" A conversation with . . Dave Baumgartner: Opts for new career

NOTE: David Baumgartner. Wawasee teacher and assistant football and wrestling coach, last week resigned from his position at the high school to begin a new career. Mail-Journal sportswriter Doug Walker interviewed Baumgartner about his decision to leave teaching, and his four years at Wawasee. WALKER: Why the decision to leave coaching and teaching? BAUMGARTNER: Obviously, the first attraction (of the new job) was that I’m still involved with education, still working with young people, and still have an opportunity to affect young people’s lives by offering them a chance to further their education. The benefits, the salary, the chance for career advancement ... they all were big considerations. WALKER: What precisely will be your responsibilities with the Bell & Howell Educational Group? BAUMGARTNER: My basic job is to contact students who are interested in careers in electronic technology and computer science who have expressed their interest by sending us cards and letters, go to their homes and present to them and their parents the programs that the DeVry Institute offers. If they want to further pursue that, we’ll see that they’re admitted to DeVry. During the school year, I go on a lecture circuit of the 60 different schools in my territory. WALKER: What will you miss the most about teaching? BAUMGARTNER: In teaching three years at Wawasee and one year at Syracuse Junior High, I got to know the group of kids, the faculty and the staff here at the high school, and I’ll miss the comradery I’ve had with them. They’re outstanding people. I’ll miss the coaching aspect of it, also. WALKER: Did you observe any major changes during your three years at Wawasee?

LEAVING WAWASEE — Wawasee High School teacher and coach Dave Baumgartner recently decided to leave his position at the high school and go into a new career. BAUMGARTNER: Not many drastic changes. Here recently, I’ve noticed a fresh approach with Dr. Hull coming in. The faculty is becoming more creative and exploring different avenues in education. I’ve seen a subtle change, but a refreshing change. WALKER: Is there anything about teaching that you won’t especially miss? BAUMGARTNER: I’m not going to miss the paper work involved in the daily routine of grading and things of this nature. Having a little more time to do things for my benefit is something that is going to be advantageous to me. WALKER: Would you consider returning to teaching at some point in the future? BAUMGARTNER: I don’t close that door at all. I want to leave that open so that I possibly can get back into teaching if in fact this career is not exactly what I expect it to be. WALKER: How long did it take you to make the decision to change careers?

BAUMGARTNER: Actually, I was made aware of this job opportunity about a year and a half ago. The last six or seven weeks, I was involved in the interviewing process, talking to some people about the possibility of a career change, counseling with people like Dr. Hull and Coach Dickerson and getting their opinions on the pluses and minuses, and then finally coming to a decision. WALKER: What are your final impressions of Wawasee as you leave for the last time? BAUMGARTNER: A part of me is very sad to leave Wawasee, because I developed what I thought was a good rapport with the staff, the faculty and the kids. They became very much a part of me, and I’ll miss that aspect of it. I like Wawasee High School, and I liked the people and kids I worked around. I’m not leaving the area, which is good, because I’ll always be able to keep an eye on the high school and keep up on what’s happening here.

Hanson named new football coach

Head football coach Myron Dickerson has announced former Wawasee football assistant Rob Hanson as the new assistant football coach. Hanson coached at Wawasee for Dickerson during the 1981 football campaign. Hanson replaces Dave Baumgartner, who served as offensive line coach, and will be responsible for the defensive down linemen. Assistant coach Kim Lobsiger, defensive coach last season, will now be responsible for the offensive line. Jim Jones will remain as coach for the defensive backs. Both Jones and Lobsiger were new to the staff last season. Hanson’s appointment is pending school board approval next month. Hanson is a graduate of Goshen High School and Ball State University where he participated in football. He left Wawasee to take a part-time assistant’s position at Western Michigan University.

Named to the first team were catcher Eric Beer (who was also on the team last season), who hit .380 and tied for the conference lead with seven runs batted in despite being sidelined a portion of the season with injuries; and infielder Kevin Smith, who led the team with a .400 batting average and shared the runs batted in crown with seven. On the All-Conference second team were Warriors Brian Henson, who was second in the conference in strikeouts, and infielder Tony Blackburn. Other NLC standouts to be named to the squad included pitchers Todd Samuelson and Brian Smith of Plymouth, Mike White of Warsaw and Kurt Hand Os North Wood. Infielders joining Smith on the team were Jay Huff of North Wood, Mickey Gardener of Bremen and Tim Thul of Goshen. Outfielders selected included Dave England of Plymouth, Mike Wagoner of North Wood, and Warsaw’s Russ Menzie and Keith Cummings. Bremen catcher Mike Phillips was also chosen.

ROB WF HANSON * Hanson will serve as driver’s education instructor at the high school. Dickerson said Hanson’s job assignment was made “where we can function the best.” “1 don’t believe in all of that specialty stuff. We no longer have a straight platoon system anymore, so all my coaches will have to help out everywhere. I try to put coaches where they will be the best utilized,” said Dickerson. Hanson’s acceptance greatly pleased Dickerson, who admitted his young players will need someone familiar with the system. “He’s been there two seasons ago, so it is a lot better than having someone new coming in,” Dickerson said. “Rob is a very hard worker. The three of them will work together fine,” he added. Dickerson’s philosophy about his assistants is teamwork rather than individual responsiblity. “We’ll have three individuals in the same capacity at different jobs,” he said. “Hanson is a super-hard worker who wants to be a football coach. In 1981, Wawasee finished with a 3-7 mark, scoring 43 points while allowing 121. Last season, the football Warriors finished with a 5-5 mark, scoring 163 points while allowing only 85. Hanson is expected to arrive in the Syracuse area July 6.

SON OF THE GREAT JIM THORPE — John Thorpe, son of the late great Jim Thorpe, will be in the Mermaid Festival parade this Saturday and is the featured guest during a luncheon at the Classic Restaurant this Friday. He is chief of the Sac and Fox Indian tribe.

Thorpe named as special parade guest

John Thorpe, one of seven children of the late great Jim Thorpe, will be the grand marshal of the 38th annual Mermaid Festival parade in North Webster this Saturday. The principal chief of the Sax and Fox Indian tribe, John Thorpe will be honored at a luncheon to be held at 1 p.m. this Friday at the Classic Restaurant in North Webster. He will be the honored guest speaker and will attend in headress and ceremonial garb of his Sac and Fox tribe. Thorpe’s arrival will serve as a replacement for this year’s King of Sports, Hoosier golfer Fuzzy Zoeller, who is not expected to attend his coronation ceremony. Zoeller may participate in another ceremony later this year. Jim Thorpe was gold medalist of the decathlon and pentathlan

event in the 1912 Olympic games at Stockholm. Called the “greatest athlete in the world," by Stockholm's King Gustave, Thorpe was stripped of his title by the AAU and the Olympic committee for playing minor league baseball. Recently, the Thorpe medals were restored to his family after decades of family pleas and public outcry. When the International Palace of Sports was dedicated in 1974. local artist “Dutch” Mullett created a larger than life statue of Thorpe which is located at the museum’s entrance, near the Fountain of Fame. The luncheon is open to the public on a first come bases. Reservations can be made by contacting the Palace of Sports at 834-7060.
