Henson sharp in 5-3 win over West Noble

By GARY LEWIS Wawasee was going to open the 1983 season on the road yesterday (Tuesday), but wet fields at West Noble forced the Chargers to visit the Wawasee diamond making the Warriors season-opener their home-opener as well. Wawasee greeted the new campaign with a 5-3 nine-inning win against the Chargers. Coach Myron Dickerson went with his ace, Brian Henson, the distance despite plans for a shared game with senior Kevin Smith. Smith did pitch in the top of the fifth but walked both batters he faced, setting up the Chargers’ two runs. That move may have ruined plans for this Friday afternoon’s previously scheduled home-opener against Elkhart Central. Smith showed signs of his just-completed basketball season with little control, forcing Dickerson to re-enter Henson into the line-up. When Henson returned, he continued where he left off by promptly shutting down the Chargers the rest of the way to complete his four-hit, 10 strikeout shutout. “I thought Brian Henson did a superb job for his first outing,” said Dickerson. “I didn’t want to go with Brian all of the way. I wanted to pitch him four and Kevin three, but I’m not concerned with Kevin Smith. He’ll get ’em down. He’s much better than that but he just wasn’t able to get it over that day.” Smith just picked up a baseball a few weeks ago, while Henson has been throwing since January. Smith may have looked a little out of sync on the mound, but on offense he was the Warriors’ only bright spot. Wawasee managed six hits and Smith had three of them, the most important one delivered in the top of the seventh inning. (Wawasee was the visitors in'the soorebook) Smith smacked the only extra-base hit in the game, a double, making it 3-3 at the end of seven. The Warriors’ won the game on some poor fielding plays by West Noble. In the top of the ninth, Dave Workman walked, followed by Smith’s third hit of the afternoon, giving Wawasee runners on first and second. Left fielder Kris Cox grounded out to first for the second out of the inning, advancing Workman and Smith to second and third. Third baseman Phil Price was at the plate when he was called for his third strike. But the West Noble catcher dropped the ball, scoring Smith. A throw to first was also bobbled, giving Wawasee another insurance run. Henson struck out the side, assuring the Warriors’ first win of the season. West Noble had three errors in the contest and Wawasee four. “I was happy with some of the things we did, but what concerned me was our 12 strikeouts. We’ve got to start hitting the ball,” he said. Wawasee will really need some pitching help because Henson and Smith cannot go full tilt every contest . . . Look for Phil Price, a fine looking junior at third base to pitch, along with veteran Tony Blackburn and Kris Cox to be throwing too . . . Dickerson said he was going to run this season and Brian Kistler’s performance may have been an indication of Dickerson’s confidence in stealing. In his first two trips to the plate, Kistler stole four bases, scoring twice on his steals to third. That gave Wawasee an early 2-0 lead... one of those steal to third came with two out, further evidence of Dickerson’s daring style of play.

BASEBALL IN INDIANA — Fa veteran coach Myron Dickerson, things sometimes make you get silly. Dickerson responds to the action on the field by clowning around in the dugout (photos above) with a little slapstick comedy. April in Indiana means cool,, sometimes freezing, weather! but junia Kris Cox knows how to beat the freeze. He hovers his hands over the electric heater inside the Wawasee dugout befae returning to the action. (Photos by Gary Lewis)

