Sports Comment — Side Lines PREPARATIONS FOR the upcoming Wawasee font ha 11 season have already been made, with coach Myron Dickerson reporting good turnouts for the summer workout program Practice begins August 4, the earliest start in Indiana high school football history. And coach Dickerson has made his feelings known to the IHSAA on the subject. “They ’re making football a summer sport," the third-year coach replied in a conversation this week. “It really pits the pressure on the marginal football player, the kid who has to make a decision to turn down maybe SBOO to practice football,” he said. “A kid trying to work during the summer to make money to go to college is really going to have a lot to consider,” he added. Those are the players any football squad needs to have enough depth, because, after all, football is a numbers game MAKING THINGS EXTRA tough on Wawasee will be replacing 14 seniors, all of whom were regulars, from last year’s 5-5 squad. Those 14 seniors made for an experienced squad and that’s something Dickerson will not have a luxury of this season. Football is a sport which requires precise timing and welldrilled fundamentals. In 10 days, the Warriors must be prepared to face NLC-rival North Wood at home August 19. That would be a tough task for any squad, but for the inexperienced Warriors, it will be quite a challenge for coach Dickerson and his staff. THE QUARTERBACK situation for the Warriors will be one of prime importance. Two sophomores — Brad Traviolia and Steve Galegor — look to be the favorites to win the starting nod. Junior QB Brad Mitchell, who will not report to practice until mid-August, has experience with the JV team last season but figures to not be involved in at least the first two games. Both Traviolia and Galegor have impressed Dickerson with their football knowledge, but whoever wins the starting slot August 19 will be in there for the first time. At this point, the quarterback situation is one of many making predictions difficult for the 1983 Warriors. SIDE LINES WILL BE visiting the friendly confines of Wrigley Field this Sunday, to take in a contest between the Cubs and the San Diego Padres. The game itself will hardly be a meeting of powerhouses, with the Cubs remaining in the thick of the National League Eastern Division race only because of the failure of any other club to put it together so far this season, and the Padres currently sitting at 45-45, liv 2 games behind the front-running Atlanta Braves in the West. The purpose of Side Line’s excursion to the Windy City is primarily to obtain interviews with former Dodgers Steve Garvey and Ron Cey, now a Padre and Cub, respectively, and to renew acquaintances with an old friend of Side Lines, Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray.
Webster Youth League
In North Webster Girls Travel team games last week, Webster fell to Pierceton 6-4 and crushed Syracuse 34-2. Michelle Miller, Kelli Mitchell and Michelle Harter each homered in the Syracuse game, with Harter’s blast leaving the park. Jama Roose twice circled the basepaths on Syracuse errors. In Boys Minor League games last week, the Reds edged the Cubs 25-24 in 10 innings. Minh Tran and Jamie Conkling homered for the Reds. In another Minor League contest, the Mets topped the Reds 14-7 in a game that was close until the final innings Jason Mickley homered, while Chris Shidler and Noah Anderson doubled. In a Major League game, the Reds downed the Mets 4-2. In Girls Softball action, the Green Grapes downed the Yellow
Bananas 22-11, as Angie Richcreek, Michelle Katsanis, Jama Roose and Traci Long homered. Heidi Brower and Karri Henwood had triples.
