David Hudson, pastor of the Syracuse United Pentecostal Church, who had written in behalf of his congregation regarding the release of 16 Siberian Pentecostals fleeing from the Soviet Union, is happy to let the area people know these fellow Pentecostals are in the USA. The group of 16 arrived in Saint Louis on Tuesday, July 19. Members of two families from Chernogorst, a coal mining center in Siberia, landed at Lambert Field at about 10:30 p.m. As the immigrants walked through the arrival gate, they smiled shyly, and with tears, at the sight of the crowd of about 400 well-wishers who had turned out to greet them. They had left behind years of practicing their religion at secret meetings and years of battling with the Soviet bureaucracy to secure exit visas. Seven members of the group had burst into the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, in 1978, seeking help in their struggle to emigrate. They lived for nearly five years in the embassy basement. Maria Chmykhalov, 60, the mother of many in the group, said Tuesday with the help of an interpreter: “We thank everyone for their prayers and intercessions on our behalf. But we must not forget to pray for the other believers in Chernogorsk.”