Rebuilding but winning season in store for track

By GARY LEWIS Jerry Minton’s formula for success at Wawasee High School will be in complete working order when the Warriors begin the 1983 track season with the first NLC meet April 14. Actually, the season doesn’t really begin fa* Wawasee until late April because that’s when the bread-and-butter meets, the invitationals, begin. Minton’s crew should be at full strength just in time for when it counts, and that is part of Minton’s formula. “We just don’t put that much importance in the regularseason,” says Minton. “We use some of the early meets in the season as practices, ” he added. “I don’t think kids, especially young kids, can perform at peak level throughout the season,” the 15-year veteran mentor said. Minton’s philosophy in track and field, as it is for cross-country, is to treat the early meets lightly and build-up to the bigger meets. “We try to be peaking in time for the NLCmeet,” he explained. Another part of his stragedy during the season is to keep things light. “Track is something the kids have to enjoy. We have fun and really enjoy ourselves,” he said. “I don’t put them under a lot of pressure, but we win,” Minton said. He is the only track coach Grapplers place first Four Wawasee Wrestling Club grapplers placed first at tournaments this past week end. Gary Gerencser wrestled at the Delphi Wrestling tournament on April 2, and placed first in the senior division, 125.5-pound class. In the Bi-County tournament at Bloomington, Mike Yoder placed first in the 75-pound class, midget division. Jeff Welborn, in the 99pound class and Steve Yoder, in the 138.5-pound class, both placed first in the advanced division. ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Who won the Tournament Players* Championship? 2. Wawasee has ever had and his success speaks for itself. Wawasee has had only one losing season in track and has become a well-respected program throughout the area. “You have to sell the program to the kids. They must know that we are our own team and not just something to do to fill time,” he said. “We have several kids now who specialize in just track and cross-country, so they take the season seriously,” Minton explained. Minton’s have-fun-but-work-hard philosophy is something he believes works well for not only track, but in anything. “I think every sport should be that way.” Last season, Wawasee finished with a 6-4 mark and captured the East Noble Invitational while sending 13 sectional qualifiers, eight regional qualifiers and two state finalists on to post-season action. “Last year was a really good season for us, we won the East Noble relays, walked away with the Warrior Relays and had two kids participate in the state meet.” Graduating from last year’s team are those two state finalists, Kevin Marks and Link Perkins, and a host of other veterans. “We had a lot of veterans last season,” said Minton, commenting on the eight returning lettermen for Wawasee. The Warriors will feature only five seniors and will have the most freshmen ever on a Minton team. As for this season, Minton is optimistic. “We’ll have a pretty good year. Well be awfully young, but from the way things look on the track we ll be as good as we’ve ever been,” he said. A big factor in the team’s potential this season will be the development of 20 freshmen who went out for the team. Although those freshmen may not figure in the scoring right away, they could provide the tracksters with a few surprises. The biggest weakness for the Warriors will be in the field events where Marks starred a year ago. “We won’t be effective until the middle of the season,” Minton forecasted. “We won’t be a real threat until the last of April andon,” he said.

The Warriors will be strong in the distance events where Jerry Auer and Mike Ballinger figure to score well in the 1600-meter run. Heiko Echer line, a rising star in cross-country, will be a leader in the 800. In the 400 relay, Wawasee returns all but one runner. Jeff Thorn, Brian Walls, Ross Dahlstrom and Todd Reiff will make up the new relay team. The only runner last season not returning is Mike Brian. All four sprinters are seniors and will be among the team leaders. A big surprise for Minton has been junior Scott Johnson who has turned a 20’ 8” effort in the long jump at recent meets and Reiff, along with senior Joel Bales, will be consistent scorers with the weights. “They will get better as the season goes,” said Minton. Ending the season ranked 28th in press polls last year, Wawasee finished fourth overall in the NLC and third in the sectional, 11th in the regional. A big team goal for the Warriors is to do well in the relays and invitational meets in May. The East Noble Relays, scheduled two days before the sectional, is an important one fa his team. “We always feel we are really primed for that one,” said Minton. The Warrior Relays, scheduled fa May 2, is another meet Wawasee takes pride in winning. Plymouth, Manchester, Whitko, Eastside, Tippecanoe Valley and North Wood will participate in the relays this season. “That one will really be a good meet,” said Minton. Wawasee participates in the 24team Goshen Relays slated for April 23, but Minton doesn't take it seriously. “We never key for that, it’s too early in the season.” Concord and Goshen figure to be the powers in that one, and is usually the highlight for the Redskins’ season. Individually, Minton says most of his team members shoot fa qualifying in the sectional and making it to the regional meet. With all of the youth, in some aspects, it will be an experimental year for Minton's team. “It’s going to be a rebuilding year, but I think it will beagoodone.”
