Fluoridated water cuts tooth decay 50 per cent

Before the Milford Town Board approved the addition of fluoride to,the city water supply, there was some concern over the health hazards caused by adding the chemical to community water. According toihformation submitted by Charles W. Gish, director of the Dental Division of the Indiana State Board of Health, “Fluoridation is an accepted water treatment procedure throughout the United States and a modern waterworks today includes fluoridation for the benefit of its users as a part of its water treatment procedures.” Gish refers to the July and August 1978 issues of “Consumer Reports” which addressed people’s concerns about the use of fluoride in water supplies. “Fluorides are compounds containing the element fluorine,” explains the magazine. In its various forms, fluoride is found in practically all soils, plants, animals and human blood, bones and teeth. Fluoridation is an adjustment of the natural fluoride level to approximately 1 ppm (parts per million), a level of intake that strengthens tooth enamel and reduces a dental decay by more than 50 per cent. Various groups have distributed information on the adverse effects of fluoridated water including its role in causing cancer and genetic mutations. However, “the only sign of physiological or pathological change in life-long users of op-

timally fluoridated water supplies ... is that they suffer less from tooth decay.” stated the World Health Organization in a report conducted on the effects of fluoridated -water. Intensive research and study for more than 40 years has shown that fluoridation is “a safe, effective and practical public health measure,” commented Gish. Fluoridation is not only recommended by the state board of health, but also by the Indiana Dental Association, Indiana Medical Association, Indiana University Medical Center, local medical and dental societies, local health departments and responsible national health organizations. The Indiana Board of Health as well as other responsible health groups in the nation “have evaluated the anti-fluoridationist claims (against fluoridated water) and found them not to be valid.” explained Gish. For more detailed information on the claims against fluoridated water and the results of carefully conducted studies, see the July and August 1978 issues of “Consumer Reports” magazine.
