"A Conversation With..." Eric Beer: Grace gets one of WHS's best
NOTE: Winona Lake’s Grace College will have one of the best prep athletes at Wawasee High School when Eric Beer, a standout performer in baseball and football, reports to campus this faU. Beer plans to play baseball for the Lancers, after a successful career in both football and baseball. Mail-Journal sports reporter Gary Lewis talked with Beer recently about his carreer at WHS and his plans at Grace. LEWIS: Describe your athletic career at Wawasee High School. V BEER:I started high school hoping to be a big success in football. My freshman year, I got to play varsity toward the end of the season, and I thought things were going to work out really well. But then my sophomore year I hurt my knee, during my freshman summer I was playing basketball I came down on my knee and I tore my ligaments. I tried to get ready for my sophomore season in football, and in the first game of the season, against Warsaw, I hurt it again. I was out for the rest of the season. I thought pretty much then that everything was probably going to be over, but then during the summer, when coach Dickerson came, he kind of stressed the importance of making my knee better. It’s not going to get any better, I knew that, but it can get stronger. He really pushed me to make my knee strong, so I could play, and that’s what I did. I made up my mind that was what 1 was going to do, and for probably most of the entire summer my sophomore year, about everyday I would do leg ex-

ercises, and work it about as hard as I could to get ready for my junior year. In my junior year of football, I had a fairly decent year and I guess it was mainly because my knee was strong, I had a good year in baseball too. I thought it would be neat to make allconference, because it is quitea high honor, and in my junior year I was able to make all-conference in baseball. My senior year in football I did, and I did in baseball too. LEWIS: As you go on into college, how are you going to feel about the wins and the losses during you high school career. Will you forget them? BEER: I feel like that for three years I was on losing teams in high school. My senior year, kind of made up for all of it because we had a good year in football ... adequate anyway — we reached the top 10 at one time. We had a winning season in baseball, and up until my senior year I have been on losing teams. I’ll probably forget those losses, I think. The way my senior year went, that’s what I’ll remember the most. Not the heartbreaks I had up to my senior year. LEWIS: How prepared are you for college? BEER: During our junior year, Mrs. Curtis (WHS guidance director) scheduled several speakers to talk to classes about college. So she had us thinking about it. She encouraged us to look around at colleges, send applications in ahead of time which helped oDt a great deal...
That helped me to be encouraged to start looking for a college early, send my application in and get accepted, so then I could narrow it down and still have plenty of time to think about it during my senior year. LEWIS: Why did you choose Grace? BEER: I know I can go to Grace and learn probably as much at a state school somewhere else. But also, I’ll get the Christian side of education. I’ll have the chance to grow in the Lord, also, and that’s very important to me . . . First of all, I want to be able to develop that way and I can build the education along with it. At Grace College I know they do that. What are you going to study? I’m probably going to go in undecided, but I’m interested

quite a bit in psychology. I’ll probably take basic psychology courses first, and then I might be a major and break that off into some field. Because I know I can’t just go and take psychology and that’s it. I thought about counseling, and use it to break into some kind of other field. What about your athletic career? BEER: Well, I’m going to pursue it yet, in baseball. I think I have a better chance to get up higher in me ladder in baseball than I would in football. I don’t know if I’ll ever boa professional baseball player or anything like that, but I know I have a better chance to climb higher ... That’s mostly due to my size and my knee. I’m not sure if it could take another four years of football.

Air-dry The washing cycle of your dishwasher actually uses much less hot water — and therefore less energy — than washing dishes by hand. The drying cycle is the one that soaks up huge amounts of electricity. When the washing cycle is completed, save money by opening the door and letting the dishes air-dry. Brush-off Use an old toothbrush for cleaning off mold and dirt around the base of faucets and for cleaning the groove around your vanity sink.
