Baseball team in running for conference title

By GARY LEWIS What seemed to be an impossibility has suddenly become a very real possibility for Wawasee’s baseball Warriors. Coach Myron Dickerson’s crew, after two conference victories in four days, is now in the running for the NLC title after defeating league-leading Bremen 3-2 Monday and Rochester Friday with an identical score. Bremen fell to 13-4 on the season with the loss as Wawasee takes aim at one of the best season records ever, upping its record to 13-8. Kevin Smith pitched a four-hitter in Monday’s contest at Bremen, allowing only one earned run. Errors almost spoiled Wawasee’s chances for a shot at the title in the first inning, as Bremen scored both of its runs on two hits and and several Wawasee fielding miscues in the bottom half of the first. But a two-run triple by senior catcher Eric Beer, who returned from an injury to his finger, followed by a double by Dave Workman gave Wawasee the decisive three runs in the third. Brian Kistler and Kevin Smith both walked to begin the rally, which occurred with two outs. After Bremen’s initial outburst, Smith pitched a two-hitter the remaining six innings. Allowing only one walk, the senior struck out six. “All we have to do is play strong defense,’’ a happy Dickerson said. “With Henson and Smith on the mound, we can play with anybody.”

Elam on his way up at Texas Tech Joe Elam, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Elam of Syracuse, will assume the dual responsibility of coaching both men and women’s diving team next season. “Elam is a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic individual,” said women’s swimming coach Anne James. “He already has established an excellent rapport with the women divers and we feel he will be great for our program.” In his second year at Texas Tech, Elam just finished a winning season taking 13 first places l out of a possible 18 in dual meets I in the Southwest Conference. Joe guided two Red Raider freshmen to the NCAA Zone Championships held at the University of lowa in March. The top Tech diver, Lane Stricklin (Houston), missed the NCAA finals held in Indianapolis i by only 11 points. Stricklin placed 1 ninth in one meter and 10th in three meter diving. Commenting on the outcome, Elam jabbed a friendly barb at the Hoosier State when he said, “four divers from the Southwest Conference (including Stricklin) finished in the top 12 on both one and three meter boards. No divers from Indiana were in the top 12.” Elam graduated from Wawasee High School in 1976 and received a master’s degree from Indiana State University, Terre Haute. Correction It has been brought to our attention that the identification on the professional wrestling match picture on last week’s sport’s page was incorrect. The identification should have read Golden Boy Christy and Blacke Guzman instead of Golden Boy Christy and Bobby Gold Eagle.

Dickerson says five of Wawasee’s eight losses this season can be directly blamed on errors in the field. Part of the problem may be solved at Bremen Monday. Freshman Dave Kistler, brother of Brian, started at shortstop for Dickerson and was perfect in four chances, “He did a good job, and he made good on some difficult ones,” Dickerson said. Wawasee’s NLC record now stands at 6-4. Bremen is still among the leaders at 6-3. Plymouth, the defending and all-time NLC leader, is on top with a 7-3 record. Also in the running are the Panthers of North Wood, at 6-3. “We’re right in the hunt now, we re in control of our own destiny,” Dickerson said. The schedule looks to be structured specifically for a Wawasee sweep of the NLC. The Warriors will take on two of the conference rivals in the remaining four games. The final stretch begins today (Wednesday) at Concord, followed Friday with North Wood at home. Plymouth comes to town Monday, May 16, and the NLC slate closes at Warsaw the following Wednesday. Smoke Signals: That NLC series of contests won’t be easy for the Warriors, but compared to the way things looked earlier in the season when the Warriors lost to Bremen, Wawasee should feel lucky to be able to control their own finish in the conference ... Eric Beer returned last week end to his familiar catcher’s spot after injuring his finger . . . Wawasee defeated Goshen last Wednesday, which was the first time in the school’s history that a Wawasee baseball team has ever beaten Goshen twice in one season ...
