Summer
Swimming and summer go together
Swimming and summer go together and there’s no better place to look for water fun than in the Lakeland Community. There are public beaches on Milford’s Waubee Lake and at Syracuse’s Lakeside Park that have lifeguards on duty during swimming hours. There are some simple common sense rules that keep swimming fun and safe. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself and your family with these rules: Never swim alone. Always use the buddy system. Don’t over eat before swimming and always allow at least one-hour after eating to avoid cramps in the legs and arms. Before entering the water be aware of conditions which exist in the area. It’s a good idea to ask other swimmers about depth and the lake bottom.
Summer dedication ♦ seen as golf key
By GARY LEWIS Veteran coach Rudy Cesco has seen it all as Wawasee’s only golf coach. Coming up with a situation at a high school meet he hasn’t been involved in before would be a rarity. But last week’s third-place finish in the sectional will go down in his mind as a first in his career. Never has he seen an entire team have such a bad luck day. Oh, he’s seen individuals falter before. But an entire team? That’s exactly what happened in Wawasee’s attempt to win the Churubusco golf sectional for the third year in a row. A series of bad holes by each member of the squad barely enabled the Warriors to return to regional action at LaPorte yesterday (Tuesday). “We consider ourselves fortunate to still be alive,” said Cesco. Wawasee’s youth, three juniors and a sophomore at the top four spots, has been reason for high expectations next season. Finishing the regular season at 13-3, winning the NLC title for the second season in a row, also meant added pressure to do well in the tournament this time around. “Because we’re young, we’re going to have days like this,” said Cesco. “This is the first time I had such a good, young team.” Air show at Warsaw June 12 The Warsaw Exchange Club of America and the Warsaw Pilots Association will present an air show at the Warsaw Airport on Sunday, June 12. The program will feature aerobatics, sky-diving, airplane and helicopter rides, radio controlled airplane demonstrations and more. A pancake and sausage breakfast will be offered from 8 a.m. until 12 noon, with concessions available in the afternoon. All pilots and spectators are welcome. There will be free admission and free parking. it COCINERO’S H MEXICAN DINING ® 2 ,1 3 Mexican Food & £ Sih Choice Steaks Sfe I Serving LUNCH &BINNEH I $8 SRI3S smcusE sk?: 457-5059
Never go into the water depending on a rubber tube, raft or floatation device if you are a beginner. These can puncture and leave you in water well over your head. ) Never dive or jump into cold water, this causes numbness of the body and can lead to drowning. Divers should always make sure they have eight feet of water if they are novice, and nine feet for the diving spring board.

Wawasee’s inability to shake off the mental grind of a few bad shots was a major reason for the poor showing, Cesco said. “Golf is so much mental. It’s hard for them to see it right now, but it is probably the most important factor,” Cesco explained. “We must be able to concentrate when it counts. You can’t concentrate all the time, for five hours, and you have to learn to accept bad shots. Each of them had one disastrous hole. Instead of taking five on a par four hole, they’d take a seven. It’s hard to make up a triple bogie.” Potential Cesco has had several successful teams in his career as golf coach for the Warriors, but he says this team is one of the best yet. “It rates right up there. I hope this summer that they will work on their weaknesses.” In Indiana, summer development is crucial for success in golf. Typical Indiana weather in the spring limits any real practice time and the schedule allows even less time for practice. Potential for any team is a difficult thing to gauge, but on a whole, Cesco believes with enough practice the Warriors could be a state contender next spring. “It’s all up to them,” he said, admitting there’s little he can do as a coach in the off-season. “It’s their’s to take. I don’t think there are too many teams here that have the opportunity they do if they capitalize on it.” “We’re looking to do all we can this year, but we just say that facts are facts: we have the potential for a good team next year.” - The road won’t be easy, with every NLC team after the Warriors’ title. “Everyone will be shooting for us,” he added. The entire conference looks to be improved next season with only five out of 40 players graduating. “Two of those will be replaced by good freshmen,” Cesco said. What is going to be the key, however, is dedication in the summer months. “This summer will be crucial. I’ll encourage them to enter tournaments and improvement in their game. Carpet cleaner A great carpet cleaner and deodorizer can be made by combining two cups of cornmeal and one cup of borax. Sprinkle on, let stand one hour before vacuuming. Leftovers? Do warm up exercises before a fast or competitive swim, avoiding cramps. Swimming like other recreation requires using your head. Don’t roughhouse in the water, ducking swimmers and holding them under. Never take dares and if you become cold or tired, rest. There are water games, if supervised, that are safe and a source of exercise and fun. A few

Tippy dance hall re-opens
On Friday, June 3, the Tippecanoe Gardens Dance Hall will re-open after being closed for many years. The recreation center, located on the south side of Tippecanoe Lake, is a spot well remembered by past generations as a place where young people met and danced. Many local and summer residents attended gatherings at that spot and some well-known musical groups started there. Mr. Van Cleave, present owner,

If you see a person drowning or struggling in the water and you are not a strong swimmer, don’t dive or jump in after them. Throw them a life line or a life preserver. You may be of more help and avoid your own drowning. Call for help or get help if it is close by. Never over estimate your own strength.
