Local groves national home of controversial Brethren Church split
By GAIL WIDMOYER “This is a labor of love,” commented Dorothea Kerlin, member of the Milford First Brethren Church who has nearly completed a history of the Milford-based church. According to Mrs. Kerlin, roots of The Brethren Church can be found in Milford. “Our church was one of the very first churches organized after this trouble,” she commented. The trouble she refers to centered around Henry R. Holsinger in 1882. “Trouble had been brewing for several years, commented the church historian. Ac-

Mrs. Kenneth (Sara) Greenwood entertained the Milford United Methodist Women in the parsonage at a spring luncheon on Thursday afternoon, June 16. Edith Baumgartner, Nancy Newcomer and Caroline Wilson served as co-hostesses. Following the luncheon, Millie Schermerhorn, Kendallville, presented a slide program to the group on the work being done at the Lucille Raines Residence in Indianapolis. The center helps women in crises, alcoholics and drug abusers and is fully funded by the UMW of Indiana. Mrs. Schermerhorn is a member of the board of directors for the residence. The Milford unit president, Mary Duncan, announced that the women of the church will be in charge of the worship service on Sunday, June 26, with Evelyn Shafter of Columbia City as speaker for the service. cording to Mrs. Kerlin’s research, Holsinger was the primary initiator of progressive thought and views. Prior to 1882, the Church of the Brethren evolved from the Old German Baptist Church and enforced manmade rules for dress, hair styles and head coverings. They also believed formal education was not necessary for church ministers. Then Holsinger began publishing a weekly newsletter called the “Progressive Christian” which advocated the progressive mode of thought. Through this literature, he

criticised traditional church practices and caused members of the Church of the Brethren to gather for “perhaps the largest assembly of members that ever met in America,” Mrs. Kerlin quoted one of her sources. Meet Near Milford Because of his controversial acts, Holsinger was suspended from the church and his final trial was held at Arnold’s Grove which is thought to be north and west of the intersection of US 6 and SR 15. At the Arnold Grove Meeting, the crowd accepted the report against Holsinger and he was expelled from the church. Mrs. Kerlin discovered in her research that “only a few” members stood up with Holsinger and together they formed the Progressive Church. For the first five years following the Arnold Grove Meeting, Holsinger and his members met under the Progressive Brethren Church. Then in 1888, the group changed its name to The Brethren Church and kept this name through the present. Another Split Prior to 1939, there was dissention over theological interpretations. Hus disagreement led to a split in The Brethren Church which produced the Grace Brethren Church of Winona Lake while The Brethren Church retained its headquarters in Ashland, Ohio. Since their first meeting, members of The Brethren Church have adopted “The Bible, the whole Bible and nothing but the Bible” as their church motto and guidelines to living. Locally, the Milford First Brethren Church, then known as the Progressive Brethren Church, first organized in 1883 while the present structure was constructed by the fall of 1886 for $3,760. Within the next six weeks, area residents will witness another growth spurt from the First Brethren Church as the new church education/fellowship center located at the site of the old C.S. Myers Ford garage begins to rise. Once completed, the new structure will house an educational center, fellowship hall, church offices, shower facilities for the existing gymnasium, kitchen facilities, classrooms, lounge and auditorium. While watching erections of the new structure, Rev. Paul Tinkel and Mrs. Kerlin will complete work on the history of their church for publication in celebration of the church’s 100th anniversary scheduled for the month of October.

Relevance of the Lord's Prayer
By PAUL F. SHRIDER North Webster Church Os The Brethren The most recited prayer of the Christian faith is the one we call “The Lord’s Prayer.” At times, it is prayed with deep feeling and at others recited with such force of habit that if one is interrupted in the middle of the recitation, he must go back to the beginning and start all over again. Jesus gave it some 2,000 years ago in response to needs then. How relevant is it to our needs and our faith today? Is it just a good luck charm to which we Christians cling, or does it serve some real purpose? Let us go to the prayer and its setting for the answers to these questions. Observe first that it makes no difference whether it comes from the request of a disciple for a prayer like John the Baptist or any other religious leader of that day required of their followers, as in Luke 11, or in the midst of the Sermon on the Mount as in Matthew 6. However, Matthew 6:5-8 gives us most clearly Jesus’ philosophy of prayer that we need to understand. The back drop is that every devout Jew observed the fixed times of prayer each day. The workman would lay (town his tools, the rider would alight from his donkey, the teacher would suspend his lectures and say his prayers. The ostentatious were careful to be caught in a public place and to remain longer praying than anyone else. However, as always, there were some sincere people inquiring as to the proper manner to approach God through prayer. Observe verse 5. Don’t pray For Those In Dire Circumstances: And we know that all things work together lor good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ■

