Some Wise Words For Sports Enthusiasts

If you’re a sports enthusiast—whether it be basketball, baseball, jogging, tennis or roller skating—it’s important to be physically prepared for activity. Your body is especially vulnerable after a period of inactivity, whatever the reason. Therefore, it’s important to begin slowly with a routine of warm-up exercise. ♦ * ♦ Don’t forget your skin when it comes to sports. It will need extra protection when exposed to sunlight so use a sunscreen. For the inevitable scrapes and cuts, keep an ample supply of bandages and first-aid products on hand. Many families prefer the new Curad Flexible bandage, a good highaction bandage for active people. * * * Sports enthusiasts especially like the way the new flexible fabric bandages move with you and adhere over bendable areas. They’re available in a variety of sizes including pads large enough to cover elbows and knees. Since many

Warriors drop four-in-a-row, two in NLC

4 By GARY LEWIS After winning their first eight games, Wawasee’s diamondmen knows how it feels to be at the other end of the spectrum. Heading into Tuesday afternoon’s encounter at North Wood, the Warriors dropped four straight, losing to Concord !T8 Monday, after a winless three-game week end. Untimely hitting and fielding errors were the big reason for the Wawasee defeats. A bit of a surprise when one considers the much-worked two-man pitching corps of Brian Henson and Kevin Smith. “When you don’t hit the ball, don’t get baserunners, it’s hard to do things,” explained Dickerson, who was disappointed with his team’s fielding but not with the pitching. “Brian Henson did a superb job on the mound (Friday). He struck out 13 batters, only walked three, and that leaves you with eight outs left.” Those eight outs, though, proved to be the reason for the team's downfall. “You ought to be able to handle that and win a baseball game,” Dickerson surmised. Before they had a chance to get those eight outs, NLC foe Bremen scored three unearned runs. Combined with a twohitter by the Lions’ ace, Wawasee came up short, 3-0. Saturday’s games were much of the same — missed plays in the field and lack of crucial hits — as a very fine Manchester team won both games of a twin-bill 9-7 and 5-4. Manchester pounded Smith with 10 hits in the first game “They hit Kevin fairly well. We still could have won the bailgame with some good defense,’’ Dickerson said. “Not everyone is going to be on everyday of the week,” he added, explaining Smith’s struggle. Manchester lost only two games this season, to Kokomo Haworth and Fort Wayne Elmhurst, two very fine baseball programs.

cuts and bruises occur over joints, you might try using the pads as protection on vulnerable areas to help prevent injury. Whatever favorite pastime lures you out of doors, take the time to learn the risks involved. Take adequate protection before starting and carry a supply of bandages in your backpack or pocket. The second game was even more frustrating as Wawasee pitchers Henson and Phil Price teamed-up to allow only one earned run on eight hits. “Defense was the downfall.” Dickerson explained. That game lasted 10 innings until Manchester finally scored the winning run in the home half of the 10th. Dave Workman’s two singles and Smith’s double in the opener and two singles in the night cap highlighted Wawasee’s offensive efforts. Smoke Signals: Wawasee’ second NLC loss of the season. Concord Monday, was partly due to the Minutemen s pounding hits. Price was shelled with seven hits in his first 11 batters, allowing six earned runs, as the inexperienced pitching staff struggled... Tony Blackburn pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits . . . The big news in that contest was the Warriors’ furious comeback in the sixth. Trailing 8-4, Jon Vitaniemi’s two-run homer and base hits by Blackburn, Dave Workman and Smith tied things up going into the seventh . When things go bad, things go bad, or so it seems. Ace Brian Henson relief appearance was a welcome relief for Dickerson, but the right-hander gave up the eventual game-winning, pinchhit homer, by Concord’s Ray Sefranski. Henson promptly retired the next three-in-a-row as the frustrated Warriors dropped their fourth... Senior Eric Beer will probably be out at least another week. The starting catcher cut his finger while at school a few weeks ago . . . Beer’s back-up, Tim Fraser, has done a good job in relief, Dickerson said. “He’s improving. He looks very good at some things” ... Beer’s absence also means shortened firepower on offense, as the veteran slugger hits at a .388 clip . . . Swimming star Bob Galloway has moved into the line-up recently, moving into a pinch-hitting role. He was l-for-3 Saturday.
