Thomas Smith, president of the Warsaw-based flrm, which has received national attention in recent montiis in connection with the construction of a mini-mall in Warsaw’s Boice building, confirmed that a construction project on some type in Milford is currently being considered. “We’re working on something, but it’s toe early to go into any details,’’ Smith said. Smith saiid that the Milford property was one of several sites being considered for the project, and added that what his firm had in mind “would be a big asset for Milford.** Smith said he would be able to say more about the proposed construction, which he said would mean more jobs and increased tax base for Milford, in a few weeks. A CHICAGO police officer, who spends his off-duty week ends at his Dewart Lake cottage, was on the sidelines of the Leesburg Ses- • quicentennial Parade Saturday afternoon taking photos with his zoom lens. His comments were interesting, noting that such a small community could put on such a wholesome parade. He said if the parade was held in Chicago his department would have plain clothes police offiers among the crowd watching for pick-pockets. A NUMBER of Our Town’s residents were spotted at the Fourth of July fireworks Monday night at the Syracuse Lakeside Park with several questioning why Milford has no fireworks to celebrate the birthday of the nation? A good question. This might deserve some looking into in the future. DENNIS LECHLITNER is currently in Athens, Ga., working in Chore-Time’s plant there for the summer.

AT GETTYSBURG, Pa., on July 1, 1963, began a three-day struggle that ended General Robert E. Lee’s last chance to force Washington to agree to independence for the South. General Lee, perhaps the preeminent strategist to emerge from the war, and admired on both sides (he had freed his slaves before the war and like many southerners fought the war because he believed states had a right to secede from the Union), had invaded Union territory once before, in 1862, But in a bloody battle at Antietam, Md., the result of the capture of General Lee’s campaign plans by enterprising Union soldiers, Lee had been turned back. Since the US Navy commanded the seas, and its blockade was slowly starving the South, the Confederacy’s chance was to strike hard enough to persuade the North to agree to independence for the 11 southern states. (Linclon had prevented Maryland from seceding only through the arrest of members of that state’s legislature.) Gathering 73,000 men (President Jefferson Davis refused him two more divisions then stationed in the Carolinas which Lee said would mean success), Lee started north in June of 1863. He had just won one of his greatest victories at ChanCellorsville. But there, too, he lost the brilliant Stonewall Jackson. At first he planned to cross the Susquehanna at Harrisburg, and march on Philadelphia.

The event will probably be held in early fall, she said., Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas. The institution opened its doors to the public in 1962 to combat catastrophic diseases which afflict our children. Saint Jude Hospital is non-sectarian, nondiscriminatory, and provides total medical care to over 4,200 patients. At Saint Jude, scientists and physicians are working side by side seeking not only a better means of treatment, but also the causes, cures and prevention of these terrible killers. All findings and information gained at the hospital are shared freely with doctors and hospitals all over the world. Thanks to Saint Jude’s, children who have leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, sickle cell anemia and other child killing diseases now have a better chance to live. This year’s Bike-a-Thon will be dedicated to “Terry.” Terry was diagnosed with leukemia in March of 1978, and began treatment at Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Today, she is well and off all medication. Terry is an example of the progress and success of the research, patient care, and educational programs of this internationally recognized hospital. County jail booking A number of area residents were booked in the Kosciusko County Jail recently. Those booked were: Johnie Ray Dove, 26, Leesburg, for burglary and theft. Mark Steven Hampton, 23, Cromwell, for driving with a suspended license. Bruce Wayne Huff, 26,419 East Boston St., Syracuse, for failure to appear for a hearing. He was held on $2,000 bond. Anthony William Shear, 23, 72833 CR 29 Syracuse, on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement. Jeffrey Lee Antrim, 28, 302 Sixth St., Winona Lake, was booked on a charge of theft. The charges stem from the theft of a cassette tape player, valued at $l5O, from a van owned by Raul Zarte, r 1 Milford. The theft occurred while Zarte’s van was parked west of Smith Tire<at SR 15 and CR 200N, near Warsaw. Fence damaged A farm fence owned by Bertha Gilbert, r 1 Milford, was damaged in a one-vehicle accident Wednesday, June 29, at 7:45 a m. The accident occurred onCRIIOON. Charles R. Westerman, 35, Shamrock Trailer Court, Nappanee, was the driver of the truck which struck the!* fence. No damage amounts were available.
