Zion Chapel minister anticipating growth

By DEB FOX “I feel we made some great stride,” remarked Rev. Don Ross, pastor of Zion Chapel United Brethren Church, Syracuse. “I see potential to grow and I’m anticipating that growth as God continues to work with us,” he continued. Zion Chapel has taken in 20 new members over the last IMs years and lost only four. The average church attendance two years ago was approximately 32. This too has increased, with the first quarter average at 52 in attendance per week. Possibly aiding Zion in the steady growth is the start of a number of new programs. They

Recently the church completed a missionary week end where the members learned about missions in Jamaica, Hong Kong and Sierra Leone. Other special events include a Sunday morning service with Joy McDonald with her ministry in song, and Bible School August 15-19. The Quiz Team just completed its second quizzing season. The team involved students in grades seven through 12, and they competed conference-wide with other teams. In the competition various topics and books of the Bible are

chosen and the team members quizzed on particular topics. A camping program is being offered for all who attend Zion Chapel. The first camp is the Golden Years camp June 5-8; Youth camp, June 12-18; Alpha camp, June 19-24; Junior camp, July 3-8; and Intermediate camp, July 10-15. A revival will be held October 9-12 with Rev. Ken Beattie as the evangelist. An ongoing event at the church is the family night the last Saturday evening of each month. The event is held in the House of Friendship, across the road from the church, at 7 p.m’ The Wednesday morning prayer group was started to accommodate those who work the second shift and would like to attend in addition to those who cannot travel at night. This group meets at 9:30 each Wednesday morning. Active In Community With the start of these new programs, the church is becoming more active in the community, including the pastor himself. Rev. Ross lead a Sunday School class on Sunday afternoon at Frost Foundation For Boys before it closed. He is also involved as a camp chaplain for one week this summer at Camp Crosley and a volunteer chaplain at Goshen Hospital. Something that has changed the last V/i years is the church’s pastor is living in the “field” instead of 40 miles away while attending college. Rev. Ross lives five miles from the church and is able to participate more in local activities. Anticipates Growth ‘ Rev. Ross believes growth will come to Zion Chapel in time and through the love of those attending the church. “What Christians and the church should be is so saturated with love that when there is pressure or the need to go into action the love oozes out and touhes everyone around, like a sponge filled with water.” He has a dream, “I’d like to see a boat in worship service started in this area. I’ve talked to one other pastor.” It is a possibility that by next summer a service, similar to the one which is held on Lake Wawasee, will take place at one of the lakes in the North Webster-Leesburg area. “We’ve made some strides and have places to go and things to work on, but we’re on the right track,” remarked Rev. Ross. The Youth The Father’s Followers of Zion are planning a bike-a-thon or something similar around Dewart Lake for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The group is

working on another project with the money raised benefiting an orphanage in Anderson. A Sunday School picnic is planned for August. The youth of the church number approximately 14 and range from 10 years old to 17. Larry McCullough, youth Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, trustee and board member, stated the youth are in the process of building up the youth membership and starting a youth ministry, not for their own church or youth but for the community. “We want to expand out into outlying areas, not necessary to infringe on other churches territory.” Other Ministries A tape ministry was started for those who are absent from the Sunday morning services or other special services. Rev. Ross remarked there are six to 12 tapes copied each week. The outlook for the church is the remodeling of the basement as a youth room. This will be the first major project, giving the youth a place which is “theirs.” It is hoped this project can be completed in a year. Other kinds of expansions are bieng talked about but at this time, they are only in the talking stage, unless there is a rapid growth in church attendance. VBS for all ages at Bethel “Jesus, Lord of Promises” is the theme for this year’s Vacation Bible School at Bethel Church of the Brethren, Milford, announced Roger Eberly, pastor. Classes will be held each evening, June 6 through 10, at the church for children age two through the sixth grade from 7 until 8:45 p.m. and will deal with stories from the New Testament which illustrate Jesus’ promises. An adult class will also be held at the same time under the direction of Naomi and Arlie Waggy. The adult section will use “Celebration of Discipline: Path to Spiritual Growth,” by Richard Foster as a guide. All proceeds collected during the Bible school will benefit CROP and help that organization purchase seeds for needy countries in an attempt to improve the underdeveloped countries’ diets. For more information on the Bible school, contact Rev. Eberly at 658-4931

The series will begin on Sunday, June 5, and run every Sunday, beginning at 6 p.m., through June 26. Joni Eareckson Tada is a bestselling author, recording artist, accomplished illustrator and an actress. At the age of 17, she was the victim of a tragic diving accident which left her paralyzed from the neck down. Her struggles with quadriplegia and depression were chronicled in her book, “Joni,” which sold over four million copies. The film, as well as Tada’s natural acting abilities, were highly praised by audiences and critics alike. Mrs. Tada’s second book, “A Step Further,” dealt with her reevaluation of her faith and her priorities in life. These are the areas brought into focus in the film series, “Blessings out of Brokenness”. In the four films, Tada discusses these topics: Why the Brokenness?; Where are the Blessings?; Mending Things, and Healing and Heaven. Included are glimpses of her personal life and her work with other handicapped individuals. Pastor George Swank stressed that the public is cordially invited to attend the entire series.

Church of God VBS develops dimensions The North Webster Church of God has announced that vacation Bible school will add to the summer’s wholesome activities for children of the community from June 6 through 10 at the church from 9 until 11:30 a.m. daily. This year’s theme is “The Family of God,” with the daily schedule providing fun times of crafts and recreation as well as learning experiences from the Bible. The goal of this summer’s VBS is to help children from age four through the fourth grade develop the spiritual dimension of their lives. The goal will be accomplished through a study of God’s special family. Pastor Charles Towriss invites the public to take advantage of this summertime adventure. “Our church is in this community because we care about you and your children," commented the pastor. For further information on the VBS. call 834-4281. Art show at Calvary The administrative board of the Calvary United Methodist Church has approved having showings of art work done by various local artists. During the year, paintings, drawings, etc. will hang in the narthex of the church, which will be open daily so that the public may view them. Starting June 5, paintings by Syracuse artists Jean Miller. Ginnie Kramer and Marilyn Moore will be on display. This will change on July 3, when Betty Harkless Appenzeller will hang her paintings. The church is located on SR 13 south of Syracuse. Even if marriages are made in heaven, man has to be responsible for the maintenance. — John Graham
