Wawasee Kiwanis Club learns about Tri-County
Arnie Karr was the speaker for the March 26 meeting of the Wawasee Kiwanis Chib. He represented the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and explained the TriCounty Fish and Wildlife Area, using a film of the area to illustrate his presentation. Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area was created in 1951 and at present has 3,500 acres. Deer from Wisconsin were used for restocking the wildlife area and there is now a herd of 200. To help feed them, 140 acres of corn and sorgum were planted. Deer hunting began in this area in the mid 1950 s and rabbit hunting in the area is generally good. A record 800 rabbits were taken by 1972-73. In 1982 190 squirrels were taken, but quail and pheasant are scarce in the preserve. Multiflora rose was planted for coverage along fence lines, but now grows out of control to the degree that wildlife cannot penetrate it. Burning is the only way to control it and in the last few years, the harsh winter weather has kept the pheasant and quail population even lower. However the beaver population is good. These animals create marsh floodings that are used by wood ducks, Canada geese, great blue heron, the king fisher and many other birds. Fishing in the wildlife area is excellent with nine natural lakes on the premises. No outboard motors are allowed on the lakes — only electric powered motors are permitted. Spear Lake, one of the lakes on Tri-County. covers 45 acres, from which 11,000 blue gill; 7,000 crappies; and 100 bass were taken. There is something on TriCounty for everyone to enjoy, according to Karr. A 10-acre natural reserve with trails is used
