Wawasee back on top with win in relays
“I told those guys that I was tired of losing, and it’s time we start winning,” explained Wawasee track coach Jerry Minton. “Those guys did a great job. We really hung in there,” Minton said about his team’s efforts in Monday's Warrior Relays. Whatever Minton said must have done the job as Wawasee broke out of a season-long tailspin by winning their own relays with a late charge. Locked into fourth place most of the meet, the Warriors' depth gave the team enough points to pull out ahead of the pack. Wawasee scored 84, followed by Manchester (68 l 2), Whitko (75*2), North Wood (54), Plymouth (46), Tippecanoe Valley (42) and Eastside (33), Brad LeCount was the only Wawasee winner. He placed first in the pole vault with a 12-6 effort. The field events proved to be Wawasee’s biggest point producer. Ross Dahlstron placed second in the high jump, coming within three-fourths of an inch of tying the school record with his 6-4 jump. Joel Bales had a personal best at shot put, heaving it

In the relays, Wawasee could do no better than third-place, but those third-place finishes kept the Warriors in line for the championship. runners participated in the damp and cool 26.2 mile race. Also from Syracuse were Ralph Bushong, finishing in 3:13 and Jim Garner timed in 3:18. Times were not available for participants Hal Pearson and John Longenbaugh. Betty (Hite) Nelson, a former North Webster resident and Syracuse school teacher now living in Columbia City, won the women’s division in three hours and two minutes. One week earlier, Nelson won the Heart Stoppers Marathon in Chicago for the second year in a row. Tom Loucks of Ossian was the overall winner in 2:29.55.
Ballinger and Auer finished third. Auer’s effort in this particular event helped to assure Wawasee’s bid for the winner’s circle. On the last mile leg, he passed all but two after starting way off the pace for a blazing, third-place finish. His gutsy dash meant the difference between zero and six points — points that became crucial for Wawasee late in the meet.

Lady Warriors 10-0, win half of NLC
In drizzling rain and cold temperatures, Wawasee’s Lady Warriors track team reached a milestone with the program’s third consecutive NLC roundrobin championsip. Wawasee defeated NLC foes Concord and North Wood in a triangular meet at the rain-swept Warrior track. Wawasee scored 64, Concord 40, and the Lady Panthers 29 in the meet. It was to be a showdown between Concord’s 9-0 tracksters against Wawasee’s 9-0 mark, but the Lady Warriors’ stole the show. Coach Barb Brouwer simply stood back and watched as her talented team ran away with the majority of the events. Senior Grace Stichter won the 1600-meter race with a schoolrecord time of 5:21.5. She shaved off nearly six seconds off the mark, established last year by Tonda Yeager. “When you have good kids, you make a good team,” commented a happy Brouwer, who was hoping the win would improve the team’s chances in next Tuesday’s NLC meet at Warsaw. Wawasee has won 50 per cent of the crown with last night’s (Tuesday) win, and needs only to finish second to capture the crown. Freshman Jeanine Gunn won third-place in the high-jump with her persdnal best of 5-1. Maude Packer won the discus, Marcia Sorensen the shot put, Jill Patty Red Man Indiana tourney Friday More than 200 anglers are expected to compete in this Friday’s Red Man Tournament Trail bass fishing contest at Bloomington’s Monroe Lake. The Indiana division of the contest features a $2,500 first-place prize. Designed for the “working man” angler, the circuit is easy to fish because of the one-day tournament format. The top 24 anglers at the close of the circuit season will compete in the Red Man All American Bass Championship October 18-22 at a site yet to be disclosed. This event is staged by professional tournament crews from Operation Bass, an organization which has conducted competitive fishing contests since 1980. the long jump and Sandy Payne the low hurdles to lead Wawasee in the crucial meet. The schedule lightens up a bit from this point on, enabling Brouwer to concentrate on stragedy. “We have more practice time coming up so we can work on more technique,” the third-year coach explained. Looking ahead to the sectional, Brouwer hopes her team can improve their recent finishes by winning the elusive Elkhart Sectional. Tracksters on schedule heading into show down Coach Barb Brouwer’s Lady Warriors are on course to tie last season’s spotless 12-0 mark and depending on Tuesday’s showdown with NLC foe Concord (see related article), her talented tracksters could be in line for another NLC championship. Last week, Wawasee insured the showdown with two wins and a third-place finish in the East Noble Relays. Wawasee dumped Whitko 79-26, taking 10 of the 13
