Eta Beta Pi Society observe 60th anniversary

Members of Eta Beta Pi Society, a group formed in 1923 whose purpose is to maintain a close love and fellowship with each other, observed its 60th anniversary with lunch in a local restaurant and a special program at the Milford Community Building on Monday, May 16. A table grace poem was presented to 12 members and eight guests attending the event with a review of group accomplishments during the past 60 years given by Mrs. LaMar Garber, president. The accomplishments included listing Bobi Doll attends hair show this week On Monday, May 16, Bobi Doll, owner of Bobi’s Shear Success in Milford, attended a hair show and learned new techniques in hair design at the Holiday Inn Downtown, ; Fort Wayne. The artist on stage was Tammy Kois of Denver, Colo. Mrs. Doll stated she picked up some nice and easy tips for summer hair care.

Syracuse BPW celebrates 46th anniversary May 10

The Syracuse Business and Professional Women’s Club met Tuesday, May 10, in Goshen for their monthly meeting. Twentyone members were present. President Carol Elder conducted the business meeting after the pledge to the. flag, the standing committee gave their reports. Lois Koher reported that color books and crayons were sent to Riley Hospital. Plans were finalized for the chicken barbecue, bake sale and food stand to be held at the youth center Monday, May 30, during Sagebrush Days. It was the club’s 46th anniversary and Mary Rose Henning gave the club’s history. The Syracuse club was organized May 25/ 1937. The charter members were Mayme Long, Phyllis Mock, Evelyn Greiger, Helen Snobarger, Margaret Nichols, Bernice toward, Betty Clark, Nell Laughlin and Ann Clayton. During the many years various

underwritten charities. Mrs. Preston Klinger read the original set of bylaws and Mrs. Lawrence Polk read a list of deceased members. She then saluted present members with a toast. Three charter members: Mrs. Don Anglin, Nappanee; Mrs. Percy Bartlett, Syracuse, and Mrs. Preston Klinger, Elkhart, were given corsages in honor of their service. Mrs. Peter Beer won a large potted plant as the table prize and all members were presented with a brochure of organizational facts. After the luncheon, all members and guests met at the community building where the Milford Fifth Grade Special Choir, under the direction of Donna Pollen, presented a program. Members and guests present for the anniversary celebration were: Mr. and Mrs. Don Anglin, and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Price, all of Nappanee; Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Garber, Mrs. Preston Klinger and Mrs. Lawrence Polk, all of Elkhart; Mr. and Mrs.

Bridge games, carnival booths, talent shows and “Civie” night. “Showboat”, recipe books, bake sales, flea markets, ice cream socials and chicken barbecues were the sources of revenue. The donations were to the old county home, Syracuse Drum Corps, Syracuse City Park, Cub Scouts, Campfire Girls, Riley Hospital, Water Safety Program, Safety Patrol, Scout Cabin, Cardinal Center, “Sound of Hope,” Mental Health, Red Cross Bloodmobile, Nursing Association, Syracuse Library, trees to cemetery, Syracuse Development Corporation, Goshen Hospital, Syracuse Fire Department and EMS. The past two years a scholarship has been given to a Wawasee High School Senior who plans to further her education. All members agreed that what started out as a social luncheon in 1937 has grown into an informative, fun, hard working club.

Meals for older Americans

Meals for Older Americans are served each day at the following locations; The Scout cabin at Crosson Park, Syracuse; the Pierceton Community Building; Mentone Community Room at the fire station; and the Retired Tigers center, 320 W. Main, Warsaw. Meals for Older Americans is for persons 60 years or older and is a chance to meet new friends, enjoy hot, nutritional meals. The sites are opened several hours each day including noon for programs. Meals for Older Americans is not associated with Welfare but is for the promotion for better health for the older population. Donations are accepted for the meals. The site directors request all persons planning on attending the meals to make reservations by 1 p.m. the day prior to attending. Round Table Ladies hold spring party Maxine Graham opened her home to the Ladies of the Round Table for their spring party May 9. Janet Davis and Char Ough were welcomed as new members. Decorations of rainbows and spring were the work of Barbara Griffith and Arlene Mohler. The meeting was devoted to the visit of Joyce Vaughn from Elkhart who is the deputy representing district 20 of the Indiana Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. The purpose of the visit was instructional. The members conducted several of the traditional ceremonies and procedures for the benefit and perusal of the deputy. After the meeting refreshments of petite blueberry muffins and other appropriate delicacies were served by Suzanne Lisor.

Peggy Beer and Gustavo Romero married at Milford April 2

Only members of the immediate family and grandparents were in attendance in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Beer, r 1 Milford, on April 2 for the 1 o’clock ceremony which united in marriage the Beers’ daughter Peggy Lynn with Gustavo Romero. The bridgegroom is a native of Caracas, Venezuela. Rev. Carl Zeltwanger of Bremen officiated at the ceremony which was held in a setting featuring candelabra with pink bows. Given in marriage by her father, the new Mrs. Romero wore her mother’s wedding dress of white linen. It is mid-calf length with long, tapered sleeves and stand-up collar. She carried a single pink rose on her mother’s Bible. Mrs. Beer wore a street-length off white dress with navy trim and navy accessories. Her corsage was of pink and rosecolored roses with baby’s breath. Reception Held A reception dinner was held at 4 o’clock in the Apostolic Christian Church’s fellowship hall with the bride’s sisters, Teresa, Janet, Christy and Heather, serving at the dessert and drink table. Another sister, Heidi, attended the guest book. Beer cousins catered the dinner, serving about 100 guests from Bloomington, Indianapolis, Illinois and Minnesota. Following a trip to Chicago the couple left for Puerto Ayaucho, Venezuela to live. The new Mrs. Romero attended Milford schools, Wawasee High

School, Indiana University, Indiana Graduate School and is a graduate of the IU Medical Technology School. She will be working as a medical technologist in a new clinic in Venezuela. Her husband is a biologist with a PhD in his field. He works for the Venezuelan government. He too is a graduate of Indiana University. Week packed with activities at Nutrition Site Many activities are planned for next week at the Nutrition Site in the Scout Cabin, Syracuse, according to Marilyn Taylor, director. On Monday, May 23, Mary Evans, president of the Syracuse Senior Citizens will present a program on social security. This is part of the legal services offered by the Nutrition Site. On Tuesday, May 24, Laurie Hardie, from Goshen Hospital will present a progam on the newly established HELP (Hospital Emergency Lifeline Program) at Goshen. This service enables live-alones to receive help at the push of a button in the event of an emergency. Then on Thursday, May 26, Charlie Taylor will present a program on the recent Wawasee High School band trip to Washington, D.C. Taylor accompanied the youth as a chaperone. Interested persons are encouraged to call 457-2631 for reservations one day in advance for any of the programs which begin on their respective day at 11:15 a.m.
