DRUG ABUSE' 8 Ways That Parents Can Tell If A Child Is Using Drugs 1. Does the child seem to be changing? Is the child becoming: more irritable, secretive, unpredictable, hostile, depressed, uncooperative, apathetic, withdrawn, and/or sullen? 2. Is the child becoming less responsible? Is the child: not doing chores; late coming home; tardy at school; forgetful of family occasions (birthdays, etc.)? 3. Is the child changing friends, dress code, or interests? 4. Is the child more difficult to communicate with? Does the child: refuse to talk about details of friendship group activities; refuse to discuss "drug issues"? 5. Is the child beginning to show physical and/or mental deterioration? 6. Is the child's behavior becoming more intolerable to the parent? Does the child: demand his right to drink alcohol? 7. Is the child becoming careless in his drug use? Does the child: forget to replace the liquor stolen from parents? 8. Is the child becoming drugdependent? Does the child: take money from his parents, brothers or sisters? Is the child: caught shoplifting; charged with burglary; charged with prostitution; arrested for drug use or a delinquent act? Does the child attempt suicide?

The group will convey customer concerns to United officials and will be informed about company actions affecting customers. Council members pictured above in front are Valynnda Slack. United Telephone Company of Indiana announces the establishment of a customer council. The council includes 10 citizens representing 43 exchanges in United’s north central and northeastern service area. The group will meet regularly with United’s management to review customer services and discuss related topics. According to Tom Rafferty, public relations director for United, this customer council is the first of two planned for Indiana this year. The first meeting was held in Warsaw on May 4 and the second is planned for July 13. “We consider these people the ears and voice of our customers,” Rafferty said. “We want them to go back to their communities, listen to their neighbors, friends and co-workers and then tell us about their concerns. In turn,” Rafferty added, “we hope to communicate our viewpoint to the council so they can share it with those same people. We believe most consumers are concerned people with ideas and feelings worth contributing.” Rafferty mentioned that there is always a danger of appointing

10 YEARS AGO. JUNE 12.1973 Members of the American Legion Post 223 installed as their new commander, Gus Luyben. Other offices, first vice president, Wally Buffer and second vice president Dave Miller. Phil Strieby, president, preceded over the alumni banquet which was held Saturday. There were 170 persons in attendance. Ronald Sharp was elected the new president. Open house was held in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kline for their 50th anniversary. 20 YEARS AGO, JUNE 13.1963 Lakeland Motors, Syracuses new Chrysler auto agency will hold its grand opening this Friday and Saturday, June 14-15. Jack Wells, president of the Chamber of Commerce announced that entries for the Flotilla will be accepted up to the last minute. Eli Lilly, considered “Mr. Wawasee,” will be guest of honor. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Putt of Syracuse were among guests attending a special honor dinner for principal R. Nelson Snider of Fort Wayne. The Syracuse Business and Professional Woman's Club met Tuesday for installation of officers. Those installed were president, Mrs. Leonard Barnhart; vice president, Mrs. R. C. Tyler; secretary, Mrs. Ray Buhrt; treasurer, Mrs. Dale Plummer. 30 YEARS AGO, JUNE 12.1953 Thirty-five Syracuse boys and girls enrolled in the Syracuse community Hands Boys 4-H club this summer. A total of 120 projects are being carried. James Gard, Syracuse High School student, will leave Saturday, to attend the annual Hoosier Boy’s State sponsored by the American Legion Post 223. Mrs. Millard Hire went to Oberlin, Ohio to bring home her daughter, Sasha Ann, a student at Oberlin, for the summer. Lewis S. Immel graduated from Indiana University June 15 with a M S in education. Jeanne Spurgeon will have four local girls in her tap dance presentation Thursday, June 18. The girls are Donna Moats, Kay and Sharon Nerdman and Sherri Burson. Marsha Disher, Patricia Hapner both students at Indiana University have returned here for the summer.
