Milford Junior High Student of the Year, school secretary honored

Naming Kristina Lange Student of the Year capped two-days of award presentations at Milford Junior High School last week. Virginia Bess, school secretary, was also presented an award from the eighth grade class for her service at the school. She will be leaving the junior high for another position at Lakeland Community School Corporation’s central office. This year there are six varieties of soybeans on test in the plot located on Kern Road directly west of the high school. Interested patrons are invited to visit the plots anytime during the summer. Several area farmers and businessmen were responsible for helping the local chapter with the demonstration plots this spring. Donating seed were Phil Gingerich, Ralph Kennell, Nelson Beer, Jim Miller with the Milford Farm Bureau Co-op, and Hixson Seeds, New Paris. Donating equipment for fieldwork were Curt Richcreek, Richard Workman, Cletus Lee, and Nelson Beer. Anyone desiring additional information should contact the voag department at Wawasee High School.

Awards presented at SJHS

During an awards program last Wednesday Syracuse Junior High teachers presented scholastic awards to those students who exhibited outstanding achievement in the classroom during the school year. Mathematics, science, language arts, and social studies teachers honored the eighth grade boys and girls who maintained the highest scholastic averages in each area. In mathematics teachers Casimier Szynal and Ted Mahnensmith presented the plaques to Heidi Musser and David Broekers. The science awards were presented to Jennifer Tuttle and David Broekers by science teacher Dick Edwards. The social studies awards were also presented to Jennifer and Broekers by social studies teacher Mary Lou Dixon. Mrs. Dixon presented the yearbook award to Christi Weaver and the publications award to Troy Dull. 13th consecutive year the students have published a yearbook and this issue will be the second to have a hard cover. In language arts teacher Russ Sonafrank, 11, presented awards to Jennifer Tuttle and Michael Neterer. Sonafrank also presented the spelling bee certificates to school champion, Heidi Musser, school runner up, Severely Begley; and fifth and sixth grade runner up, Shelley Smith. An award is presented in physical education to the student who has participated with the most enthusiasm and leadership. Teacher Tom Jones presented this award to Marcus Mcßroom. Charles Haffner, school principal and Galen Hershberger, sponsor, presented a plaque to Student Council President Mark Keener, in recognition of his leadership of the student council this year. Kristi was in charge of the attendance slip pick up and parent bulletins. Cindy sold daily lunch tickets and Briggs was in charge of sorting and delivering mail. Connie Bailey presented certificates to the students in the ESP program who qualified for the Future problem Solving State Competition. Certificiates were presented to Barbie Butler, Vince Koser and Alicia Schaekel. In addtion to qualifying certificates the following students were honored for winning the skit competition: Brad Gerstner, Gina Swartzendruber, Jennifer Carty, Mary Haffner and Kim Adams. All awards are purchased from money earned by the students during the school’s annual citrus sale. This year the students sold over 1,500 boxes of fruit and earned over $3,000 for the school’s activity and award program.

President’s Physical Fitness Awards Girls first year — Shauna Bushong, Saby Vale, Sheri Beer, Tami Hollar, Denise Berkeypile, Office lab committee honored The members of the Wawasee High School Secretarial Office Education Laboratory Advisory Committee were guest of the State Bank of Syracuse at a luncheon given recently. The advisory committee is a group of individuals from outside the field of education with specific knowledge and expertise, and organized to advise educators on the world of work. Their job is to provide a link between the community and school for the purpose of maintaining and improving vocational education programs to prepare all students with better futures. The 1982-83 board consists of Steve Beavers, Beavers Realty; Brice Medlock, CTB; Marti Gerstner, Universal Livestock; Stacy (Rogers) List, Brock Manufacturing; Bonnie Hampton, Commodore Corporation; Win Sroufe, Sroufe Manufacturing; and Jeanne Gardiner, State Bank of Syracuse, this year’s chairman. Pat Huber, Wawasee High School’s office lab coordinator, and Dick Wysong, vocational director, were present to share the highlights of the season. They presented vocational education “Thank You” certificates to the committee members. Mrs. Huber and Mrs. Gardiner listed some of the accomplishments of the advisory committee this past year, those being: completion of a business community survey, which pointed out the need for computer skills; practice interviews for the office lab students; student/business person lunches; public relations workshop; office tours for students; a successful fund drive for purchasing a word processor; and, finally, delivery, installation and demonstration of the Lanier word processing system. The office lab advisory committee will meet'again in the fall.

There were 45 teams from throughout Indiana qualified to compete in the annual event. Representing the local chapter were Ken Schafer, Scott Barker, Steve Tethrake and Marty Brown. The team finished in the red ribbon division. They had earlier qualified for the state contest by placing first in both the county and area level competition. In crops judging, contestants must be able to correctly identify over 60 plant and seed samples from common crops and weeds found in the state. They must also be able to recognize certain disease and damage factors which can occur in grain, take a written quiz on crop production principles and grade samples of corn, soybeans and wheat.

Juniors — Jerry Auer, Scott Badskey, Melissa Baumgartner, 3-vehicle accident in Warsaw A Leesburg woman was involved in a three-vehicle rear-end collision Monday afternoon, May 30, In Warsaw. The accident occurred on North Detroit Street, south of Fort Wayne Street. Sandra L. Long, 27, Leesburg, stopped her auto in traffic when it was struck from behind by a truck driven by Bryan L. Druck, 21, Converse. David F. Kelly, 34, r 2 Warsaw, was driving the truck that struck the back of Druck’s Pickup. Damage to each of the vehicles was estimated up to $2,500. Worker injured in fall Dennis Blosser, 33, Syracuse, is recovering in the Elkhart Hospital following surgery Monday. Blosser fell 20-25 feet Friday morning, June 3, from a sila at Vylactos Laboratories, 800 South Huntington St., Syracuse. He was taken by Syracuse Emergency Medical Technicians to Elkhart Hospital where he underwent surgery for fractures of the skull, hip, leg, arm and elbow. Blosser, an employee, had been fighting a small fire in the silo and was coming down a ladder carrying a hose and flashlight when he fell to the concrete floor. He is in room 4037. Syracuse Police receive theft reports Syracuse Police received several theft reports during the past week, and a lost license plate report. Dan Gladieux, 915 N. Main St., Goshen, reported on Monday, June 6, a baseball glove and basketball were stolen from his auto while it was parked at Greenhaus Apartments on May 21. The glove was valued at S4O and the basketball at sls. Wilbur Smith, 219 N. Harrison St., Syracuse, reported tools and a tool box were stolen from his auto. Smith discovered the items missing on May 28 and reported the theft on May 31. Roger Hand, r 5 Syracuse, reported the license plate for his boat trailer was lost. The report was made on June 1.
