WHS athletes honored Friday at spring banquet
The third and final sports banquet of 1982-83 was termed a success by athletic director Hal Traviolia as about 400 parents, students and athletes attended a banquet and awards program at the High School last Friday night. Wawasee principal Howard J. Hull awarded the team trophies earned by spring teams before adjourning for individual team awards. Comments Positive “This school year has been a very successful one for us,’’ said Hull. “The win-loss records are very much on the positive side, but what is just as positive are all the comments I have received regarding the conduct and sportsmanship of these coaches and young ladies and gentlemen.” Receiving trophies were the golf, boys’ track and girls’ track teams. Saying the golf team “probably represent our best chance at our next team state championship,” senior Jeff Atwood presented the NLC trophy captured by the team. The Warrior golfers finished the season with a 13-3 record, qualified for the regional and finished third in the sectional. Atwood and Bryan Beaty were selected to the all-NLC team as

Boys' track team 13th at regionals
Wawasee’s boys’ track team placed a respectable 13th out of 54 teams in Thursday’s regional at Kokomo, with Warrior Brad LeCount placing second in the pole vault, allowing him to go on to the state competition in Indianapolis on Friday. Other Warriors to place were Jerry Auer, who finished 11th in the 16 meter run, and Todd Reiff, finishing 10th in the discus. Track coach Jerry Minton said Melendez to state Sophomore Sonya Melendez Wednesday qualified to compete in this week end’s state track finals by placing fifth in the 1600 meter at the regional in Fort Wayne. Coach Barb Brouwer, who led the team to a perfect 12-0 regular season record to capture the Northern Lakes Conference championship, termed Melendez’s performance the most pleasant surprise of the season. The fact that more Lady Warriors didn’t qualify for the state finals, and the team’s second place finish behind Elkhart Central in the sectional, were the only major disappointments in an otherwise outstanding year, Brouwer said. Brouwer expressed confidence that next year’s squad would repeat as NLC champs. This year’s title was Wawasee’s fourth in a row and third under Brouwer. Woodlings, Kitson, Vance winners at CTB Woodlings defeated Thornburg 6- Kitson won easily over Orn 7- and Vance pounded Douglas 32-19 in CTB softball action. A third-inning rally sealed the victory for Woodlings while the home run swing of Brian Dawes, Mike Anglin and Alan Zimmerman helped Vance. In the 7-0 shutout, Kitson was aided because Orn was short of players.
was Kim Zurcher, who was selected as second team all-NLC. , The boys’ track team finished the season with a 4-5 record and placed sixth in the NLC. Senior Todd Reiff presented a trophy won at the annual Warrior Relays. For the girls’ track team, 1983 was a dream season. Finishing with a sparkling 12-0 mark in the regular season, senior Grace Stichter had the job of presenting the team’s fourth-straight NLC championship trophy. The Lady Warriors placed second in the sectional. Individual Awards Twenty-one athletes were recognized with individual awards from their respective team coaches. Following is a rundown, sport-by-sport, of the winners: GIRLS' TRACK — Captain, Tammy Welborn; high point, captain, MVP, Grace Stichter; second high point, Maude Packer; jacket, desire and dedication, Sonia Melendez. the team’s finish in the regional “wasn’t bad,” and said he felt the team could look back on a fairly successful season. “When you consider we had alot of injuries, and the weather we had at the beginning of the year, we had a good season,” Minton said. Minton said he was looking forward to the 1984 track season, with a total of 12 lettermen returning to the squad.
