Warriors take second in NLC — fail to stop Plymouth for lead
With what appeared to be an easy victory over North Wood on Friday nOon the Wawasee baseball team tightened the Northern Lakes Conference race, moving into second place. However, the Warriors’ move to the top was stopped Monday when they were defeated by conference leader Plymouth. Wawasee, behind the strong hitting and pitching of senior Kevin Smith, moved into sole possession of second place with the 6-1 victory over North Wood. Plymouth defeated the Warriors 6-2. Wawasee is now 8-5 in conference play, Plymouth is 10-3. In the North Wood game Smith pitched a five-hitter as he connected for three hits and two RBIs. Wawasee got off to a three-run first inning, added two runs in the second and then was held until the sixth when the final run was ?. scored. Smith, the winning pit-— cher, and fellow senior Pat Hare had run-scoring singles in the first inning with Eric Beer adding a sacrifice fly. Both Smith and Beer had RBI singles in the second inning. The final run came when Dave Workman was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to second and then sent home by designated hitter Jon Vitaniemi’s single. The Panthers were held scoreless until the sixth when Rick Yoder hit a single and then made the trip around the bases to home. Tough Plymouth The victory by Plymouth on Monday clinched at least a tie for the Pilgrims in the conference. It will be their ninth consecutive NLC title. Smith had an RBI single and Beer a sacrifice fly for Wawasee’s two runs. They came in the seventh inning. Records Set Sixth rated Fort Wayne North defeated the Warriors 12-11 and 9-7 at North in a double header bn Saturday. The game saw two WHS records fall. Smith hit his 34th base hit of the season to top 33, the record set by Jay Kaiser in 1977 and Tony Blackburn stole his 17th base to top 16, the record set by Kaiser in 1979. Brian Kistler had three hits and Smith and Hare had two each in the first game. Tim Fraser and Hare had doubles in the second game and Vietaniemi had a triple. Concord Defeated Wednesday Last Wednesday the Warriors defeated concord 5-1 in a conference game. They got all five runs in the first inning. Kistler

Minton named IHSAA district X-country coach Jerry Minton, Wawasee High School track coach, has been picked as Indiana High School Athletic Association District 11, girls’ cross country coach of the year. The honor was bestowed on him by the board of the IHSAA. Minton has also been selected and will be inducted into the Huntington County High School basketball hall of fame which is sponsored by the Police Athletic League. He played for Lancaster High School (no longer in existence) in the 1957-58 seasons.

The play of the day was “Most Sixes.” For 18 holes of play the first place winner was Caryl Gildersleeve, second place was a tie between June Auer and Doris Sedgwick. For the nine hole, first place tie went to Pat Hoover and Bonnie Newman and second place was shared by Patty Norman, June Lantz and Nan Leatherman.
Tuesday Afternoon Ladies hold banquet, receive awards
The Tuesday Afternoon Ladies held their spring banquet on May 3. The Dewart Lake Marina team members were the hostesses for the afternoon. Tables were decorated with bud vases with silk flowers made by the hostesses. After a short business meeting, officers were elected for the following year. CTB form softball league for employees'
Over 110 men and some 20 women signed up for summer softball at CTB, Inc., Milford for intra-company leagues designed for employees’ “fun.” The men’s league began on May 16 and will run for 14 weeks with seven teams participating in games played on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. All evening games are played at 4:45 p.m. with HOLE IN ONE AT BIG BOULDER Marvin Rapp of Milford shot a hole-in-one at Big Boulder Golf Course, Milford, on Monday of this week. It was the first hole-in-one of the season for the course and Rapp became the first Milford man to get the ball in the hole on one shot at the golf course. Rapp was golfing with his wife, Leatrice, and made his ace on the 116-yard number seven. He will receive a trophy from the golf course for his hole-in-one. ISWA wrestling tournament held May 14 Indiana State Wrestling Association held its tournament on Saturday, May 14, at Harding High School, Fort Wayne. In the Midget class first place went to Mike Yoder in the 75 pound class. In the advanced class 105 pound, Jeff Welborn placed third. Brad Traviolia placed first in the 130 pound class and Steve Yoder placed first in the 138 pound class.

Bob Auer and John Replogle are in charge of the women’s teams. League Origin A survey was taken last fall to see how much employee interest there would be in playing softball. CTB president. Jim Evans, agreed if there was enough interest, a diamond could be built. More than 90 people reacted in favor of the league, so this spring another survey was taken and sign-up sheets were posted.
