By MICHAEL E. JOHNSON Syracuse Church of God The Beatitudes are relevant for today because of the timeless truths they reveal for living a “blessed” or “happy” life. Not only do they emphasize the ethical demands of living a Christian life, they also ring forth with hope and promise of blessings both for the present and for the future. Beatitudes are found both in the Old and New Testaments, but the ones most commonly identified with are those spoken by Christ at the beginning of His Sermon on the Mount. They are recorded in the book of Matthew 5:3-12. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their's is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for their's is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. (KJV) Here are the qualities that should characterize the disciple of Christ. Contrary to worldly standards, here are people who are blessedgot by the abundance of what they possess of this world’s fortunes, but rather by what they lack of them. Their happiness comes from Christ who “came into the world to bless US.” Acts 3:26 It was Christ who said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit. , .” Happy are those people who are humble. They recognize the greatness of God; His unlimited love and unending mercy, Their hope is in

the riches of His grace and not in their own merits or abilities. God looks graciously upon them, “.. .for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” “Blessed are they that mourn. <.” This does not sound likely to the common way of thinking. Mourning calls forth thoughts of sorrow and grief, and it’s hard to consider that “blessed,” even though it may be an avenue of God’s grace. However, the mourning done due to sin, and the mourning that accompanies repentance, truly does bring people the blessed, happy knowledge that through Christ, “they shall be comforted.” “Blessed are the meek,..” Happy are those who quietly submit themselves to God. Those who seek no personal glory or earthly acclaim. Those who can keep their cool while others are prone to boil over. Their patience and courage makes it possible for them to forgive where others would rather take revenge. “They shall inherit the earth.” “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness...” The righteousness they pursue is the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Their desire is to be like Him, leading a life that is free from sin and giving glory to God the Father. They are motivated to live a life that is better, and truer, than that which they now have. Their happiness and hope lies in the fact that “they shall be filled.” “Blessed are the merciful...” Luke writing the book of Acts (20:35) said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” So it is with those who are merciful. Their happiness outweighs even the happiness of those who they bless with their kindness. As they share their compassion and good works, the light of God illuminates their surroundings and reflects back upon them, “for they (too) shall obtain mercy.” “Blessed are the pure in heart. ..” They have been washed and cleansed by the forgiveness and shed blood of Christ. The sins which had so muddied the waters of life have been removed. The guilt which had stagnated their spiritual

growth is gone. Due to these purifying changes their perception is cleared and “they shall see God.” ‘‘Blessed are the peacemakers. ..” They are happy because they are involved in changing turmoil into calm, anger into tranquility, hate into love. They spread and share in the blessings of a life lived with sanity and compassion. They are co-workers with Christ, and because of their labors, “they shall be called the children of God.” “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake. . .” This is probably the greatest paradox of all the Beatitudes. The evil of the persecutions is indicated in the following verse which points out that “men shall revile you ...and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.” The key to understanding this paradox is in grasping the fact that they are persecuted for righteousness sake, for doing that which is good. To suffer for committing a crime is only just, but to suffer for living a godly life carries with it a blessing, a happiness which born of the promise of eternal rewards. To those who are so mocked and persecuted Jesus said, “Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” The importance of the Beatitudes will never fade, for man will always need to know the truth. The truth that people everywhere can be certain of a future of happiness and joy, no matter what this world may bring them in the present. The Beatitudes will always shine as beacons of light guiding all who will follow to God’s kingdom and love.

services at 7:30 p.m. Lights out at 11 p.m. During the camp the youth are entertained by different groups of entertainers from other states. Many arts and crafts are also taken in to teach the young people. Everyone attending camp is given a certificate. On Friday, of each week, there are 10 youths chosen as the best outstanding camper of the week. From this 10 (five girls and five boys) there are one boy and one girl who then received the President’s Award. These people are picked by their participation, leadership spiritual and all around attitude for the week. Rev. Hudson said if any of his young people from the Syracuse Church makes this 10 best list, they get their name engraved and placed on a plaque which hanges in the church foyer. Camp for the United Pentecostal Church started on Monday, June 13, and runs through August 5.
