While many events of the Mermaid Festival do not get underway until Monday, June 20, the town of North Webster will be a busy place this coming week end. Merchants will have special sales all day on Saturday, June 18. At 8 a.m. Saturday a men’s softball tourney will begin on the school field. At 8:30 a.m. the annual Mermaid Festival 5.000 Meter Run registration begins with the run beginning at 10 a.m. in front of the International Palace of Sports.

Also at 10:30, the North Webster and Mid-Lakes Lions Clubs will hold a chicken barbecue in front of Camelot Hall. The weigh-in for the garden tractor pull, sponsored by the Indiana Tractor Pullers Association will begin at 12 noon with the pull at 1 p.m. The International Palace of Sports w ill open at 12 noon and be open until 10 p.m. The girls’ Youth League tournament will begin north of the fairgrounds at 6 p.m.
And, the annual Mermaid Ball will be held at Camelot Hall from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. with Ron Frazier and Bridge. Sunday Events Father’s Day will also be a special day at North Webster with the men’s softball tourney continuing at the school field at 8 a.m. The Palace of Sports will be open from 12 noon until 5 p.m. The annual firemen’s and ladies’ waterball contest will be held on the fairgrounds at 2 p.m. and the girls’ Youth League tourney will continue at 6 p.m.

North Webster; Fort Wayne Street Rod Association, Fort Wayne; Goshen Appreciation night at raceway Nappanee Raceway will hold an appreciation night and benefit for Louie Gochenor, Bourbon, on Saturday. June 18. from 4-6 p.m. at the raceway, located three miles east of Nappanee on SR 6. Ham and beans, with cornbread and drink, will be served by volunteer members of the raceway. Donations will be accepted and all proceeds turned over to Gochenour to help pay medical expenses. Gochenour. who is a member of the raceway’s board of directors, has been an active starter for the races and has been in miniature harness racing from its inception in the 19605. He was one of the originators of the former IOMI (Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois) racing circuit. He was also active in merging IOMI with the International Trotting and Pacing Association in 1976.