like hypocrites to be seen praying in synagogues and on street corners. They want to appear religious and they get their reward of apearing religious. Verse 6 requests that prayers be in secret, and the reward will then come from the God who knows the secret and inner recesses of our beings. Verse 7 points out that the length of a prayer or the number of times it is repeated is no substitute for earnestness. Verse 8 affirms that God already knows our need before we ask, and thus the purpose of prayer is to communicate with God as a child communicates with his parents. Verse 9 and following is the model prayer proper. It begins with an invocation, “Our Father who art in heaven” and is followed by a series of petitions. Three are for God’s cause: 1. “Hollowed be Thy name” — that God might be rightly worshipped; 2. “Thy kingdom come” —a prayer for peace and unity; 3. “Thy will be done” — is asking for grace to conform to God’s will. There are then four petitions for human need: 1. “Give us this day our daily breat” — requesting food, clothing, shelter, not luxury; 2. “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” — to forgive our enemy is the act of a Christian, and we must act as one to be accepted as one; 3. “Lead us not into temptation” — help us to find away around the evils, trials and sorrows of life; 4. “Deliver us from evil” — deliver us from sin, wickedness and everlasting death. The doxology, “For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen,” was not in the original text and was probably added by a devout man in the first century church. It does provide additional praise for God and in no manner distracts from the original intent of the prayer. '' Some of us would say it gives a bit of finishing touch. - The j*rayer*s Purpose In the light of Jesus’ introducT —

tory remarks, the intent was not that this prayer would be recited again with no feeling of emotion or personal involvement. Neither is it intended to be a good luck charm. Saying the same prayer over and over again in the same words and tone must surely be as aggravating to God as when we are pestered in a similar manner. Acts of prayer must be as fresh as acts of expressing love. •However, we need to give credit to those times when the situation is so grave or sacred that these are the only words that can come from the depths of our being. They then become an integral part of our personal worship. In so far as we are in as much need of an example of prayer as were the disciples, the Lord’s Prayer is still valid today. It is an example of the sincerity, freshness, devotion and spontaneity that needs to be incorporated in every prayer. We are moved with the sincerity and simplicity of a child who cuddles up to a parent at the end of the day and bursts forth, “I love you daddy. You are the best daddy anyone could ever have. I want to be like you when I grow up. And I want to be good because you want me to be good.” After a pause he may say, “I broke a shoe lace today. Maybe we can get another when we go to the store the next time.” Perhaps he then launches into the experiences of the day and ends by saying, “Thank you for teaching me how to bat a ball. You can do anything. Thank you, daddy, thank you. Thank you.” The above incident may be a bit overly simplified, but this is the kind of fresh, open and sincere communication Jesus elicits between a person and his God. Prayer is not an attempt to make God conform to our desires, but it is a time for the children of God to participate in the give and take of communicating with God. The Lord’s Prayer is most valid when it is used as a model of that kind of communication. “...Lord, teach us how to pray.” “When you pray say, ‘Our Father...’ ”

Input — output
By MARIETTA FULLER Whatever business data is needed, it is put into a computer by cards, tapes, or discs. This process is called “input.” Out comes such things as labels, ledgers, checks, invoices, accounts payable and this is called “output.” What we put into our minds will determine what comes out of us. This should be a caution to not input bad things into\our minds. A computer machine, cutting dowfr work time, with an unbelievable storage capacity, and it is amazing what it can do even to matching up desirable mates in marriage. Bearing information on activities, likes and dislikes, a data processing card can be fed into the programmed machine and out will come a card or cards of potential suitable mates; but remember that the computer is a cold and non-compassionate machine and that only God can make a successful marriage. Pray to God for help. In Dr. Jack Van Impe’s “Perhaps Today.” Dr. Emil Family night at UM before picnic The monthly family night at the Milford United Methodist Church will be held this Sunday, June 26, with afternoon swimming and games before the carry-in picnic. Gaverluk says, “You and 1 are in the computers in Brussels, and those computers are waiting for this super dictator (Antichrist) to arise, who is going to head up those 10 nations of Europe. Every member of an industrialized nation, if he carries a driver’s license or if he has a credit card is already in those computers. All the Antichrist will have to do is to say to some of his men, ’Go down and have the computer knock out all the cards of the people in that community who had a negative reaction to my speech.’ All those cards come out and he’s got the addresses of every one of them. ” However, believers in Christ need not worry about this for God promised us in Revelation 3:10 that we would not go through the awful tribulation period. So, the main thing is to input the knowledge that all are sinners and to output the words, “God be merciful to me a sinner” and save me from the wages of sin which is death and give to me everlasting life through Thy Son. Grace plans sesquicentennial events, film Grace Brethren Church, on the corner of Pearl and Church Streets in Leesburg, is sponsoring many activities during the Leesburg Sesquicentennial celebration June 26 through July 2.
