ILLINOIS 80618 A (312) 324-1000 J June 10, 1983 Mil M Dear Side Thank you for your appl-u ion for credentials to cover the 1983 “Golden Anniversary All-Star Gam it Coetistey Park July 6, 1983. A cumuttee ccoposed of Randy Minkoff, chai man of the Chicago chapter of the W •jibill Writers of Aearica, and myself, has juot ccnpleted screetong cover the upcoming All-St. i Game. Because we have the abilf.i' to acccsmodate only 500 media repreeantMivee, every application was nmH and weighed on the basis of the sin tod type of audience the sufcr J »r served, and the necessity of the eutouttor to be present at Qaniskej 4'urk to cover the events of the weak. 'M .. ~ * Charles A. Shriver . '■' J Public Relations < B ' ' - - SIDE LINES HAD H( ‘ED TO BE IN COMISKEY PARK in Chicago this evening, cove | ng major league baseball's 50th annual All Star game. However, th i« hopes crumbled a few days ago, when the above rejection letter slewed up at Side Line's desk. The criteria for select: |g who does and does not cover major events like the All Star gan | must be difficult for those in charge to determine; however, Side L |es was probably hampered, rather than helped, by its relative praxidiity to the Windy City. Recent newspaper articles concerning the num|' rof correspondents attending the game clearly showed that the gije's organizers were delighted to send passes to reporters from f; blications in far-off locations such as Alaska and Japan. It ’s a safe’ bet that had Side Lines had a return address in some exotic place lj | > Guam or Hong Kong, it too would have been taking in tonight's gan ; from.Comiskey’s press box. 1) SIDE LINES HAS TRIP j PLANNED for later in the summer to cover games at Chicago's Wigkqr. Field and Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium. A second letter fro: , the White Sox has invited Side Lines to attend any game of its choic > later in the season, but from this point on, Side Lines will think long < nd hard before accepting any invitation to Comiskey Park, or any ot.| r T American League stadium. Bigger doesn’t always aghn better, especially when it comes to publications, and it would wise for White Sox officials to avoid upsetting even the smallest j markets when it comes to promoting Chicago baseball. It needs at i the help it can get. Here's hoping that the National League eontir es its domination of the mid-season classic tonight, having won I of the last 20 All Star games. WORDS OF PRAISE n order for the organizers and officials of the sixth annual Mail-Jt mal Flotilla Run Independence Day morning. U / Nearly 200 runners par tcipated in the tworace event, which many said was a first-class >peration. The 3.3 mile winner, Jerry Williams, Jr., said the FlotilH Run was “the best organized I’ve ever been to,” during the tradition <1 post-race press conference. Organizer Carl Meditch c j serves a pat on the back for another job well-done, as does the found : of the event, Ron Baumgartner, vice president of The Papers Inc< j mated. Community leaders like Dale Brannock, Jerry Minton, Nancy Glon, Dave Baumgartner anc | there — including several Mail-Journal employees — helped make tl j Flotilla Run a success.
