Never a dull moment in '/Han of La Mancha'

By BILL SPURGEON Stark, somber scenes of Spain during the Inquisition are being vividly re-created in the Enchanted Hills Playhouse production of “Man of La Mancha," the theatre’s second 1983 offering. This reviewer is convinced that the people who presented the first version of this musical play about Don Miguel de Cervantes/Don Quixote, nearly two decades ago in the refurbished historic Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn., would be pleased with what is being done with the show in 1983 in Kosciusko County, Indiana. The production effectively conveys the gentle delusion of the knight errant created by Cervantes, whose mission was to “add a measure of grace to the world,” a world that was anything buy graceful and gentle. Alan Alderson is an incredibly credible Don Quixote/Cervantes

at Enchanted Hills. Coming here from Indianapolis, where he had experience with the Indianapolis Civic Theatre, and Bloomington, where he has studied vocal performance at Indiana University, Mr. Alderson is patently at home as the Man of La Mancha. There is never a dull minute in this play, from the time Cervantes descends the staircase into the dungeon and soon after gets permission to stage “an entertainment” to justify his acquittal in a mock trial staged by fellow prisoners and jail personnel, until the time he is summoned back upstairs to face the court of the actual inquisition. Mr. Alderson is in total control and it is his show for every minute, despite remarkably effective performances by Gregory Franklin as Sancho Panza and Darlene Williams as Aldonza. Rich Munger’s governor/inkeeper assignment is well handled, as is Randy Colborn’s part as the Duke and Carrasco.

But the show belongs to Mr. Alderson, and to Miss Williams and Mr. Franklin as they play to his Don Quixote, and it works beyond a doubt. This is Enchanted Hills Artistic Director Jeffrey Koep’s first show of this season, and it will be a tough one to top. He has successfully insisted on split-second pacing, a set that taxes to the hilt the limited stage and backstage space at the barn east of Wawasee, and he has in-

sisted on lighting and music and acting by others in the cast to complelent that of the leading players. The result is a taut production, and one that moves remarkably fast. When this reviewer was in the audience last Friday night, an electrical storm was stalled over the area, but its distraction was minimized by the quality of what was being presented on stage. “Man of La Mancha” is a somber vehicle, to be sure, and

seme of the activities on stage are fairly shocking, but it was surprising to be sitting in an audience that did not visibly react to the excellence of the show. Also, we cannot, for the life of us, figure out why anyone, knowing anything at all about the play and its complexity, or even reading the EHP literature on it, would show up with a small infant, but sure enough, someone in the audience did, and its bawling through the final 15 minutes of the show, while it did not visibly

The purpose of the camp is to allow campers to enjoy as many of the “normal” camping activities as possible, Miss Devereaux said. We can recommend the “Man of La Mancha” production at Enchanted Hills as certainly a landmark one for the theatre’s present management and personnel, and as an evening very well-spent if you admire theatrical excellence. Productions continue through Sunday, at 8 tonight, Thursday and Friday; 8:30 Saturday; and 7:30 Sunday.
