercepted and

returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good, and the South led 7-6. The South lead was halted early when Woodson fielded the ensuing kickoff and ran away from the South 92 yards for the score. The extra point attempt failed again, and the North led 12-7. The South then mounted its first drive of the game from its 35. The drive took only eight plays and 65 yards, and ended with Austin rushing over from the one. A nifty, mis-direction, twopoint conversion, gave the South its last lead of the day, 15-12. North Took Control The North started to take control on offense in the second quarter with Purdue-bound Lafayette Jeff quarterback Doug Downing at the controls. The North drove 74 yards in nine plays to regain the lead 18-15,

after another unsuccesful PAT attempt. The North scored again when Fort Wayne Dwenger’s Dave Kinniry intercepted a pass and ran 20 yards to the South eight, and then ran the ball in on a running play on offense the very next play for a 24-15 lead. North’s twopoint conversion attempt failed. The South came roaring back with a 75-yard TD drive, capped by a two-yard plunge to make the score 24-22 North at the half. The Breaks “Everything started to come together and the breaks went our way (in the second half),” said Dahlstrom. “When we had a bad play, the defense would come back out and get the ball right back and move it down the field,” he said. The rain, which started to become heavy during halftime,

caused the game to become a bit sloppy. The North lost two fumbles and had one pass intercepted and the South lost two fumbles and had two passes intercepted. In the second half, the North had the final score in the fourth quarter when Weaver took a pitchout and than passed the ball to Elkhart Central’s Scott Eaton who scored. The PAT was finally converted by the North, giving the final margin of victory with 9:38 left in the game. Dahlstrom said he was pleased with his performance. “They didn’t run too many plays my way in the second half, but in the first half I had some pretty good hits,” he said. He said the experience was a positive one. And that it reminded him of something: “I think I’ll miss it if I do quit.”

The Swim Club this year compiled a perfect 5-0 record in dual meets, and finished second in the conference championship meet. According to Coach Tim Caldwell, over 25 club records were broken over the course of the summer.
