Sports Comment — Side Lines THE BIG QUESTION for Mike Kissinger, representing coach Dale Brannock’s Lady Warriors basketball program, in this week end’s Tournament of Knights competition will be his age. Entering the tournament at the advanced age of 22, Kissinger will be competing against athletes several years his junior as he attempts to defend his crown. Kissinger was the crowd favorite a year ago, as the hometown product demonstrated his versatility in amassing important points during the various athletic events. Entering the tournament on a whim, Kissinger relied on his less-than-brilliant athletic career at Wawasee to stay in the running and eventually win the competition. The 11th man on a 12-man basketball roster in his prep days, and a trackster, Kissinger was characteristically modest following his victory last year, telling the press his win was “no big deal. ” But it was a big deal, both for the Wawasee Girls’ Basketball program, which collected SSOO as the Barbee native’s sponsor, and for the Tournament of Knights program itself, which gained additional community attention due to a victory by a local resident. . MAKING THINGS DIFFICULT for Kissinger to retaijx his title will be two of coach John Wysong’s basketball stars, Kevin Smith and Brian Walls. Smith, a versatile three-sport athlete, will probably be able to use his skills as a tennis player and baseball star. Side Lines will probably be pulling for the sentimental favorite, the aging Kissinger, and also would like to see outstanding performances from both Walls and Smith, as well as Jeff Long, another Wawasee grad entered in the competition. But if a legitimate pick is to be made as to the winner of the event, Side Lines will have to go with Jim Heck, an outstanding Kokomo athlete who appears to have all the skills to do well in a number of the tournament’s activities. THE NEWS ANCHORMAN at a South Bend television station was defending the performance of the Chicago Cubs in a recent series with the Mets to the sports anchor Wednesday night when he displayed an unique mathematics philosophy “They (the Cubs) won two out of three games,” explained the television newsman. “That’s three-fourths of the loaf, isn’t it?” WAWASEE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR HAL TRAVIOLIA is home recovering from surgery following a serious heel injury as the result of a fall from a ladder while hanging banners in the high school’s new gymnasium two weeks ago. In a conversation with Side Lines, Traviolia said he was “getting there” in/terms of a full recovery, and said the pain from the injury was beginning to subside. Traviolia said he deeply appreciated the many calls and letters his family had received following the accident. As for the banners themselves, Trav said, “It’s going to be a while before they get hung.” SIDE LINES HAS LEARNED THAT M-J sports correspondent Gary Lewis, who has dedicated much of his free time in the last month to organizing an unofficial Mail-Journal softball team, is running into trouble with a project of his. He planned to schedule employees of The M-J in a softball contest with area industrial squads on a weekly basis. Conflicts over whether non-company teams are allowed on industrial diamonds have thrown this proposed series into limbo, however, and Lewis has been left with a much-practiced and talented softball team that has no one to play. Any area teams with the courage to take on this awesofhe collection of softball talent in one or more exhibition contests should contact Lewis to set up a time and place.

Warsaw Freshman High School girls’ physical education teacher. The Warsaw school board could approve her hiring at its next meeting on July 11.
