Young animals should be left alone
Each spring, local forest areas experience a rise in population as a wide variety of wild animals give birth to their young. Each year, a certain segment of these young animals are separated from their mothers by human beings, many with good intentions, and the lives of these animals are irrevocably altered, often with tragic results.

According to Lyle Enyeart, Kosciusko County Conservation Officer, the problem of humans adopting young wild animals is increasing with each passing year. “It’s definitely a problem,” Enyeart said. “People think the animals are cute, and they are. The problem is decreasing as we get further into the summer,
because the animals are getting bigger, but it seemed to be worse this spring than it had been before.” Enyeart said in many cases, humans will come upon one or more young animals, such as raccoons or deer, and assume that the animals have been abandoned by their mothers. In many cases, the mother is hiding nearby for her own protection, he said, or has bedded her young away from her for their own protection, as many young animals don’t yet possess the scent that can attract predators. “Occasionally there will be a justified case of taking the animal, such as if a mother deer has been hit by a car,” Enyeart said. “We (the county conservation officers) do want to be contacted in all instances. The chances of a person properly raising a animal are slim. We’d rather take it to someone who is qualified to bring it up.” Even if an individual does raise a wild animal to adulthood, state law requires it eventually be released in its natural habitat. “This applies to every animal,” Enyeart said. “It includes rabbits, squirrels and raccoons. ”

Enyeart said raccoons seem to be the most popular animals among local wildlife lovers. Ironically, they also present the greatest danger to human beings. “The raccoon can carry a parasite that can be contracted by a human being and prove to be fatal,” he said. “There have been several cases of this happening. That’s why I don’t take motherless raccoons home for my children to raise.” Other animals, like deer.-don’t pose many health problems, but close contact with humans may prove hazardous to the animal’s health, Enyeart said. “ People who tame a deer are making it hard on the animal because it won’t be afraid of humans,” he explained. “When deer season begins, this can be an advantage for the hunter.” Other animals that humans are prone to adopt are squirrels, rabbit, skunks and fox, Enyeart said. “The contact with squirrels is usually justified, because a tree has been taken down, or something of this nature,” he said. ““Occasionally we’ll have someone wanting to descent a skunk, or finding a young fox.” One wild animal that usually is

OF LIBRARIES - ■ <- ? - . Public Relations Whether you’re looking for a job in PR, or for PR ideas that might help your business or club, it may pay you to invest a few minutes in reading “Public Relations News,” a weekly newsletter now available at many libraries. M|P|O If you’re job hunting, think about sending a resume to the PR consulting firms that are listed in PR News as having recently acquired a major new account. New business often means new jobs. If you’re in charge of PR for a business or club, check the weekly case study in PR News. This is a two page report on a problem—and how public relations was used to solve it, Mrs. Denny Griswold, Editor of the newsletter, reports that although many libraries have her newsletter, others don’t, so it’s a good idea to call local libraries to ask before going. Any library can get a free copy of “Public Relations News,” by writing to Mrs. Griswold at 127 East 80th Street, New York, N.Y. 10021. Look, Ma! Scientists in Jewelry The use of jewelry worn in coming months should complement one’s outfit. Jewelry with active or sporty clothes should be simple and colorful. Great Britain are attempting to determine why this is so. “We’ve followed up a sort of Arab wives’ tale and found it to be true,” said Dr. Mary Dyson, ne of the research team. “‘Now we are trying to isolate the substance responsible, and if we do, it could be a tremendous medical breakthrough.” The Arabian Gulf catfish differs from his American counterpart in that he has poisonous spines.
