Area youth have opportunities to participate in Bible schools
Area youth who missed opportunities to participate in summer Vacation Bible School programs still have two chances to be involved in church studies. The Christian Church of Milford has scheduled its Bible school for August 15-19 for all children ages two through the sixth grade; and Calvary Baptist Church of Oswego has set its Bible school for August 8-12. “Walking With Jesus, He Cared, So Do I” is the theme for the Christian Church curriculum which will feature various learning centers and nightly dramatic presentations. For the learning centers, qualified resource people plain how people’s needs are met. The learning centers are modeled after Matthew 25:31-40. Mary Hensing, a nurse at the Indianapolis School for the Blind, will lead mission for the blind; Cindy Niles will lead mission for the deaf; Sam Winger, chaplain of the Allen County Jail, will lead

Spiritual and physical needs in building a church
By DR. GARY M. TUTTLE Rock Church I believe that many people today have a misunderstanding as to what the church is. There are many that view the church as a building in a certain location, with a certain name. Before we can discuss building a church, we need to know what we are speaking about. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word “kahal” is used to denote the congregation of God’s people or the community of Israel. In the New Testament, the Greek word “ekklesia” became the distinct word to describe the called out people of God. We can understand from these words that the church is not a physical building but a body of redeemed people. The church is a group of born again believers meeting together to worship God, to be trained in the ways of God’s kingdom, to minister to the world the good news of salvation. One could say that the church is truly the church when it is meeting. This would be a narrow use of the term. In the wider sense, the church is each individual believer in whom the Holy Spirit lives. Paul tells the Corinthian believers they are “God’s building... God’s temple.” The word building and temple denote a place of worship. There are a number of names for the church in the New Testament. The church is called a temple, family, body, army, city, vineyard, sheepfold, holy nation, holy priesthood and a chosen generation. The church is not a lifeless institution, but a living unit. It is an organism, not an

organization. It is a fellowship of all those who share the life of the Lord Jesus Christ and are one in His Spirit. Whai are the spiritual and physical needs in building the church as described? First the spiritual. Jesus says in Matthew 16:18, after Peter has confessed that Jesus is the Christ, “ ... on this rock I will build my church.” Jesus was not referring to the man Peter but to the confession that He, Jesus, is the Christ. The true church is built upon Jesus Christ, His death, burial and resurrection. The Word says there is no other name given by which men must be saved. Unless the Lord builds the house as the Scriptures say, “Its builders labor in vain.” Second there is the physical. We cannot separate the spiritual from the physical, there is a cooperation with the spiritual having the greater role. By the physical I mean people. The Bible makes it clear that the gospel is to be spread by people. Jesus said to his disciples, “Go and make disciples, baptizing them and teaching them.” Spreading the good news that Jesus saves is the purpose of Jesus filling each believer with His Spirit; “But you (all believers) will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be witnesses. . . ” The main purpose of the infilling of the Spirit is to make us effective witnesses for Jesus Christ. It takes Bible believing, committed, Spirit filled Christians to build the Church of Jesus Christ. I would like to close with these thoughts. Are you a member of Christ’s Church? Have you been saved? Are you committed to

ARTIST OF THE MONTH — The artist featured for the month of August at Calvary United Methodist Church is Betty Jean Deahl, who, along with her husband Robert, lives on Ogden Island, Lake Wawasee. Since her mother was a self-taught artist, she naturally became interested in the arts. Her first teacher, who gave her much encouragement and inspiration, was Arthur Sprunger, an art teacher in Goshen. Through the years Mrs. Deahl has studied with Harriet Montieth of Elkhart; Harold Zisla, Joseph Wrobel, Jim Borden and Ed Herrman, all of South Bend. She belongs to the Hoosier Art Salon, Saint Joseph Watercolor Society. Lakeland Art Association and Elkhart Art League. She has received many awards in shows sponsored by these organizations. She paints in both oil and watercolor but really prefers watercolor. Her favorite subjects are geraniums, glass and apples? The paintings may be seen at the church, which is located on SR 13, south of Syracuse.
