Tennis pro conies to community
By GAIL WIDMOYER “I want to promote my tennis program because it’s the most advanced program in Indiana. ” commented Gary Metzger, president of the American Professional Racquet Association who is offering summer tennis lessons to Lakeland community residents. Through his program, Metzger utilizes the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) making it possible for him to group players into similar ability levels for league play, tournaments, group lessons, social competition and club or community programs. “The rating categories actually generalize about skill levels,” explained Metzger who is also the tennis pro at the Goshen Tennis Club. “Chosen categories aren’t meant to be permanent positions,” he continued. “They change as the level of play changes.” Education is Metzger's primary goal for his program networks. “I want to teach the kids and adults how to play tennis, but I also want to show them how they can go on and become a part of the professional circuit.” Metzger himself has played professionally with the likes of John McEnroe and is presently re-entering the pro circuit after a personal leave of absence. “I made it to the quarter-finals in the most recent Grand Prix event.” the 20-year-old pro commented in his own self-confident way. Self-confidence is an important part of any tennis player's game, as well as an important part of Metzger’s life. Metzger’s lifetime accomplishments besides his positions with APRA and the Goshen Tennis Club include: head professional at the Oristo resort on Edisto Island, S.C.; promoter of Maggia Sportsware, Antelope Racquets and Foot-Joy shoes. “I’m 110 per cent behind my sponsors, and I want to tell the kids how they can promote products too,” Metzger said.
